General Human Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Action video gaming (AVG) experience has been found related to sensorimotor and attentional development. However, the influence of AVG experience on the development of emotional perception skills is still unclear. Using behavioral and ERP measures, this study examined the relationship between AVG experience and the ability to decode emotional faces and emotional word meanings. AVG experts and amateurs completed an emotional word-face Stroop task prior to (the pregaming phase) and after (the postgaming phase) a 1 h AVG session. Within-group comparisons showed that after the 1 h AVG session, a more negative N400 was observed in both groups of participants, …

Treatment of Chagas disease with nifurtimox requires age- and body weight-adjusted dosing, resulting in complex dosing instructions. Appropriate formulations are needed for precise and compliant dosing, especially in pediatric patients. We characterized the biopharmaceutical features of a standard nifurtimox 120-mg tablet and a 30-mg tablet developed to improve dose accuracy. Two open-label, randomized crossover studies were conducted in adult outpatients with Chagas disease. One study investigated whether 4 × 30-mg tablets and 1 × 120-mg tablet were bioequivalent and whether tablets can be administered as an aqueous slurry without affecting bioavailability. The second study investigated the effect of a high-calorie/high-fat …

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

© 2021 Changes in resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) under general anesthesia have been widely studied with the goal of identifying neural signatures of consciousness. This work has commonly revealed an apparent fragmentation of whole-brain network structure during unconsciousness, which has been interpreted as reflecting a break-down in connectivity and a disruption of the brain's ability to integrate information. Here we show, by studying rs-FC under varying depths of isoflurane-induced anesthesia in nonhuman primates, that this apparent fragmentation, rather than reflecting an actual change in network structure, can be simply explained as the result of a global reduction in FC. Specifically, …

Shared Neural Circuits For Visuospatial Working Memory And Arithmetic In Children And Adults, Anna A. Matejko, Daniel Ansari May 2021

Shared Neural Circuits For Visuospatial Working Memory And Arithmetic In Children And Adults, Anna A. Matejko, Daniel Ansari

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Visuospatial working memory (VSWM) plays an important role in arithmetic problem solving, and the relationship between these two skills is thought to change over development. Even though neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that VSWM and arithmetic both recruit frontoparietal networks, inferences about common neural substrates have largely been made by comparisons across studies. Little work has examined how brain activation for VSWM and arithmetic converge within the same participants and whether there are age-related changes in the overlap of these neural networks. In this study, we examined how brain activity for VSWM and arithmetic overlap in 38 children and 26 adults. …

Acute Conceptual Disorganization In Untreated First-Episode Psychosis: A Combined Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy And Diffusion Imaging Study Of The Cingulum, Yunzhi Pan, Kara Dempster, Peter Jeon, Jean Théberge, Ali R. Khan, Lena Palaniyappan

Department of Medicine Publications

Background: Disorganized thinking is a core feature of acute psychotic episodes that is linked to social and vocational functioning. Several lines of evidence implicate disrupted cognitive control, excitatory overdrive and oxidative stress relating to the anterior cingulate cortex as mechanisms of conceptual disorganization (CD). We examined 3 candidate mechanistic markers related to CD in firstepisode psychosis: glutamate excess, cortical antioxidant (glutathione) status and the integrity of the cingulum bundle that connects regions implicated in cognitive control. Methods: We used fractional anisotropy maps from 7 T diffusion-weighted imaging to investigate the bilateral cingulum based on a probabilistic white matter atlas. We …

Individual participant data meta-analysis of systematically sourced aphasia datasets described overall-language ability using the Western Aphasia Battery Aphasia-Quotient; auditory comprehension by Aachen Aphasia Test (AAT) Token Test; naming by Boston Naming Test and functional-communication by AAT Spontaneous-Speech Communication subscale. Multivariable analyses regressed absolute score-changes from baseline across language domains onto covariates identified a priori in randomized controlled trials and all …

Incorporating Adverse Childhood Experiences In Medical Student Trauma-Informed Training, Mary Catherine Minke May 2021

Incorporating Adverse Childhood Experiences In Medical Student Trauma-Informed Training, Mary Catherine Minke

PCOM Capstone Projects

One of the emerging fields in public health has become how behavior and personal experiences shape the health experience. Particularly, there is interest in understanding how the environment that one lives in changes one’s biology, causing disease, and how interventions can combat this change. A 1998 study conducted by the CDC and Kaiser Health first characterized negative household environments that suffered from dysfunction or abuse and showed how this could be a leading cause of death in adults (Vincent, et al., 1998). Researchers termed these Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Since that time, additional studies have found that those who suffered …

