Socioemotional Selectivity And Psychological Health In Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Patients And Caregivers: A Longitudinal, Dyadic Analysis, Suzanne C. Segerstrom, Edward J. Kasarskis, David W. Fardo, Philip M. Westgate
Psychology Faculty Publications
Objective: Socioemotional selectivity theory predicts that as the end of life approaches, goals and resources that provide immediate, hedonic reward become more important than those that provide delayed rewards. This study tested whether these goal domains differentially affected psychological health in the context of marital dyads in which one partner had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a life-limiting disease.
Design: ALS patients (N = 102) being treated in three multidisciplinary clinics and their spouses (N = 100) reported their loneliness, financial worry and psychological health every 3 months for up to 18 months.

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents
Systems and methods for determining body weight predictions and human conditions are disclosed. A body weight may be predicted by capturing at least one image of a human, and determining, from the image, a body weight prediction of the human by processing the at least one image with a data processor. The body weight prediction may further be based on an age-based weight factor. A model such as a neural network model may be used to predict body weight.

Understanding Young Adult Survivors Of Childhood Cancers’ Participation In Late Effects Screening: A Mixed Methods Approach, Kristen Trost Mantlo
Understanding Young Adult Survivors Of Childhood Cancers’ Participation In Late Effects Screening: A Mixed Methods Approach, Kristen Trost Mantlo
Health Services Research Dissertations
Significant advancements in the treatment of childhood cancers have helped to increase the 5-year survival rate from 56% in the early 1970s to approximately 80-85% in the early 2000s (Greenlee, Murray, Bolden, & Wingo, 2000; Hampton, 2005). Treatment modalities such as chemotherapy and radiation have led to many serious long-term side effects, known as late effects. Between 60% and 90% of survivors develop some form of long-term chronic condition due to their treatment and up to 40% of those conditions will be life-threatening (Howlader, N. et al., 2013). While the majority of young adult survivors of childhood cancer are at …

Despite poor access to quality surgical and anesthesia care for the majority of the world's people, with greatest impact on low- and middle-income countries, surgery has only recently begun to gain acceptance as a necessary component of global health. As a leader in global surgical funding, the field of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is uniquely positioned to influence change in global policy and financial support. For improvements in surgical access and outcomes worldwide, investment in surgical systems, commitment to national surgery, obstetric, and anesthesia planning, and continued evaluation and improvement of care delivery should be pursued.

A Glass Marble Ball In The Maxillary Sinus, Transorbital Floor Penetration: A Case Report, Krissanaporn Jirawarakul
Chulalongkorn Medical Journal
Foreign bodies in the sinus are uncommon and transorbital foreign bodies in the maxillary sinus are veryrare. We hereby described a case of a glass marble ball about 1.6 cm in diameter that penetrated into the rightmaxillary sinus through the orbital floor without globe rupture. The foreign body in the sinus should be removedto prevent further infection and other complications. In this case, the glass marble ball was removed by a transnasalendoscopic technique with a widened maxillary antrum after guarding of orbital ball upward in order to preventthe orbital injury. There were no immediate and long term postoperative complications.

Section of Cardiology
Subaortic membrane (SAM) is a discrete fibromuscular structure which causes left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and leads to the symptomatology of valvular aortic stenosis. It is known to be associated with other congenital cardiac defects in around 30% of cases. However, it has not been associated with chronic pulmonary thromboembolism in the past. We present a case of a middle-aged Pakistani man who presented with dyspnea and hemoptysis. He was found to have a SAM and severe pulmonary hypertension on transthoracic echocardiogram. A coronary angiogram revealed non-obstructive left main coronary artery disease. A computed tomography (CT) scan chest was done …

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa
Background: Expired carbon dioxide (ECO2) indicates degree of lung aeration immediately after birth. Favourable ventilation techniques may be associated with higher ECO2 and a faster increase. Clinical condition will however also affect measured values. The aim of this study was to explore the relative impact of ventilation factors and clinical factors on ECO2 during bag-mask ventilation of near-term newborns.
Methods: Observational study performed in a Tanzanian rural hospital. Side-stream measures of ECO2, ventilation data, heart rate and clinical information were recorded in 434 bag-mask ventilated newborns with initial heart rate <120 beats per minute. We studied ECO2 by clinical factors (birth weight, Apgar scores and initial heart rate) and ventilation factors (expired tidal volume, ventilation frequency, mask leak and inflation pressure) in random intercept models and Cox regression for time to ECO2 >2%.
Results: ECO2 rose non-linearly with increasing expired tidal volume …

Adverse Effects Of Opioid Dependency On Central And Peripheral Aspects Of The Neuromuscular System, Cindy Yang
Student Publications
Prevalence of chronic pain and health care costs have caused an escalation of opioid dependency. The current national crisis involving opioid dependency and drug overdose are growing problems that need to be addressed. Since 2000, there has been an increased awareness of pain relief; more people are looking at alternative ways to induce pain relief and stricter guidelines in prescription of addictive opioid medications (Manchikanti et al., 2012). Despite growing efforts, opioid use and dependency has risen dramatically in the past few years; since 1999, there has been an increase in the number of opioids sold and opioid-related deaths in …

Reflexology is the practice of applying pressure to particular points on the ears, hands and feet to impact the health of specific parts of the body. It is a form of complementary therapy that is used for diseases and conditions that have long lasting symptoms and need pain management. In reflexology, each pressure point acts as a sensor on the feet and hands and is linked with organs, glands and muscles in specific parts of the body. It involves the idea that a force or energy is flowing along paths, called meridians, in the body to all organs and any …

Hemostatic Complications Associated With Ventricular Assist Devices., Talal Hilal, James O Mudd, Thomas G Deloughery
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Hemostatic complications are common in patients with ventricular assist devices. The pathophysiologic mechanisms that lead to dysregulated hemostasis involve complex interactions between device surface, sheer stress, and blood flow. These factors lead to various manifestations that require a thorough understanding of the interplay among platelets, coagulation factors, and red cells. In this article, we review the pathophysiology of hematologic complications (bleeding, acquired von Willebrand disease, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, hemolysis, stroke and pump thrombosis), the clinical manifestations, and the management of each. We summarize the evidence available for management of these entities and provide a pragmatic clinical review.

BACKGROUND: The DelIVery for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension clinical trial was a multi-center, prospective, single arm, Investigational Device Exemption study utilizing a fully implantable, programmable intravascular delivery system consisting of a pump and a catheter for intravenous treprostinil. The study met its primary endpoint and demonstrated that the intravascular delivery system significantly reduced catheter related complications at 22,000 subject-days of follow-up compared with a predefined objective performance criterion. Here we summarize the results obtained during a 6.4-year follow-up period.
METHODS: Throughout study follow-up, participants had clinic visits and medication refills at least every 12 weeks (dependent on the subjects' dose). All …

Keep The Cat, Change The Care Pathway: A Transformational Approach To Managing Fel D 1, The Major Cat Allergen, Ebenezer Satyaraj, Harold James Wedner, Jean Bousquet
2010-2019 OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Allergies to cats are the most common animal-origin allergy, and affect approximately 1 in 5 adults worldwide. The prevalence of allergy to furry animals has been increasing, and allergy to cats is a major risk factor for the development of asthma and rhinitis. The diagnosis of cat allergy is now well established. The exact significance of component-resolved diagnosis in the diagnosis of cat allergy remains to be fully understood. Allergen avoidance is effective but often has a psychologic impact. Allergen immunotherapy is not well demonstrated. There is a need for innovative approaches to better manage cat allergens. Next-generation care …
