Validity And Reliability Of The Authentic Happiness Scale, Esat Sanli, Seher Balci Celik, Cem Gencoglu Jan 2019

Validity And Reliability Of The Authentic Happiness Scale, Esat Sanli, Seher Balci Celik, Cem Gencoglu

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Studies on the concept of happiness have led to questions about whether all symptoms of happiness correspond to a real and healthy emotional state. Therefore, in this research, a scale was developed to examine the concept of “authentic happiness” coined by Seligman. Firstly, literature that explains authentic happiness and defines its relationship to other psychological concepts was reviewed, and then a theoretical framework was developed based on this information and the psychometric characteristics of the scale were introduced. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the fit indices were compatible with two-dimensional structure. These two dimensions have been …

Reverse Genetics Systems As Tools To Overcome The Genetic Diversity Of Lassa Virus, Brett Beitzel, Christine E. Hulseberg, Gustavo Palacios Jan 2019

Reverse Genetics Systems As Tools To Overcome The Genetic Diversity Of Lassa Virus, Brett Beitzel, Christine E. Hulseberg, Gustavo Palacios

United States Army: Publications

Lassa virus is endemic in a large area of sub-Saharan Africa, and exhibits a large amount of genetic diversity. Of the four currently recognized lineages, lineages I–III circulate in Nigeria, and lineage IV circulates in Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia. However, several newly detected lineages have been proposed. LASV genetic diversity may result in differences in pathogenicity or response to medical countermeasures, necessitating the testing of multiple lineages during the development of countermeasures and diagnostics. Logistical and biosafety concerns can make it difficult to obtain representative collections of divergent LASV clades for comparison studies. For example, lack of a cold …

Unmet Expectations In Healthcare Settings: Experiences Of Transgender And Gender Diverse Adults In The Central Great Plains, Heather Meyer

Trans Collaborations Academic Papers

Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals face a long-term, multi-faceted process if they choose to begin a gender affirmation journey. Decisions to go on hormone therapy and/or have a surgical procedure necessitate the TGD individual to set up an appointment with a healthcare provider. However, when TGD patients interact with healthcare practitioners, problems can arise. This article documents and categorizes the types of unmet expectations that are common in the TGD patient-healthcare provider social dynamic in the Central Great Plains of the United States. Utilizing a community-based participatory research model, qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted with 27 TGD individuals about …

Two small Indian mongooses (Herpestes auropunctatus) were live-captured in 2012 at separate locations on the Hawaiian Island of Kaua'i, which was previously considered to be free of this invasive species. Genotypes from these two individuals were compared to genotypes of H. auropunctatus from the islands of Hawai'i (n =39), O'ahu (n =91), Maui (n = 39), and Moloka'i (n = 19) to determine the island of origin of the Kaua'i individuals. Genotypes were generated from each individual using five microsatellite loci. Genetic clustering was estimated by Bayesian inference of spatial clustering of individuals and …

Reducing Prairie Dog Populations And Damage By Castration Of Dominant Males, Gary W. Witmer Jan 2019

Reducing Prairie Dog Populations And Damage By Castration Of Dominant Males, Gary W. Witmer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) occur widely across the prairie states of North America. They compete with livestock for forage, transmit plague, and damage lawns, landscaping, and property. Interest in non-lethal methods, such as immunocontraception, is growing; however, reductions in the population due to contraception may be offset by increases in survival because adults and yearlings are not subject to the energetic demands of reproduction, and lower densities may increase the amount of resources available to growing offspring. Surgical sterilization provides a means for modeling these effects. Thus, we castrated males prior to the 1998 breeding season to simulate the …

Accuracy Of Different Sequencing In Bimaxillary Orthognathic Surgery: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Thatchawee Borikanphanitphaisan, Ellen Wen-Ching Ko

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Introduction: Compared to the classic maxilla-first sequence in bimaxillary orthognathic surgery, inverted mandible-sequence has been encouraged for potentially higher accuracy. However, evidence regarding this topic is lacking. Methods: A systematic review of the literature on different sequencing of bimaxillary surgery was conducted, gathering from following databases: Cochrane, Pubmed, Scopus, Medline (Ovid), Web of Science, ScienceDirect. Articles mentioning “sequencing”, “mandible-first”, “orthognathic surgery” of at least case-report level of evidence were included without restriction. Relevant articles were included for quality assessment and extracted data for indications of mandible-first sequence from all studies. Meta-analysis of surgical accuracy at upper central incisors in horizontal …

General information and management of acromegaly are reviewed, and the role of orthodontists in the treatment of patients with acromegaly is discussed.

