Small bowel adenocarcinoma is a rare but well-known complication of Crohn's disease. The diagnosis of small bowel adenocarcinoma remains difficult since its presentation is highly variable and mimics active or obstructive Crohn's disease. The diagnosis is often delayed and typically detected only at surgery in an advanced stage with a poor prognosis. We report a case of metastatic ileal adenocarcinoma in a patient with Crohn's disease with prolonged survival. Our case describes serial promising treatment options of these advanced malignancies and raises a possible role for checkpoint immunotherapy.

Rnai Transfection Optimized In Primary Naïve B Cells For The Targeted Analysis Of Human Plasma Cell Differentiation, T. Shih, S. De, B. J. Barnes

Journal Articles

Upon antigen recognition, naïve B cells undergo rapid proliferation followed by differentiation to specialized antibody secreting cells (ASCs), called plasma cells. Increased circulating plasma cells are reported in patients with B cell-associated malignancies, chronic graft-vs.-host disease, and autoimmune disorders. Our aim was to optimize an RNAi-based method that efficiently and reproducibly knocks-down genes of interest in human primary peripheral B cells for the targeted analysis of ASC differentiation. The unique contributions of transcriptional diversity in species-specific regulatory networks and the mechanisms of gene function need to be approached directly in human B cells with tools to hone our basic inferences …

Journal Articles

© 2019, The Author(s). The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs744373 in the bridging integrator-1 gene (BIN1) is a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). In the brain, BIN1 is involved in endocytosis and sustaining cytoskeleton integrity. Post-mortem and in vitro studies suggest that BIN1-associated AD risk is mediated by increased tau pathology but whether rs744373 is associated with increased tau pathology in vivo is unknown. Here we find in 89 older individuals without dementia, that BIN1 rs744373 risk-allele carriers show higher AV1451 tau-PET across brain regions corresponding to Braak stages II–VI. In contrast, the BIN1 rs744373 SNP was not associated …

Altered Dynamics Of Visual Contextual Interactions In Parkinson's Disease., M. I. Vanegas, A. Blangero, J. E. Galvin, A. Di Rocco, A. Quartarone, M. F. Ghilardi, S. P. Kelly

Journal Articles

Over the last decades, psychophysical and electrophysiological studies in patients and animal models of Parkinson's disease (PD), have consistently revealed a number of visual abnormalities. In particular, specific alterations of contrast sensitivity curves, electroretinogram (ERG), and visual-evoked potentials (VEP), have been attributed to dopaminergic retinal depletion. However, fundamental mechanisms of cortical visual processing, such as normalization or "gain control" computations, have not yet been examined in PD patients. Here, we measured electrophysiological indices of gain control in both space (surround suppression) and time (sensory adaptation) in PD patients based on steady-state VEP (ssVEP). Compared with controls, patients exhibited a significantly …

An Effective Method For Acute Vagus Nerve Stimulation In Experimental Inflammation, A. S. Caravaca, A. L. Gallina, L. Tarnawski, K. J. Tracey, V. A. Pavlov, Y. A. Levine, P. S. Olofsson

Journal Articles

© 2019 Caravaca, Gallina, Tarnawski, Tracey, Pavlov, Levine and Olofsson. Neural reflexes regulate inflammation and electrical activation of the vagus nerve reduces inflammation in models of inflammatory disease. These discoveries have generated an increasing interest in targeted neurostimulation as treatment for chronic inflammatory diseases. Data from the first clinical trials that use vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease suggest that there is a therapeutic potential of electrical VNS in diseases characterized by excessive inflammation. Accordingly, there is an interest to further explore the molecular mechanisms and therapeutic potential of electrical VNS in a range …

A Website Designed To Equip Occupational Therapists With Information And Strategies For Holistically Addressing Sexual Activity With The Geriatric Population, Amber Fernandez, Ashleigh Mora

Occupational Therapy Capstones

As individuals age, they are likely to experience occupational deprivation. Occupational deprivation occurs in many forms. Many older adults experience occupational deprivation relating to the activity of daily living, sexual activity. Older adults experience many age-related changes, which impacts their ability to engage in sexual activity. Health care professionals have a responsibility to ensure older adults are able to engage in safe sexual practices. Yet, healthcare professionals, including occupational therapists, are not addressing this need with their clients in a routine manner. A literature review was conducted in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of all the barriers older adults …

Combined Multi-Segmental Surgical-Orthodontic Treatment In Skeletal Class Iii With Facial Asymmetry And Gummy Smile: Two-Year Stability, Rouh-Hwai Wang, Hui-Ling Chen

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

This is a case of skeletal class III malocclusion with facial asymmetry, gummy smile, and maxillary canting, treated with bimaxillary surgery and orthodontic treatment. The two-jaw surgery was performed including a 3-pieces LeFort I segmental osteotomy, anterior segment impaction with clockwise rotation, and bilateral sagittal split osteotomies with genioplasty. Through the 2-year-4-month treatment procedure, the skeletal and occlusal relationship turned to be normal with esthetically pleasing smile and profile. Furthermore, in the two-year follow-up, we found the treatment results were quite stable no matter in skeletal or dental aspects.

Nursing Faculty Research Publications

Peripheral venous catheters (PVC) are often used to provide hydration, medications, and blood products when the length of therapy is expected to be less that one week. Pain and phlebitis are frequent complications of PVC. Diclofenac and EMLA have been used to minimize these adverse effects, however, conflicting results have been reported regarding which has better outcomes. This double-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted to compare the efficacy of EMLA and Diclofenac (TDP) in attenuating PVC pain and phlebitis. The inpatient setting was chosen because of the higher frequency of PVC insertions, allowing for a sufficient sample size. One hundred …
