Gender Competence and Quality of Care:
What is the Role of Healthcare Providers in Transgender Healthcare Disparities?
An Integrative Literature Review
Mary Losacco
Faculty Sponsor: Elizabeth P. Anderson RN, PhD
Background: Unlike cisgender individuals, whose gender identities match the sexes they were given at birth, transgender individuals exhibit gender incongruence, because their gender identities differ from the sexes they were assigned at birth. Transgender individuals are still underrepresented in research and reporting, leading to obstacles in understanding possible health disparities within the community due to lack of recognition and knowledge of these issues. Early recognition by health care providers …

Introduction: This data depicts a startling picture; depression affects a large portion of the population at some point in their life. Pharmacology and psychotherapy are the treatments of choice for the depressed. Half of the depressed clients do not respond well enough to conventional treatments to reach remission from their symptoms (Danielsson et al., 2014; Halter, 2014). Studies have found that exercise for as little as 10 days can help alleviate symptoms. Aerobic exercise has been studied heavily …

Faculty Sponsor: Elizabeth P. Anderson RN, PhD
Background: The year 2000 was a pivotal year for multiracial individuals. Changes to the U.S. Census Bureau included acknowledging multiracial individuals. However, where multiracial individuals and healthcare intersect, the research is relatively new and limited. Multiracial individuals confound many assumptions about race. Uncertainty exists between socially constructed racial categories and populations that have evolved genetic patterns independently over time but fail to fit perfectly within categorical lines. Although social changes has raised awareness on mixed race and multiracial individuals, a deeper …

The Efficacy of Incentive Spirometry in Postoperative Pulmonary Complication Prevention:
An Integrative Review
Ziyad Thalji
Background: Both the postoperative pulmonary complications (PPC) of atelectasis and pneumonia increase risk of fatality among postoperative patients. Pulmonary stasis, as the result of surgery, promotes along with the inability to expel secretions and ventilate the parenchyma the potential for multi-drug resistant pathogens for compromised host entry. Post-operative atelectasis risk occurs when there is reduced respiratory muscle activity and strength for inspiration and expiration. The resultant pooling of secretions can promote the growth of pathogens to a common form known as pneumonia. The incentive spirometer …

Diabetes Distress Differentiation from Depression
An Integrated Review of Literature
Anthony Warpecha
Background and Significance: According to Bennetter, Clench-Aas, and Raanaas (2016), people with diabetes have a higher probability of developing depression. These rates were found to be about 2-3 times as likely for individuals with diabetes to have depression compared to individuals who do not have diabetes (Bennetter et al., 2016). This has profound effects on an individual such as decreased quality of life, complications increase, and a lowered life expectancy (Dieter & Lauerer, 2017). There is also the increase in hospital stays, admissions, and health expenditure. However, more …

An In Silico Study Of G Protein-Coupled-Receptor Activation, Specifically In The Corticotropin Releasing Factor Receptor And The Glucagon-Like Peptide Receptor, Nicolas Angelo Scorese
Theses and Dissertations
The drug discovery process is an extremely long and expensive process that modern computational methods help to alleviate. Through the use of computational methods, we provide information and insight into the activation methods of class B GPCRs so that future drugs can be developed to have less side effects. The first study focuses on the corticotropin releasing factor receptor, which is a good drug target for anxiety and depression. A mechanism of activation was theorized which focuses less on molecular switches (as has been the focus of several papers) and more on large scale conformation at the intracellular region of …

Effect Of Hyperoxia On Type-1 Diabetic Mouse Model, Samuel Ignatious Bolleddu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Administration of Hyperoxia (>90 % oxygen) is a pervasive intervention to supplement respiratory needs in patients admitted in ICU/critical care units. Current literature suggests that prolonged use of Hyperoxia therapy is directly associated with in-hospital mortality. The exact reason for this high mortality under Hyperoxia is unknown. Recent explorations in Dr. Panguluri lab identified that dysregulation of Kv channels plays a vital role in the pathophysiology of Hyperoxia-induced pulmonary and cardiac complications using animal models. The proposed research will focus on the part of Hyperoxia in generating cardiotoxicity and ventricular remodeling in the type-1 diabetes patients using the Akita, …

Associations Between Comorbid Tdp-43, Lewy Body Pathology And Neuropsychiatric Symptoms In Alzheimer's Disease, Ece Bayram, Guogen Shan, Jeffrey L. Cummings
School of Public Health Faculty Research
More than half of the patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) have comorbidities including TDP-43 and Lewy bodies, which are also associated with frontotemporal lobar degeneration and dementia with Lewy bodies, respectively. These comorbidities may help explain the overlapping neuropsychiatric symptoms between AD and other dementias. Data on 221 AD patients with Neuropsychiatric Inventory-Questionnaire were obtained from the National Alzheimer’s Coordinating Center. TDP-43 was associated with aberrant motor activity, whereas Lewy bodies were associated with anxiety, irritability, sleep behavior, and appetite problems. The associations between these comorbidities and neuropsychiatric symptoms were more significant for patients with sparse diffuse plaques.
