Entertainment-Related Excessive Sound Exposure (Erese): Associated Audiometric-Threshold Patterns, Ashley Lenard, Antony Joseph Mar 2019

Entertainment-Related Excessive Sound Exposure (Erese): Associated Audiometric-Threshold Patterns, Ashley Lenard, Antony Joseph

AuD Capstone Projects - Communication Sciences and Disorders

Previous studies have reported that exposure to hazardous sounds can result in a mild to profound degree of temporary and permanent hearing loss. Typically, individuals exposed to loud industrial noise develop a notch or dip at or near the pure-tone test frequency 4,000 Hz. Exposure to hazardous recreational and work-place sound has been associated with noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and tinnitus has been associated with exposure to high-intensity concert sound as well. The purpose of this project was to report whether audiometric patterns have been reported in the literature that may be associated with entertainment-related excessive sound exposure (ERESE). Over …

Effects Of Free Maternity Service Policy In Kenya: An Interrupted Time Series Analysis, Evaline Lang'at, L. Mwanri, Marleen Temmerman

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Background: In Kenya, more than 6000 maternal deaths, and 35000 stillbirths occur each year. In June, 2013, the Government of Kenya abolished user fees for maternity care in all public health facilities under the Free Maternity Service (FMS) policy, to make maternity services accessible and affordable, and to reduce maternal and perinatal deaths. This study aims to establish whether the FMS policy has influenced use of, access to, and quality of maternity care in Kenya.

Methods: We did an observational retrospective study in three counties in Kenya. We used daily maternity registers in 90 public health facilities to extract monthly …

Using Electropalatography To Analyze Intra-Speaker Variability In German Second Language Fricative Production, Elizabeth D. Young Mar 2019

Using Electropalatography To Analyze Intra-Speaker Variability In German Second Language Fricative Production, Elizabeth D. Young

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Electropalatography (EPG) is a biofeedback system that tracks tongue contact with the palate during speech. The current study uses EPG data to examine the variability that occurs in speech production for individuals speaking a second language (L2). Five native German speakers and twelve native English speakers learning German as a second language were asked to produce the fricatives [ç], [x], and /ʃ/ in various linguistic contexts. Variability in center of maximal contact across the anterior-posterior dimension (“Center of Gravity” – COG) and duration for L2 production across sound type, L2 production across task type, L2 production across subject, and native …

Mutational Effects Of Human Dopamine Transporter At Tyrosine88, Lysine92, And Histidine547 On Basal And Hiv-1 Tat-Inhibited Dopamine Transport, Wei-Lun Sun, Pamela M. Quizon, Yaxia Yuan, Matthew J. Strauss, Richard Mccain Jr., Chang-Guo Zhan, Jun Zhu

Molecular Modeling and Biopharmaceutical Center Faculty Publications

Dysregulation of dopaminergic system induced by HIV-1 Tat protein-mediated direct inhibition of the dopamine transporter (DAT) has been implicated as a mediating factor of HIV-1 associated neurocognitive disorders. We have reported that single point mutations on human DAT (hDAT) at tyrosine88 (Y88F), lysine92 (K92M), and histidine547 (H547A) differentially regulate basal dopamine uptake but diminish Tat-induced inhibition of dopamine uptake by changing dopamine transport process. This study evaluated the effects of double (Y88F/H547A) and triple (Y88F/K92M/H547A) mutations on basal dopamine uptake, Tat-induced inhibition of DAT function, and dynamic transport process. Compared to wild-type hDAT, the Vmax values of [3 …

Transspinal Stimulation Increases Motoneuron Output Of Multiple Segments In Human Spinal Cord Injury, Lynda M. Murray, Maria Knikou

Publications and Research

Targeted neuromodulation strategies that strengthen neuronal activity are in great need for restoring sensorimotor function after chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). In this study, we established changes in the motoneuron output of individuals with and without SCI after repeated noninvasive transspinal stimulation at rest over the thoracolumbar enlargement, the spinal location of leg motor circuits. Cases of motor incomplete and complete SCI were included to delineate potential differences when corticospinal motor drive is minimal. All 10 SCI and 10 healthy control subjects received daily monophasic transspinal stimuli of 1-ms duration at 0.2 Hz at right soleus transspinal evoked potential (TEP) …

Ovalbumin-Sensitized Mice Have Altered Airway Inflammation To Agriculture Organic Dust, Kristi J. Warren, John D. Dickinson, Amy J. Nelson, Todd A. Wyatt, Debra J. Romberger, Jill A. Poole

Journal Articles: Internal Medicine

Agriculture exposures are associated with reducing the risk of allergy and asthma in early life; yet, repeated exposures later in life are associated with chronic bronchitis and obstructive pulmonary diseases. The objective of this study was to investigate the airway inflammatory response to organic dust extract (ODE) in mice with established ovalbumin (OVA)-induced experimental asthma. C57BL/6 mice were either OVA sensitized/aerosol-exposed or saline (Sal) sensitized/aerosol-challenged. Both groups were then subsequently challenged once with intranasal saline or swine confinement ODE to obtain 4 treatment groups of Sal-Sal, Sal-ODE, OVA-Sal, and OVA-ODE. Airway hyper-responsiveness (AHR) to methacholine, bronchiolar lavage fluid, lung tissues, …

A Phenomenological Exploration: The Black Bile Of Depression, Charles L. Dunlap Ii, M.A. Mar 2019

A Phenomenological Exploration: The Black Bile Of Depression, Charles L. Dunlap Ii, M.A.

