Fenestration Of The Proximal Left Ovarian Vein., Mayank Patel, Joe Iwanaga, Rod J Oskouian, R Shane Tubbs
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
A fenestration in the left ovarian vein was found in a fresh-frozen female cadaver. The opening did not have any vessels or additional anatomical structures passing through it. The ovarian vein is also referred to as the female gonadal vein. This type of anatomical variation is clinically relevant in procedures that deal with the manipulation of the gonadal veins, specifically conditions such as ovarian vein thrombosis, ovarian vein stenosis, and pelvic congestion syndrome.

The Current Trend Of The Translational Research Paradigm., Paul J Choi, R Shane Tubbs, Rod J Oskouian
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
The translational research paradigm is a process of discovering basic science concepts and applying the knowledge in clinical practice, aiming to improve patient care. The stages involved in the paradigm form a complex network of shared knowledge amongst research collaborators, including patients. This nature of the paradigm allows those involved to work together effectively. However, the translational research paradigm is often overlooked by many scientists, educators, and research institutions. Hence, a large amount of comprehensive and hugely invested research projects fail to make a scientific impact. We aim to outline and describe this paradigm in order to aid in the …

Specificity In Sociality: Mice And Prairie Voles Exhibit Different Patterns Of Peer Affiliation, Annaliese K. Beery, Jennifer D. Christensen, Nicole S. Lee, Katrina L. Blandino
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Social behavior is often described as a unified concept, but highly social (group- living) species exhibit distinct social structures and may make different social decisions. Prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) are socially monogamous rodents that often reside in extended family groups, and exhibit robust preferences for familiar social partners (same- and opposite-sex) during extended choice tests, although short-term preferences are not known. Mice (Mus musculus) are gregarious and colonial, but in brief laboratory tests of social preference they typically prefer social novelty. This preference for novel vs. familiar peers may represent a species-specific difference in social decision-making between mice and prairie …

BACKGROUND: Transcriptomic datasets often contain undeclared heterogeneity arising from biological variation such as diversity of disease subtypes, treatment subgroups, time-series gene expression, nested experimental conditions, as well as technical variation due to batch effects, platform differences in integrated meta-analyses, etc. However, current analysis approaches are primarily designed to handle comparisons between experimental conditions represented by homogeneous samples, thus precluding the discovery of underlying subphenotypes. Unsupervised methods for subtype identification are typically based on individual gene level analysis, which often result in irreproducible gene signatures for potential subtypes. Emerging methods to study heterogeneity have been largely developed in the context of …

Introduction. Extremity lipomas and well-differentiated liposarcomas (WDLs) are difficult to distinguish on MR imaging. We sought to evaluate the accuracy of MRI interpretation using MDM2 amplification, via fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH), as the gold standard for pathologic diagnosis. Furthermore, we aimed to investigate the utility of a diagnostic formula proposed in the literature. Methods. We retrospectively collected 49 patients with lipomas or WDLs utilizing MDM2 for pathologic diagnosis. Four expert readers interpreted each patient's MRI independently and provided a diagnosis. Additionally, a formula based on imaging characteristics (i.e. tumor depth, diameter, presence of septa, and internal cystic change) …

Background: Change in the prevalence of raised blood pressure could be due to both shifts in the entire distribution of blood pressure (representing the combined effects of public health interventions and secular trends) and changes in its high-blood-pressure tail (representing successful clinical interventions to control blood pressure in the hypertensive population). Our aim was to quantify the contributions of these two phenomena to the worldwide trends in the prevalence of raised blood pressure. Methods: We pooled 1018 population-based studies with blood pressure measurements on 88.6 million participants from 1985 to 2016. We first calculated mean systolic blood pressure (SBP), mean …
Subclinical Atherosclerosis Vascular Evaluation (Save): Nurse Practitioner Barriers To And Facilitators Of Research Utilization Regarding Screening For Subclinical Atherosclerosis, Gina Pritchard
DNP Projects
The project identified factors affecting implementation of evidence-based non-invasive screening tests to identify early stage cardiovascular disease (CVD). The use of coronary artery calcium scores and carotid intima media thickness testing improves accuracy of risk stratification over risk factor scoring systems alone. The purpose of this project was to identify NP’s perceived barriers to and facilitators of utilization of evidence-based non-invasive CVD screening tests and to make recommendations for improvements in implementation. The SAVE project consisted of a cross-sectional survey of 64 nurse practitioners, recruited using a multi-pronged strategy, using Funk’s barriers instrument plus two additional qualitative questions regarding intent …

