The Impact Of Master’S Level Education On The Assessment And Intervention Of Pediatric Swallowing, Andrea Seagren

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Purpose: Pediatric swallowing disorders is increasing in prevalence as medical advancements are made. This increase raises the need for more speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to be involved in the assessment and intervention of pediatric swallowing. However, discrepancies exist in the amount and level of education being provided during academic coursework in the area of pediatric swallowing.

Method 1: The investigation had a two-tier approach. Part one included a survey specifically targeting SLPs who graduated within the most recent accreditation standards (2014 to present) and masters level students in their second year of graduate school (n=100). Part two explored academic courses offered …

Old Dog With New Tricks: 99mtc-Sestamibi Spect-Ct For Renal Mass Differentiation, Zachary Beswick, Ishani Dalal

MERF 2019 - Teaching and Education

Small renal masses have historically presented a diagnostic challenge for radiologists and urologists. MRI and CT have a limited capability to differentiate benign and malignant small solid renal masses. The relatively poor negative predictive value of renal biopsy limits the ability to avoid surgical resection in small renal masses with negative biopsy. 99mTc-sestamibi SPECT-CT can be an important tool in directing the management of patients with renal masses. We present the analysis of 99mTc-sestamibi uptake patterns in patients with small renal masses who underwent further characterization of these masses with 99mTc-sestamibi SPECT-CT. Pertinent interpretation points in differentiating renal cell carcinoma from …

Inadvertent Radial Head Inversion During Closed Reduction Of A Pediatric Radial Neck Fracture, Zachary J. Sirois, Sarah Kreul, Craig F. Shank

Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Publications

Management of displaced pediatric radial neck fractures can be fraught with challenges. This unique case presents an 11-year-old female with a Salter-Harris type II radial neck fracture and how her radial head overturned 180° with the articular surface facing the radial shaft rather than the capitellum during closed manipulation under anesthesia. The malreduction subsequently required open reduction and highlights the importance of a careful stepwise approach to managing markedly displaced radial neck fractures. After closed reduction, meticulous assessment of intraoperative imaging when determining proper alignment is of the utmost importance as a result of the transverse nature of Salter-Harris type …

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Thrombosis of cerebral venous sinuses and/or cortical veins (CVST) is an infrequent type of stroke for which anticoagulation is considered standard of treatment. However, 40% of CVST patients have evidence of parenchymal changes like edema or haemorrhage on neuroimaging which complicates use of anticoagulation in such cases. Therefore, Novel Oral Anticoagulants (NOACs) are recently being used for treatment of CVST as they are associated with half the risk of intracerebral haemorrhage as caused by vitamin K antagonist. Case reports and case series have reported use of NOACs in CVST with good outcomes both clinically and radiologically. We report use of …

Successful And Unsuccessful Attempts To Swallow In A Reduced Aplysia Preparation Regulate Feeding Responses And Produce Memory At Different Neural Sites, Jeffrey M. Mcmanus, Hillel J. Chiel May 2019

Successful And Unsuccessful Attempts To Swallow In A Reduced Aplysia Preparation Regulate Feeding Responses And Produce Memory At Different Neural Sites, Jeffrey M. Mcmanus, Hillel J. Chiel

Faculty Scholarship

Sensory feedback shapes ongoing behavior and may produce learning and memory. Motor responses to edible or inedible food in a reduced Aplysia preparation were examined to test how sensory feedback affects behavior and memory. Feeding patterns were initiated by applying a cholinomimetic onto the cerebral ganglion. Feedback from buccal muscles increased the response variability and response rate. Repeated application of the cholinomimetic caused decreased responses, expressed in part by lengthening protractions. Swallowing strips of "edible" food, which in intact animals induces learning that enhances ingestion, increased the response rate, and shortened the protraction length, reflecting more swallowing. Testing memory by …

Section of Internal Medicine

An anomalous origin of the right coronary artery is usually asymptomatic. It is mostly found incidentally on an invasive diagnostic angiogram. It does lead to an increased risk of sudden cardiac death, especially in younger patients. We present a case of a 41-year-old who had presented to the hospital with complaints of chest pain. The patient was evaluated by cardiology who performed an angiography that identified an anomalous origin of the right coronary artery arising from the left coronary cusp but no evidence of coronary artery disease. Once identified, these anomalous vessels should be corrected surgically, as these conditions increase …