An Analysis Of Information Requirements For Passengers Of (Autonomous) Urban Air Mobility Vehicles, Dennis B. Beringer May 2021

An Analysis Of Information Requirements For Passengers Of (Autonomous) Urban Air Mobility Vehicles, Dennis B. Beringer

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2021

Much effort has been put into examining control/monitoring strategies for semiautonomous/autonomous urban air mobility vehicles (UAMVs). Less has been done to define information requirements for passengers to facilitate their cognitive comfort. Similarities and differences between driverless automobiles (and transport-category aircraft) and UAMVs will both affect what information is needed and what operational factors influence that need, including; perceived locus of control, shared fate, ambient visibility, familiarity with the area to be traversed, and operational status of the vehicle. Information impacted includes route/progress (location, estimated time of arrival), phase of flight, and system status as well as communications between passenger and …

The Impacts On The Flight Crew With The Implementation Of The Airborne Image Recorder System (Airs) In The Cockpit, Tatiana Lícia Da Silva Rangel, Marcelo Fernandes Da Costa

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2021

The technological resources used in aviation are widely used in the occurrence investigations process. However, they present technical-operational limitations, mainly regarding the reliable reproduction of the information that the flight crew really has. The implantation proposal of the Airborne Image Recording System (AIRs) arises to overcome these technical limitations presented by other technologies. Thus, this study aimed to verify if the implantation of AIRs in the cockpit could affect the pilot’s perception, behavior and performance during flight. Preliminary results with ten volunteer pilots performing in a flight simulator in Brazil pointed to a series of behavioral and performance changes when …

System-Theoretic Requirements Definition For Human Interactions On Future Rotary-Wing Aircraft, Sam M. Yoo, Andrew N. Kopeikin, Dro J. Gregorian, Adam T. Munekata, John P. Thomas, Nancy G. Leveson

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2021

Future rotary-wing aircraft designs are highly complex, optionally manned, and include advanced teaming concepts that create unknown human-automation interaction safety risks. System-Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) enables analysis of hazards on these complex systems. This paper demonstrates how to apply STPA in future helicopters' early concept development to prevent unacceptable losses. The system is modeled as a hierarchical control structure to capture interactions between components, including human and software controllers. Unsafe control actions are identified from these relationships and are used to systematically derive causal scenarios that arise from both hazardous interactions between system components and component failures. System requirements are …

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2021

The importance and benefit of improved monitoring is increasingly recognized. Improved training may be a valuable intervention. Our study (conducted 2019) assessed and trained airline First Officers on flight path monitoring skills. The exploratory study assessed monitoring pre-training in a simulator session that included monitoring challenges (8 or 7 events). A 1-hour interactive training followed, based on the Sensemaking Model of Monitoring; it presented concepts and examples using a slide deck, discussion, and simple activities. Post-training assessment used scenarios with analogous monitoring challenges (7 or 8 events) but a different setting. Performance showed significant and relatively consistent improvement. Training monitoring …

What We Know About Teamwork And Multiteam Coordination In Aviation: Contextual Factors Affecting Teamwork In Aviation, Andrea M. Georgiou, Glenn E. Littlepage, Michael B. Hein May 2021

What We Know About Teamwork And Multiteam Coordination In Aviation: Contextual Factors Affecting Teamwork In Aviation, Andrea M. Georgiou, Glenn E. Littlepage, Michael B. Hein

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2021

Technology and culture are two major influences that play a role in team processes and performance. Technology can lessen the cognitive workload; however, the use of technology has the potential to undermine shared cognition and teamwork. Aviation technology has been developed to support individual performance, without sufficient analysis of the impact on team performance. Due to the international nature of aviation, cultural differences can play a role in teamwork. Dimensions of national culture, such as power distance and gender roles, along with inadequate English proficiency may impact the effectiveness of communication and teamwork. Status barriers and physical barriers such as …

Survey Of Ticks And Tick-Borne Pathogens Associated With Feral Swine (Sus Scrofa) In Arkansas, Haylee Campbell May 2021

Survey Of Ticks And Tick-Borne Pathogens Associated With Feral Swine (Sus Scrofa) In Arkansas, Haylee Campbell

