Teaching Visually Impaired College Students In Introductory Statistics, Brian W. Stone, Donovan Kay, Anthony Reynolds Jan 2019

Teaching Visually Impaired College Students In Introductory Statistics, Brian W. Stone, Donovan Kay, Anthony Reynolds

Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Instructors of postsecondary classes in statistics rely heavily on visuals in their teaching, both within the classroom and in resources like textbooks, handouts, and software, but this information is often inaccessible to students who are blind or visually impaired (BVI). The unique challenges involved in adapting both pedagogy and course materials to accommodate a BVI student may provoke anxiety among instructors teaching a BVI student for the first time, and instructors may end up feeling unprepared or “reinventing the wheel.” We discuss a wide variety of accommodations inside and outside of the classroom grounded in the empirical literature on cognition …

Effects Of Naltrexone On Alcohol And Nicotine Use In Female P Rats, Usman Z. Hamid, Sarah E. Maggio, Meredith A. Saunders, Kimberly Nixon, Mark A. Prendergast, Richard L. Bell, Michael T. Bardo

Posters-at-the-Capitol Presentations

The objective of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of the opioid antagonist naltrexone at reducing the consumption of EtOH and nicotine in female alcohol-preferring (P) rats. P rats have been selectively bred to have a genetic predisposition for alcohol abuse, which allows them to be used as an animal model of alcoholism. P rats readily self-administer i.v nicotine (Le et al., 2016), have EtOH consumption during adolescence that is similar to that seen in adulthood, and operantly respond for EtOH until they are impaired/intoxicated (Bell et al., 2006). Thus, P rats are a useful model for studying …

Objective: To study the association of lead exposure and MetS in United States (U.S.) adults.

Methods: Data from 523 male and 528 female participants aged 20 years and older from the 2013 to 2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were analyzed. Based on blood lead distribution in males and females, participants were categorized into low and high blood lead groups in both genders. Adjusted logistic regression analysis was used …

Who Is Testing? Demographic And Sexual Risk Factors Associated With Hiv Testing Among African American College Students, Elizabeth Gonder-Strutz Jan 2019

Who Is Testing? Demographic And Sexual Risk Factors Associated With Hiv Testing Among African American College Students, Elizabeth Gonder-Strutz

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Despite significant progress made in reducing HIV diagnoses, many populations are still disproportionately affected. Although African American college students tend to engage in safer sex practices than their peers, they are still at an elevated risk for contracting HIV. Therefore, it is important that HIV prevention programs understand the unique needs and risk factors among African American college students. HIV testing is an essential component of HIV prevention. This study examined the relationship between HIV testing and demographic and behavioral factors among African American college students from two universities. The study found that older students (upperclassmen) are significantly more likely …

Systemic Sclerosis Presenting With Bilateral Retinal Cotton Wool Spots, Christina E. Borchers, Ronald E. Warwar

Dermatology Faculty Publications

Systemic sclerosis is a systemic inflammatory diseasecharacterized by a triad of autoimmune reactions, vasculopathy, and fibrosis due to collagen deposition. Thediffuse sclerosis type includes vascular abnormalities in theskin (puffy, taut, thickened skin, pitting of fingertips), soft tissues(arthralgias, myalgias), lungs (pulmonary hypertension, interstitial fibrosis), gastrointestinal tract (esophagealdysmotility, GERD), kidneys (scleroderma renal crisis), andheart (arrhythmias, heart failure).Rarely, systemic sclerosis can present with signs of retinalvascular occlusion and cotton wool spots in the eyes. Thefollowing case report describes a patient presenting with cottonwool spots as an early manifestation of systemic sclerosis.

Kiaa1549-Braf Expression Establishes A Permissive Tumor Microenvironment Through Nfκb-Mediated Ccl2 Production, Ran Chen, Chanel Keoni, Christopher A. Waker, Robert M. Lober, Robert M. Lober, Yihsien Chen, David H. Gutmann

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

KIAA1549-BRAF is the most frequently identified genetic mutation in sporadic pilocytic astrocytoma (PA), creating a fusion BRAF (f-BRAF) protein with increased BRAF activity. Fusion-BRAF-expressing neural stem cells (NSCs) exhibit increased cell growth and can generate glioma-like lesions following injection into the cerebella of naïve mice. Increased Iba1+ monocyte (microglia) infiltration is associated with murine f-BRAF-expressing NSC-induced glioma-like lesion formation, suggesting that f-BRAF-expressing NSCs attract microglia to establish a microenvironment supportive of tumorigenesis. Herein, we identify Ccl2 as the chemokine produced by f-BRAF-expressing NSCs, which is critical for creating a permissive stroma for gliomagenesis. In addition, f-BRAF regulation of Ccl2 production …

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

The analysis of HIV-1 sequences has helped understand the viral molecular epidemiology, monitor the development of antiretroviral drug resistance, and design candidate vaccines. The introduction of single genome amplification (SGA) has been a major advancement in the field, allowing for the characterization of multiple sequences per patient while preserving linkage among polymorphisms in the same viral genome copy. Sequencing of SGA amplicons is performed by capillary Sanger sequencing, which presents low throughput, requires a high amount of template, and is highly sensitive to template/primer mismatching. In order to meet the increasing demand for HIV-1 SGA amplicon sequencing, we have developed …

De Novo Assembly Of The Brugia Malayi Genome Using Long Reads From A Single Minion Flowcell, Joseph R. Fauver, John Martin, Gary J. Weil, Makedonka Mitreva, Peter U. Fischer

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

Filarial nematode infections cause a substantial global disease burden. Genomic studies of filarial worms can improve our understanding of their biology and epidemiology. However, genomic information from field isolates is limited and available reference genomes are often discontinuous. Single molecule sequencing technologies can reduce the cost of genome sequencing and long reads produced from these devices can improve the contiguity and completeness of genome assemblies. In addition, these new technologies can make generation and analysis of large numbers of field isolates feasible. In this study, we assessed the performance of the Oxford Nanopore Technologies MinION for sequencing and assembling the …