Management Of A Patient With Euryprosopic Face And Upper Central Diastema, Chung-Teng Chang, Yi-Min Liu, Yuen-Yung Tsang, Huei-Mei Tsai Jan 2019

Management Of A Patient With Euryprosopic Face And Upper Central Diastema, Chung-Teng Chang, Yi-Min Liu, Yuen-Yung Tsang, Huei-Mei Tsai

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

An adult female has upper central diastema complicated with a complete deep bite and spacing in lower dentition. The broad face and ovoid shaped dental arch form require special attention as an intrinsic transverse dimensional skeletal malocclusion. The treatment modality therefore should be totally different from other deep bite cases with crowding or tapered dental arch. The space retention after active treatment is of prime important. Root divergence of upper incisors and bodily protraction movement of lower posterior teeth were the main concerns during treatment. Fixed lingual retainer and long term follow up are essential for stable outcome.

The Home Health Aide Experience: Opportunities For Occupational Therapy, Julia Mindlina Jan 2019

The Home Health Aide Experience: Opportunities For Occupational Therapy, Julia Mindlina

Occupational Therapy Doctorate Capstone Projects

Introduction: Home health aides undergo significantly increased physical stress in their work with minimal support which may contribute to decreased satisfaction with a home health aide position (Czuba et al., 2012). Providing frequent assistance with hands-on self-care tasks and transfers has been correlated with an increased occurrence of physical injury (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, 2010). Occupational therapists have specialized skills in task-adaptation, environmental modification, and proper body mechanics that can assist home health aides in maximizing their client’s function and decreasing risk of injury such as back strain. However, little is known about how home health aides …

Faculty Research 2019

High-throughput studies constitute an essential and valued source of information for researchers. However, high-throughput experimental workflows are often complex, with multiple data sets that may contain large numbers of false positives. The representation of high-throughput data in the Gene Ontology (GO) therefore presents a challenging annotation problem, when the overarching goal of GO curation is to provide the most precise view of a gene's role in biology. To address this, representatives from annotation teams within the GO Consortium reviewed high-throughput data annotation practices. We present an annotation framework for high-throughput studies that will facilitate good standards in GO curation and, …

Faculty Research 2019

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder caused by mutations in the FBN1 gene. Although many peripheral tissues are affected, aortic complications, such as dilation, dissection and rupture, are the leading causes of MFS-related mortality. Aberrant TGF-beta signalling plays a major role in the pathophysiology of MFS. However, the contributing mechanisms are still poorly understood. Here, we aimed at identifying novel aorta-specific pathways involved in the pathophysiology of MFS. For this purpose, we employed the Fbn1 under-expressing mgR/mgR mouse model of MFS. We performed RNA-sequencing of aortic tissues of 9-week-old mgR/mgR mice compared with wild-type (WT) mice. With …

Faculty Research 2019

While abnormalities related to carbohydrates (glycans) are frequent for patients with rare and undiagnosed diseases as well as in many common diseases, these glycan-related phenotypes (glycophenotypes) are not well represented in knowledge bases (KBs). If glycan-related diseases were more robustly represented and curated with glycophenotypes, these could be used for molecular phenotyping to help to realize the goals of precision medicine. Diagnosis of rare diseases by computational cross-species comparison of genotype-phenotype data has been facilitated by leveraging ontological representations of clinical phenotypes, using Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO), and model organism ontologies such as Mammalian Phenotype Ontology (MP) in the context …

The 20-M Shuttle Run: Assessment And Interpretation Of Data In Relation To Youth Aerobic Fitness And Health, Grant R. Tomkinson, Justin J. Lang, Joel Blanchard, Luc A. Léger, Mark S. Tremblay

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is a good summative measure of the body’s ability to perform continuous, rhythmic, dynamic, large-muscle group physical activity, and exercise. In children, CRF is meaningfully associated with health, independent of physical activity levels, and it is an important determinant of sports and athletic performance. Although gas-analyzed peak oxygen uptake is the criterion physiological measure of children’s CRF, it is not practical for population-based testing. Field testing offers a simple, cheap, practical alternative to gas analysis. The 20-m shuttle run test (20mSRT)—a progressive aerobic exercise test involving continuous running between 2 lines 20 m apart in time to …