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Feral hogs (Sus scrofa L.) are an invasive species throughout the southeast United States and found in every Arkansas county. As feral hogs invade new habitat, they can disrupt ecosystems, damage agriculture systems, and bring ticks and tick-borne pathogens with them. There are no surveys of the tick species parasitizing the Arkansas feral hog populations or the pathogens they carry. This is a public health concern because feral hogs occupy often same geographical regions as humans and livestock and can harbor over 45 animal diseases and parasites. The ticks carried by feral hogs can carry tick-borne pathogens that can cause …

Early Bird Caregiver Education: A Program To Support Caregivers Of Individuals Living With Early Stage Dementia Or Memory Loss Or Other Cognitive Impairments, Mia Lopez, Tyler Trees, Brock Albee

Occupational Therapy | MSOT Capstone Projects

The number of individuals living with dementia continues to rise every year, with the need for caregiver education increasing as a result. Occupational therapists (OTs) have the skills and training needed to educate caregivers on how to care for not only themselves, but their loved one as well. The Early-Bird Caregiver Education Program was created to support caregivers of individuals living with early-stage dementia, memory loss, or other cognitive impairments in providing the highest quality of care possible, while also maintaining their own well-being. The program is intended to be led by an occupational therapy practitioner and aims to provide …

Occupation-Based Volunteer Training Program To Increase Social Engagement For Residents With Dementia In Skilled Nursing Facilities, Kiyomi Kuroda, Nhat Hoang, Victoria Ramia, Kelsy Wallace

Occupational Therapy | MSOT Capstone Projects

The population of individuals with dementia (IwD) is increasing, and IwD are often admitted into skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) due to greater need for care (Alzheimer’s Association, 2020b). Admittance leads to social isolation as a result of decreased engagement in co-occupations. Co-occupations are occupations, or meaningful activities necessary for wellbeing and survival, that are performed with others (American Occupational Therapy Association [AOTA], 2014). IwD exhibit behaviors and symptoms that create challenges for family caregivers to engage in co-occupations (Ono et al., 2014). Without guidance or support, family members or volunteers may be less likely to visit or facilitate quality visits, …

The Association Between Age And Unrecognized And Untreated Hypertension In Children With Chronic Kidney Disease, Chloe Douglas, J Roem, Joseph Flynn, Susan Furth, Bradley A. Warady, Susan Halbach May 2021

The Association Between Age And Unrecognized And Untreated Hypertension In Children With Chronic Kidney Disease, Chloe Douglas, J Roem, Joseph Flynn, Susan Furth, Bradley A. Warady, Susan Halbach

Presentations

Background: Younger age has been associated with unrecognized hypertension (HTN) in both the general pediatric population and in children on dialysis. An increased lifetime risk of cardiovascular disease and the association of HTN with chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression make optimal treatment of elevated blood pressure (BP) a key component of CKD management. However, the role of age in the recognition and treatment of HTN in non-dialysis pediatric CKD remains unknown.

Objective: Using data from the Chronic Kidney Disease in Children (CKiD) Cohort Study, we examined the relationship between age and recognized vs. unrecognized HTN, and the frequency with which …

Background: Among preterm infants, risk of poor outcomes has been linked to neonatal medical illness and neurobehavior. The combined contribution of neonatal medical morbidities and neonatal neurobehavior to 2 year outcomes has yet to be studied.

Objective: To determine associations between NICU Network Neurobehavioral Scale (NNNS) profiles, medical risk, and 2 year developmental outcomes.

Design/Methods: Multi-center study of 704 infants born <30 weeks gestation enrolled in the Neonatal Neurobehavior and Outcomes in Very Preterm Infants (NOVI) Study. NNNS were completed prior to NICU discharge and six profiles of neonatal neurobehavior were calculated by latent profile analysis. Two profiles (5 and 6) were considered atypical. Medical risk included brain injury, CLD, ROP, and NEC/sepsis. Outcomes at 2 years were Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development-III (BSID-III) composite scores and Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) T-scores. Generalized estimating equation (GEE) models were used to test the associations among NNNS profiles, neonatal medical risk, and 2 year developmental outcomes. GEE models accounted for multiple births. Covariates were research site, maternal socioeconomic status (SES), race or ethnicity, maternal primary language, partner status, maternal psychopathology, and infant sex.

Results: Follow-up data were available for 556/704 (78.9%) infants, of which 157 (28.2%) were Profile 5-6. Mother of Profile 5-6 infants were more likely to be non-English speaking and lower SES compared to Profiles 1-4 mothers (Table 1). In …
