Relationships Between Ambient Noise Levels And Vocal Effort When Working As A Restaurant Bartender, Ashley Bautista May 2019

Relationships Between Ambient Noise Levels And Vocal Effort When Working As A Restaurant Bartender, Ashley Bautista

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Workers in many different fields depend upon their voice for job performance. Vocal load, the way a voice is used and how much it is used, increases as a function of the total time speech is produced and the intensity (“loudness”) of the voice. Speakers tend to increase pitch, intensity, and duration of speech in the presence of noise, known as the Lombard Effect, which can lead to greater vocal fold stress and subsequent risk of vocal injury. In addition to increased risk of vocal injury, high levels of ambient noise might put workers at risk of auditory damage. …

Investigating The Antidiabetic Effect Of Metformin On Pyruvate Carboxylase, Guadalupe A. Solis May 2019

Investigating The Antidiabetic Effect Of Metformin On Pyruvate Carboxylase, Guadalupe A. Solis

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Metformin is the most commonly prescribed treatment for type II diabetes. While the clinical effects of this generic drug are established, exact targets of metformin action remain unclear. The hypothesis of the present study was that metformin lowers blood glucose through inhibition of pyruvate carboxylase (PC), an enzyme catalyzing the first committed step of gluconeogenesis. Because metformin is relatively low cost, it is widely accessible to communities worldwide; currently, 150 million individuals depend on metformin for treatment. Thorough investigation of all targets involved in action of metformin becomes crucial, as it further explains the adverse effects of the drug. The …

Students can benefit from simulation in-that sometimes during clinicals they don't get to provide care where they are solely responsible for the patient. Students need to learn to prioritize and provide care for their patients. Learn students’ perceptions and their practical application of their simulated learning experience.

Impacts Of Contraception On Women’S Decision-Making Agency In Indonesia, Michaela J. Fogarty May 2019

Impacts Of Contraception On Women’S Decision-Making Agency In Indonesia, Michaela J. Fogarty

Undergraduate Economic Review

Increasing access to contraception has the potential to empower women and improve the economic standing of families across the globe. Many researchers have explored the impacts of contraception on families and the determinants of women’s level of empowerment, but little scholarship exists on their direct relationship. This paper explores the impacts of contraceptive use on women’s empowerment, measured by a sum of women’s household decision-making agency. Panel data from three rounds of the Indonesian Family Life Survey is used to run multiple regressions with household fixed effects. Results suggest that women who use contraception have input on two additional types …
