How marketing towards breastfeeding is portrayed has a huge impact on helping breastfeeding mothers to feel properly educated and supported about the decision to breastfeed. The purpose of this literature review is to demonstrate how marketing tactics can affect the view of breastfeeding, whether that be positive or negative. The results found …

Differences In Ed And Inpatient Utilization By Location Of Primary Care: Co-Location At A Head Start Center Vs. Academic Primary Care Clinic Setting, Rupal Gupta, Jeffrey D. Colvin May 2021

Differences In Ed And Inpatient Utilization By Location Of Primary Care: Co-Location At A Head Start Center Vs. Academic Primary Care Clinic Setting, Rupal Gupta, Jeffrey D. Colvin

Posters

Background: Children (ED) and inpatient utilization. Co-location of a primary care clinic within a Head Start center (HSC) includes nursing surveillance of classrooms and same-day primary care access, which allows students at the HSC to be seen immediately for acute care during the day. Consequently, co-location of primary care within a HSC may reduce barriers to acute care for those students, thereby lowering their ED and inpatient utilization.

Objective: To compare ED and inpatient utilization of students from a HSC with co-located primary care to patients treated at an academic primary care clinic (APCC).

Design/Methods: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, …

Posters

Background: Unplanned extubations (UPEs) are a cause of significant morbidity and mortality in neonates. Multiple successful interventions had been previously implemented in our NICU including standardized endotracheal tube (ETT) securement procedures, bedside checklists, and multi-disciplinary debriefing. In our unit greater than 65% of UPEs occur in neonates under 1.5kg who are particularly sensitive to small adjustments in tube position. We designed a novel approach to reducing UPEs in this patient population.

Objective:

Design/Methods: We hypothesized that increased awareness of historical ETT position would both prevent unnecessary ETT position adjustments and encourage prophylactic adjustments to adjust for significant weight gain or …

Exploring Relationships Among Race, Mothers' Perceptions Of Discrimination During Perinatal Healthcare Visits, And The Prevalence Of Adverse Maternal And Neonatal Health Outcomes, Fiona So

Nursing | Senior Theses

The institutionalized marginalization of the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) population is not an uncommon theme throughout American history. Although a majority of American society actively refers to racial discrimination in the past tense, recent events such as the Black Lives Matter movement demonstrates that countless biases based solely on skin complexion are still ingrained into the minds of many. Due to the pervasiveness of implicit biases, American healthcare professionals are also subject to believing and acting upon these biases, either consciously or subconsciously, which could directly affect the quality of care that their BIPOC patients receive.

In nursing, the job is to care for the patients and get them to be the healthiest version of themselves. This thesis will review articles related to the interrelationship of socioeconomic status, food insecurities and the effect on people’s health. Food insecure people have trouble obtaining food and their nutrition suffers because they do not have the resources or money to maintain a healthy diet. Socioeconomic status plays a big role in the availability and obtainability of the necessary nutrients a person needs. Because of this, chronic diseases can arise and cause further health problems for the patients. The studies …

The patient-to-nurse ratio is a topic that affects all nurses. A review of the research literature was performed to study this vital issue. Data was obtained from surveys conducted in numerous countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Taiwan, and Chile. The evidence showed that an increased patient-to-nurse ratio motivated nurses’ intention to leave their job. A higher patient-to-nurse ratio was found to have been associated with higher levels of personal burnout, client-related burnout, and job dissatisfaction in nurses. Currently in California, in medical-surgical units, the registered nurse staffing mandate is at one nurse to five patients. When …

Improving Cognitive Function In Persons With Dementia Through Music Therapy, Jillian Natividad May 2021

Improving Cognitive Function In Persons With Dementia Through Music Therapy, Jillian Natividad

Nursing | Senior Theses

People diagnosed with dementia experience cognitive alterations that cause overwhelming challenges and lead to distinctive life changes. Declining cognitive function noticeably experienced in dementia not only inflicts difficulty with achieving independent living but increases feelings of agitation and disturbs quality of life. Advanced medical care is widely available for managing mental conditions but may not always be effective in treating cognitive changes like memory loss and confusion. Because the stages of dementia vary from person to person, medical interventions are often patient centered to effectively focus on an individual’s specific needs. With non-pharmacological methods, flexibility in adjusting to an individual’s …

Regression Analysis Of Pacing When Running A Marathon, Hawkin Starke May 2021

Regression Analysis Of Pacing When Running A Marathon, Hawkin Starke

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Regression analysis can be an effective way of examining performance in the marathon event. By splitting up the race into segments or in runner terminology “splits” the significance of each segment as it relates to the total finish time can be explored. Because the idea of splits is already ingrained into the minds of runners, it makes intuitive sense to use these as the metrics to define a race. Additionally, marathons generally make participant age and gender date publicly available which can then be used to find trends within specific demographics. This tailors trends to smaller groups of people, making …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Moraxella bovis can cause infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK).

The role of M bovoculi in IBK is not fully understood.

M bovis and M bovoculi appear to undergo genetic recombination with each other or other members of the Moraxellaceae.

Recombination complicates their classification and potential role(s) in IBK pathogenesis.

MALDI-TOF MS is used to identify M bovis, 2 major strains or genotypes of M bovoculi, M ovis, and other members of the Moraxellaceae.

Classification and determination of pathogenesis potential within Moraxella species may be better understood through whole genome sequencing.

Getting The Price Tag Of The Covid Crisis: Measuring Health Expenditures In A Pandemic Based On The System Of Health Accounts Framework, John Lourenze Poquiz, Maegan S. Saroca

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

The COVID-19 pandemic forced many (if not all) countries to resort to extreme interventions to manage the spread of the Corona virus. However, most of these spending are not explicitly considered as health expenditures in typical National Health Accounts (NHA) estimates. As such, estimating health spending by employing the conventional expenditure items recorded in NHAs may not reflect the overall financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the healthcare system. We argue that an expanded measure of health spending might be needed to capture the overall impact of the pandemic on the health expenditures. We find at least nine COVID-related …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The precision of insulin dosage is essential in the process of diabetes treatment. The fact is providing precise dosage is almost impossible for clinicians since blood sugar levels are dynamically affected by many factors. Even though some auxiliary dosing systems have been proposed, the required real‐time physical data about the health situation of diabetics is still hard to synchronize to the end‐devices instantly. The traditional personalized drug delivery frameworks for accurate dosing of insulin always collect and transmit medical data in cleartext, which raises privacy problems. In this article, we propose a framework for an optimized insulin dosage via privacy‐preserving …
