Kinetic And Kinematic Analysis Of Landing A Grand Jeté Between Barefoot And Pointe Shoe Footwear For Dominant And Non-Dominant Legs, Cara Giordani Daybré
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Dancers wear pointe shoes while performing a Grand Jeté because the shoes produce an illusion that dancers are floating. Since dancers are required to absorb a significant amount of force in a small area on the toes during landing, this then causes a high incidence of injury. The question of how to perform a Grand Jeté safely for both feet remains unaddressed. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the vertical ground reaction force and lower body joint angular displacements in the skill of a Grand Jeté between barefoot and pointe shoes for both dominant and non-dominant legs. …

Juul is the most prominent producer of e-cigarettes, devices that vaporize nicotine for inhalation. These devices were developed to deliver nicotine in a tobacco-free vapor as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes. The Juul, in particular among other e-cigarettes, delivers a much higher concentration of dissolved nicotine than a standard cigarette. Although many smokers use Juuls as a method of quitting cigarettes, the overwhelming majority of Juul users are 15-21 years old and have never before used cigarettes, but now have unknowingly become heavily addicted to the nicotine contents. Research has found that 63% of Juul users do not know …

The Relationship Between Human Trafficking And An Occupational Therapy Career, Lexie France
The Relationship Between Human Trafficking And An Occupational Therapy Career, Lexie France
Rehabilitation, Human Resources and Communication Disorders Undergraduate Honors Theses
Occupational therapy crosses physical-mental health boundaries. It has been stated that occupational therapists have an innate duty to work with not only individuals, but society as a whole when individuals experience social and occupational injustices. An example of a social/occupational injustice that an individual may experience is human trafficking. Human trafficking not only affects the individual physically and emotionally, but it also has a pervasive impact on the individual’s ability to function as an occupational being. These experiences have the potential to affect the individual in varied contexts and environments, and over the lifespan. Due to an occupational therapist's proficiency …

There are approximately 122,000 people of Latino origin in San Francisco, which account for 15% of the total population (Census, 2010). Historically, Latinos have and still face several barriers to access healthcare and improvements in health (Aguirre-Molina, Molina & Zambrana, 2001). When the world was exposed to the spread of a new and unknown virus, the broader population suffered from the epidemic. The Latino community in San Francisco was and still is one of the hardest hit by the virus.

One of Worcester Interfaith’s goals is to eradicate the stigma of affordable housing in Worcester. Currently, the perception of affordable housing is of an image of unkept and old residences filled with destitute citizens who cannot afford basic needs to live in a city, let alone housing. This image is perpetuated by media, stigma, and a lack of education of the true reality of affordable housing and who its recipients are. Affordable housing-qualified citizens represent a range of educations, professions, age, race, and income levels. Affordable housing units, too, represent a variety of homes, many of which are extremely well-kept …

Selling Childhood: How The Middle Class Used Children In The Anti-Tuberculosis Movement (1930s-1940s), Hannah Fisher
Senior Theses
During the anti-tuberculosis movement of the 1930s and 1940s, children were chosen as focal points, with their roles shaped by society’s changing view of childhood, the emergence of the middle class, and the socioeconomic and political climate. Children were used by middle-class reformers as conduits through which to disseminate information and enact controls on the working class. Health education in schools had two main goals: (1) for educated children to become educated adults, and (2) for educated children to transform the behaviors of adults around them. Although researchers have studied middle-class interventions into children’s health, few have analyzed the role …

Inpatient Diabetes Education To Improve Disease Knowledge, Jennifer Miles
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing DNP Capstone Projects
Diabetes is a complex chronic disease currently affecting almost 25 million people in the United States (Ostling et al., 2017; Saccomano, 2014). The prevalence of diabetes is increasing yearly. Diabetes is a common comorbidity associated with hospitalizations and 30-day inpatient readmissions (Ostling et al., 2017; Chang, Kirby, Phelps, Rhee, Meneghine & Gunasekaran, 2017). Some retrospective studies have shown that inpatient diabetes education can reduce the readmission rate by up to 34% in this population (Healy et al., 2013). The Chronic Care Model (CCM) exemplifies the need to move the education to a proactive and preventative approach for further admissions instead …
A Dedicated Chaperone Mediates The Safe Transfer Of Mitoribosomal Proteins To Their Site Of Assembly, Gabrielle Ashley Hillman
A Dedicated Chaperone Mediates The Safe Transfer Of Mitoribosomal Proteins To Their Site Of Assembly, Gabrielle Ashley Hillman
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Mitochondrial ribosomes are functionally specialized for the synthesis of several essential inner membrane proteins of the respiratory chain. While remarkable progress has recently been made towards understanding the structure of mitoribosomes, the unique pathways and factors that facilitate their biogenesis remain largely unknown. This dissertation defines the physiological role of an evolutionarily conserved yeast protein called Mam33 in mitochondrial ribosome assembly. The biomedical relevance of this finding stems from the fact that mutations or changes in its expression of the human ortholog p32 result in mitochondrial dysfunction. In human patients, bi-allelic mutations cause severe multisystemic defects in mitochondrial energy metabolism, …