Myo/Nog cells, named for their expression of MyoD and noggin, enter the eye during early stages of embryonic development. Their release of noggin is critical for normal morphogenesis of the lens and retina. Myo/Nog cells are also present in adult eyes. Single nucleated skeletal muscle cells designated as myofibroblasts arise from Myo/Nog cells in cultures of lens tissue. In this report we document the presence of Myo/Nog cells in the lens, ciliary body and on the zonule of Zinn in mice, rabbits and humans. Myo/Nog cells were rare in all three structures. Their prevalence increased in the lens and ciliary …

Investigating AMPK signalling regulation of autophagy in a model of ovarian tumour dormancy
Jeremi Laski and Trevor G. Shepherd
Background:
Ovarian cancer is the most deadly gynecologic malignancy in women. A particular subset of this disease, epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC), is responsible for over 70% of all diagnosed ovarian cancer cases, yet the mechanisms governing disease progression are poorly understood. One of the unique hallmarks of EOC metastasis lies in the process of spheroid formation, whereby tumour cells aggregate into larger 3D structures. These EOC spheroids have been shown to be metabolically dormant, while concurrently up-regulating autophagy (cellular waste …

Multisensory Integration And Autistic Traits Using Non-Sociolinguistic Information, Sébastien A. Lauzon, Samantha E. Schulz, Zack I. Cohen, Ryan A. Stevenson
Western Research Forum
Background: Sensory processing issues are one of the most common complaints in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). One area of sensory difficulties in ASD that has been the focus of intense research in recent years is multisensory integration (MSI), or the ability to bind auditory and visual information into a single, unified percept. While integration of social or linguistic information is consistently shown to be an area of difficulty in ASD, results are less clear with simple, non-sociolinguistic stimuli. This study aims to address this ambiguity by determining whether MSI of non-sociolinguistic sensory information is related to traits and symptomatology …

Background: Student athletes can experience a number of stressors above and beyond those of their classmates, one being competition anxiety in their specific sport, which is common among varsity athletes (Storch, Storch, Killiany, & Roberti, 2005). Unfortunately, the tools to help with the demands of their sport mentally are often overlooked by not only the athletes, but their coaches, teammates, and supporters. The purpose of the present study was to introduce imagery as a tool to help deal with competition anxiety (i.e., fear of failure), and to improve confidence, mental well-being, and performance.
Methods: Two female varsity level throwers ( …

Molecular beacons are important bioanalytical probes which are most often
constructed from a single-stranded oligonucleotide which has been labeled at
opposite termini with a fluorophore and a quencher. When the fluorophore and
quencher are in close proximity, no fluorescence is observed due to FRET
(Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer). DABCYL (4-dimethylaminoazobenzene-
4'-carboxylic acid) has been used as a quencher in the molecular beacon to absorbs
excitation energy from a fluorophore and to dissipate the energy as heat. However,
DABCYL is unable to form a base-pair and is conventionally placed as an overhanging
residue. This produces a derivative wherein the chromophore has …

Developing Novel Therapeutics For Bacterial Lung Infections, Brandon J. Baer, Ruud Veldhuizen, Cory Yamashita
Western Research Forum
Background: Bacterial lung infections are leading causes of death worldwide. Unfortunately, increasing resistance to antibiotics and the inflammation often accompanying these infections are leading to poor outcomes despite antibiotic intervention. Complicating treatment further, the tree-like branching structure of the lung makes drug delivery to distal sites of infection difficult. Our research aims to address these challenges by developing new therapeutics and new tools to improve and assess drug delivery, bacterial killing and inflammation. Our therapy combines host defense peptides, which have been shown to kill antibiotic-resistant bacteria and down regulate inflammation, with a pulmonary vehicle, exogenous surfactant, that can improve …

Background: Motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) are the leading cause of death for people under the age of 17 years. Almost 80% of rear seat motor vehicle passengers are children. Previous studies have shown that a large fraction of injuries to children in MVCs involved the head and chest. In this study, the hypothesis that children under the age of eight using a forward-facing child restraint system (FFCRS) will have more severe head injuries than children using any other type of restraints in an MVC was tested.

Background: There has been a continuing trend towards decreasing the length of hospital stay for patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA). Outpatient procedures, discharging patients on the same day as surgery, have now become possible yet little research has been done to examine the impact this might have on patients during early recovery. We aimed to investigate the impact of discharge time on gait and patient-reported outcomes in the early post-operative period.
Methods: We measured gait velocity, stride length, single-limb support and single-limb support symmetry preoperatively, at discharge from the hospital, and two-, six- and 12-weeks postoperatively. Participants also completed …