Counseling and Family Therapy Scholarship Review

The phenomenon of depression manifests itself in many different forms, haunting us with its simultaneously inescapable, diffuse and pervasive presence. The rich thickness of depression is often severely drained and confined within the overall field of psychology, in which this phenomenon is regularly expressed as an all-encompassing, diagnostic label, to limitedly describe an almost endless number of symptomatic permutations. We shall attempt to distill something of depression’s essence in returning to its ancient, etymological, spiritual and metaphysical roots, in order to begin transcending the traditional clinical notion of depression as simply a disease to be cured and suppressed. The relatively …

The Phenomenal Space Of Soulful Silence, Ellen Wimmer Mar 2019

The Phenomenal Space Of Soulful Silence, Ellen Wimmer

Counseling and Family Therapy Scholarship Review

Where has silence gone? What does this mean for the spiritual soul? This analysis utilizes a phenomenological and qualitative lens to assess the way silence and the soul interact. The author posits that the relationship between silence and the soul, or soulful silence, creates a space to learn about the powerful phenomena that shape us. Through imagery, metaphor, and personal reflection the author embarks on a descriptive journey to explore what we learn by sitting in soulful silence, the phenomenological and spiritual implications of soulful silence, and how one must first become intimately familiar with their own soulful silence …

Department of Medicine Publications

Purpose

To describe a patient and procedure specific approach to selecting Venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis for men who undergo radical prostatectomy.

Methods

We performed a literature search and narrative review of VTE after radical prostatectomy. We describe the current paradigm of perioperative thromboprophylaxis and underlying rationale. Relevant findings from the European Association of Urology thromboprophylaxis guidelines are interpreted and summarized.

Results

The use of extended post-operative thromboprophylaxis for patients who undergo radical prostatectomy is appropriate when the risk of symptomatic VTE outweighs the risk of major bleeding. Patient and procedure factors impact VTE risk. Patient risk can be stratified as …

Supervised Dimension Reduction For Large-Scale "Omics" Data With Censored Survival Outcomes Under Possible Non-Proportional Hazards, Lauren Spirko-Burns, Karthik Devarajan

COBRA Preprint Series

The past two decades have witnessed significant advances in high-throughput ``omics" technologies such as genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics and radiomics. These technologies have enabled simultaneous measurement of the expression levels of tens of thousands of features from individual patient samples and have generated enormous amounts of data that require analysis and interpretation. One specific area of interest has been in studying the relationship between these features and patient outcomes, such as overall and recurrence-free survival, with the goal of developing a predictive ``omics" profile. Large-scale studies often suffer from the presence of a large fraction of censored observations and potential …

Background: Female positive/male negative HIV-serodiscordant couples express a desire for children and may engage in condomless sex to become pregnant. Current guidelines recommend antiretroviral treatment in HIV-serodiscordant couples, yet HIV RNA viral suppression may not be routinely assessed or guaranteed and pre-exposure prophylaxis may not be readily available. Therefore, options for becoming pregnant while limiting HIV transmission should be offered and accessible to HIV-affected couples desiring children.

Methods: A prospective pilot study of female positive/male negative HIV-serodiscordant couples desiring children was conducted to evaluate the acceptability, feasibility, and effectiveness of timed vaginal insemination. Eligible women were 18-34 years with regular …

Combining Radiation And Immune Checkpoint Blockade In The Treatment Of Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma., Gregor Manukian, Voichita Bar-Ad, Bo Lu, Athanassios Argiris, Jennifer M. Johnson

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Current treatment options, even though potentially curative, have many limitations including a high rate of complications. Over the past few years immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) targeting cytotoxic lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4), programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1), and programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) have changed treatment paradigms in many malignancies and are currently under investigation in HNSCC as well. Despite improvements in treatment outcomes and the implementation of combined modality approaches long-term survival rates in patients with locally advanced HNSCC remain suboptimal. Accumulating evidence …

Religious Couples Re-Storying After Infidelity: Using Narrative Therapy Interventions With A Focus On Attachment, Mark Karris , M.A., M.Div., Katarena Arger , M.A

Counseling and Family Therapy Scholarship Review

Attachment-focused narrative interventions used with religious couples of the Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) dealing with the effects of infidelity is discussed in this article. With religious couples, the couple attachment bond is commonly harmed after infidelity. The attachment bond with God can also be affected with one or both partners. Partners who once felt close and connected with God can feel angry and distant because of infidelity. Since the Abrahamic faiths are narrative-based religions, and an attachment bond with God is essential, attachment-focused narrative interventions can help couples re-story their relationship with each other and with God. Attachment-based …

Death And Life By A Thousand Cuts: Lessons Learned From The Deconstructive/Reconstructive Journey, Mark Karris , M.A., M.Div.

Counseling and Family Therapy Scholarship Review

Questioning one’s faith and beliefs about God, church, and their religion can be an excruciating experience. Since we all have an innate need to belong, feel safe, and be loved, we can be reticent to question and doubt our faith due to fear of rejection and isolation from two major figures: God and the church. For many people, it is not easy to separate the two. For some, the fear of losing God’s love, even momentarily, is terrifying. For others, the thought of leaving their beliefs behind may also feel like they have to leave their religious tribe behind, which …

Sexual trauma is an unfortunate but a common and often masked experience for many students in America. While sexual trauma in itself is not a mental health disorder, it can become a risk factor for many academic and mental health problems. Trauma-informed schools can play an important role in helping students deal with the aftercare of a traumatic experience.