Detection Of Genetic Thrombophilia (Fa V Leiden & Pt20210 Mutation) Using Genexpert Technology With Iqcp Implementation, Mariegrace Saquilayan
Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Clinical Laboratory Sciences
Abstract
Individuals having Genetic Thrombophilia pose a higher risk of having a thrombotic event. It is crucial to determine these gene variants to prevent a possible episode of thromboembolism. With the current PCR method, it involves individual processing of DNA isolation, amplification, and detection using three (3) different instruments resulting to an increased turnaround time of 5 to 7 days and additional staff utilization. It is performed by repetitive manual sample pipetting and preparation of reagent master mixes in small vials. Results interpretations are entered manually to a worklist built initially for final verification. These processes increase the risk of …

While studies have demonstrated that the main psychoactive component of cannabis, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) alone induces placental insufficiency and fetal growth restriction, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Given that both (i) endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in pregnancy and (ii) gestational exposure to Δ9-THC leads to placental deficiency, we hypothesized that Δ9-THC may directly induce placental ER stress, influencing trophoblast gene expression and mitochondrial function. BeWo human trophoblast cells treated with Δ9-THC (3-30 μM) led to a dose-dependent increase in all ER stress markers and CHOP; these effects could be blocked with CB1R/CB2R antagonists. Moreover, expression of ER stress-sensitive genes ERRγ, VEGFA, …

© 2019 The Authors The presymptomatic phase of neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by structural brain changes without significant clinical features. We set out to investigate the contribution of functional network resilience to preserved cognition in presymptomatic genetic frontotemporal dementia. We studied 172 people from families carrying genetic abnormalities in C9orf72, MAPT, or PGRN. Networks were extracted from functional MRI data and assessed using graph theoretical analysis. We found that despite loss of both brain volume and functional connections, there is maintenance of an efficient topological organization of the brain's functional network in the years leading up to the estimated age …

Whole-integer ratios in musical rhythm are culturally universal. The reliable periodicity of rhythm inspired us to determine whether time perception, which is foundational to and inherently less structured than rhythm, is subject to similar biases. We created a random-interval generation task that exploits the nonrandom tendencies in perception and action in order to uncover the structural biases underlying temporal duration perception. Participants listened to and watched an audiovisual suprasecond temporal cue and were asked to subdivide it as randomly as possible in a prescribed number of responses. The results showed that the subdivision probability distributions were distinctly nonrandom, and closely …
Addressing The Need For Establishment Of School-Based Health Centers To Provide Reproductive Health Care In Philadelphia: A Meta-Analysis, Annam Humayun
PCOM Capstone Projects
OBJECTIVE: Currently, the communities of Philadelphia, which have predominantly African American residents, suffer from massive racial and ethnic health disparities. Children in these communities are at high risk of dropping out of school while also lacking access to reproductive health care. This myriad of unfortunate circumstances perpetuates the cycle of poverty that residents in these lowincome communities have been experiencing for decades. School-based health centers are a potential answer to this problem. The objective of this meta-analysis is to review published studies and carry out a meta-analysis to assess potential benefits and feasibility of SBHCs in the Philadelphia public …

Beverages containing low-calories sweeteners (LCSB) are used as alternatives to sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), yet their effects on the overall diet and effectiveness for weight management are unclear. The objective of this analysis was to examine energy and macronutrient intake among children who report LCSB and SSB consumption. The findings of this analysis challenge the utility of LCSB consumption as a strategy for weight management in children.
