Sigma Xi Student Research Day
Introduction
Radiation therapy is often used for tumors of the optic nerve. The challenge with irradiating tumors surrounding structures associated with the eye is the risk of exposing the optic nerve, or other structures important to maintaining vision to potentially damaging radiation.
Fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (FSRT) is commonly used for the treatment of optic nerve sheath meningiomas (ONSMs) for vision preservation. However, long term visual data in the literature is limited. We investigated visual outcomes in 27 patients with ONSMs after FSRT.

Background: Missing health care appointments without canceling in advance results in a no show, a vacant appointment slot that cannot be offered to others. No show can be reduced by reminding patients about their appointment in advance. In this regard, mobile health (mHealth) strategy is to use text messaging (short message service, SMS), which is available on all cellular phones, including cheap low-end handsets. Nonattendance for appointments in health care results in wasted resources and disturbs the planned work schedules.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of the current text messaging (SMS) and call-based …

An Education Intervention To Increase Rounding And Toileting And Reduce Falls In A Hospital Acute Care Of The Elderly (Ace) Unit, Amelia Grayson
Doctoral Projects
Introduction: Falls are the most common accident reported in acute care hospitals and patients who are 65 and older are the most vulnerable. Falls can lead to physical and emotional injury, reduced mobility and functioning, increased length of hospital stay, increased healthcare costs, and admission to long-term care facilities. In 2008, the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has eliminated reimbursement to hospitals for treatment of injuries resulting from a fall during hospitalization. Research on fall prevention in adult acute care found multifactorial interventions that address multiple risk factors for falls are the most successful at prevention. This …

Adolescence is a complex period of concurrent mental and physical development that facilitates adult functioning at multiple levels. Despite the growing number of neuroimaging studies of cognitive development in adolescence focusing on regional activation patterns, there remains a paucity of information about the functional interactions across these participating regions that are critical for cognitive functioning, including memory. The current study used structural equation modeling (SEM) to determine how interactions among brain regions critical for memory change over the course of adolescence. We obtained functional MRI in 77 individuals aged 8–16 years old, divided into younger (ages 8–10) and older (ages …

Chemotherapy is one of themajor therapeutic options for cancer treatment. Chemotherapy is often associated with a low therapeutic window due to its poor specificity towards tumor cells/tissues. Antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) technology may provide a potentially new therapeutic solution for cancer treatment. ADC technology uses an antibody-mediated delivery of cytotoxic drugs to the tumors in a targeted manner, while sparing normal cells. Such a targeted approach can improve the tumor-to-normal tissue selectivity and specificity in chemotherapy. Considering its importance in cancer treatment, we aim to review recent efforts for the design and development of ADCs. ADCs are mainly composed of an …

Alternative Techniques For Alfaxalone Anesthesia Induction In Dogs And Cats, Angie Lagos
Alternative Techniques For Alfaxalone Anesthesia Induction In Dogs And Cats, Angie Lagos
LSU Master's Theses
Alfaxalone is a neuroactive synthetic steroid (Brewster & Bodor, 1990) that produces anesthetic induction with dose- and speed-dependent cardiorespiratory depression in dogs and cats (Chiu et al. 2016; Warne et al., 2015). At clinical doses in unpremedicated dogs (2 mg kg-1) and cats (5 mg kg-1), alfaxalone induces a mild decrease in systemic vascular resistance, systemic blood pressure (Muir et al., 2009; Muir et al., 2008), apnea, hypoventilation, and hypoxemia (Muir et al. 2009; Muir et al., 2008). The cardiorespiratory side effects from alfaxalone induction could be prevented by reducing the total dose of alfaxalone necessary …

Counseling The Media: Bridging Pop Cultural Borders With The Mental Health Profession, Stephanie J. Durham, Michael A. Desposito
Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)
Professional counseling is often defined as a professional relationship meant to empower diverse people towards their mental health and wellness goals (Kaplan, Tarvydas, & Gladding, 2014). While counselors continue to provide professional services in many settings, counseling is not always portrayed in a positive light within television and film. Shows such as 13 Reasons Why and How I Met Your Mother both portray an inaccurate perception of counseling characters who disregard their ethical duties despite the American Counseling Association’s Code of Ethics (2014) mandates for safe-guarding the wellbeing of those seeking counseling, honoring multicultural diversity, and advocating for social justice. …

Shared Decision-Making As Experienced By Rehabilitation Students On An International Service-Learning Trip: A Phenomenological Investigation, Mary Zadnik, Suzanne Trotter, Thomas Werner
Occupational Therapy Collection
The value of service-learning has been well documented in medical and allied health education (Abedini, Gruppen, Kolars, & Kumagai, 2012; Ekelman, Dal Bello-Haas, Bazyk, & Bazyk, 2003; Pechak, Gonzalez, Summers, & Capshaw, 2013; Pechak & Thompson, 2009; Ryan-Krause, 2016). Several studies have been conducted looking at cultural experiences and clinical reasoning (Corbett & Fickert, 2009; Sheppard & Landry, 2015; Nouvet, Chan & Schwartz, 2016). What has not been well-examined though is the concept of shared decision-making by those engaged in service-learning. The purpose of this phenomenological investigation (i.e. study) was to identify how occupational therapy (OT) and physical therapy (PT) …
