Although the prevalence of obesity has rapidly increased in the low- and middle-income countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) regions, child undernutrition remains a public-health challenge. We examined region-specific sociodemographic determinants of this double burden of malnutrition, specifically, the co-occurrence of child stunting and overweight, using Demographic and Health Survey and Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey data (2003–2016) from 11 countries in the MENA (n = 118,585) and 13 countries in the LAC (n = 77,824) regions. Purpose: Practice guidelines recommend patients with non-variceal upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeds who have a high risk of active bleeding, nonbleeding visible vessels, and adherent clots should be given proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) intravenous (IV) bolus followed by continuous infusion after esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). The use of PPIs before EGD has shown to reduce the requirement for EGD, however, there are no studies evaluating the difference in outcomes of continuous infusion PPI versus intermittent IV bolus PPI prior to EGD. Retinitis Pigmentosa is a disease which can cause blindness and affects around 2.5 million people worldwide. It is a disorder that has a multitude of ways of being inherited, such as autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive as well as X-linked and mitochondrial linked disorder. While some versions of RP may be syndromic (20%-30%), a majority of cases are in fact non-syndromic. This descriptive correlational study examined the relationships between and among diabetes self-care, diabetes time management, and diabetes distress in women with type 2 (T2DM). A gap of knowledge exists between these variables and this study, guided by Orem’s self-care theory, aimed to identify these relationships and predictors of diabetes self-care. The sample (N = 188) was comprised of predominately White (81.4%) women recruited from multiple office locations, community hospitals, and diabetes support groups predominately from the Mid-Atlantic Region (64.04%). Background: Sudden cardiac arrest is a major global health concern, and survival of patients with ischemia-reperfusion injury is a leading cause of myocardial dysfunction. Malignant melanoma is an aggressive neural crest cell-derived neoplasm with a propensity for metastasis to almost any organ. Gastrointestinal metastasis may manifest as gallbladder polyps. We report a case of metastatic malignant melanoma diagnosed in an 81-year-old male after cholecystectomy performed for acute cholecystitis. Cholecystectomy remains the standard of care for treatment of isolated gallbladder metastasis, especially in the setting of symptomatic disease. Mutation-directed chemotherapeutic and immunotherapeutic modalities serve as efficacious adjunctive therapy in addition to primary surgical resection for this rare condition.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate push dose vasopressor (PDV) usage patterns, efficacy, and safety in a single community hospital emergency department when used for rapid sequence intubation (RSI). Pre-intubation hypotension is a positive correlator to incidences of cardiac arrest. Precautions should be in place to prevent and treat hypotension during emergent intubation. The emerging strategy of utilizing PDV in emergency department (ED) patients is an underexplored and potentially efficacious option.

Design:A quantitative non-experimental descriptive design was followed.

This research study describes the potential relationship between perceived high stress levels and failure in high-stakes performance testing in a baccalaureate undergraduate nursing environment. In addition, it determines if there is a marked difference between perceived stress levels in accelerated and traditional students. To answer these questions, the researcher administered the Cohen’s self-report Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) to baccalaureate nursing students fifteen minutes before high-stakes performance skills competency testing. Of 102 voluntary participants, 33 were of the accelerated nursing track and 69 were of the traditional track. Encompassing both groups, nine students failed the skills competency test.

Objective: To evaluate the sex differences in cognitive course over 4 years in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients with and without mild cognitive impairment (MCI) compared to controls. Methods: Four-year longitudinal cognitive scores of 257 cognitively intact PD, 167 PD-MCI, and 140 controls from the Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative were included. Longitudinal scores of men and women, and PD with and without MCI were compared. Results: Women had better verbal memory, men had better visuospatial function. There was no interaction between sex, diagnostic group, and/or time (4-year follow-up period). Conclusions: Sex differences in cognitive course in de novo PD are similar …

The oncoprotein transcription factor MYC is overexpressed in the majority of cancers. Key to its oncogenic activity is the ability of MYC to regulate gene expression patterns that drive and maintain the malignant state. MYC is also considered a validated anticancer target, but efforts to pharmacologically inhibit MYC have failed. The dependence of MYC on cofactors creates opportunities for therapeutic intervention, but for any cofactor this requires structural understanding of how the cofactor interacts with MYC, knowledge of the role it plays in MYC function, and demonstration that disrupting the cofactor interaction will cause existing cancers to regress. To date, there has been little-to-no literature on how Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs engage, refine and enhance students’ non-cognitive traits and abilities throughout a DPT curriculum. This dissertation had five foundational research questions that examined whether there was a statistically significant correlation between Emotional Intelligence (EI) and student success throughout a DPT program. Cyanidioschyzon merolae (C. merolae) is a primitive, unicellular species of red alga that is considered to be one of the simplest self-sustaining eukaryotes. The highly elementary nature of C. merolae makes it an excellent model organism for studying evolution as well as cell function and organelle communication. In our study, we hypothesize that C. merolae contains the minimal assembly of proteins to make up their Nuclear Pore Complexes (NPCs), and hence are the first ancestral NPCs. BACKGROUND: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) is a highly lethal cancer. Clinicians commonly refer to surgical therapy as resection with curative intent. However, PDA cure rates after resection remain unknown and the definition of cure remains vague. We investigated how patients (the majority undergoing resection), family members, and clinicians understand the concept of cure, to better inform discussions with patients regarding PDA prognosis.

Social, economic, and environmental factors contribute to patients’ recovery following hospitalization. However, little is known about how home health nurses make decisions based on their assessment of these factors. The purpose of the current study was to explore the nonclinical factors that home health nurses evaluate and describe how these factors influence care planning decisions. Semi-structured inter-views conducted with 20 visiting nurses from three home health agencies were analyzed using conven-tional content analysis. Three nonclinical factor themes emerged: Social Support, Home Environment and Neighborhood, and Finances and Insurance Barriers. Students in college learn the importance of balancing their academic studies with their sleep and exercise habits. The amount of sleep and exercise a student recieves has been examined in previous research studies. In these studies it was found that exercise had a postive affect on the amount of sleep received. However, there is little research on the affect academic discipline has on sleep habits and/or exercise habits of students in college. The purpose of this study is to examine the sleep and exercise habits among students in multiple academic majors at Bowling Green State University.
