Background: Brain tumor vasculature can be significantly compromised and leakier than that of normal brain blood vessels. Little is known if there are vascular permeability alterations in the brain adjacent to tumor (BAT). Changes in BAT permeability may also lead to increased drug permeation in the BAT, which may exert toxicity on cells of the central nervous system. Herein, we studied permeation changes in BAT using quantitative fluorescent microscopy and autoradiography, while the effect of chemotherapy within the BAT region was determined by staining for activated astrocytes. Introduction: There is scant literature on the use of opioids among community-dwelling elderly with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). Methods: We adopted a retrospective, cross-sectional study design using Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey data from 2006 to 2013. The study sample included elderly community-dwelling Medicare beneficiaries who were diagnosed with chronic pain conditions and had Medicare fee-for-service plans for the entire year. We conducted bivariate c2 test and multivariate logistic regression to examine the relationship between opioid use and ADRD status. Results: The study sample included 19,347 Medicare beneficiaries; 7.7% of them had ADRD. We found no statistically significant difference …

In 2011, the Office for Civil Rights issued a “Dear Colleague Letter” instructing universities to take action regarding sexual assault on college campuses. Specifically, universities must better educate students on the prevention of sexual assault, in the hope of reducing violence against women. Previous research is inconclusive on the involvement of intercollegiate student-athletes in incidences of sexual assault; however, recent high-profile cases of sexual misconduct at universities indicate that student-athletes are not immune to this issue. Pain associated with labor is a particular concern of obstetric patients. Epidural analgesia is currently the frontline treatment for pain associated with labor, with epidural patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) often being utilized (Braveman, Scavone, Blessing, & Wong, 2013). Preoxygenation plays a vital role in ensuring patient safety for all patient populations, especially those considered clinically obese. The negative pathophysiological effects obesity has related to body habitus and respiratory mechanics increases the risk of unexpected adverse events. Obese patients encounter a 50% decrease in functional residual capacity (FRC) when undergoing general anesthesia. A clinical affiliate hospital in Mississippi lacked a best practice clinical policy regarding the most appropriate skin preparation solution to use prior to neuraxial anesthesia. The evidence showed that alcoholic chlorhexidine is the optimal solution due to advanced characteristics which help reduce infection. Reducing infections can potentially reduce further complications for the patient, hospitalization length, and cost. Also, chlorhexidine was found safe to use for neuraxial anesthesia if cross-contamination is avoided and adequate drying time is allowed. Lastly, alcoholic povidone-iodine is an appropriate alternate if 0.5% chlorhexidine is unavailable.

Food deserts indicate limited access to and affordability of healthy foods. One potential mediator is the availability of healthy food in non-traditional outlets such as dollar-discount stores, stores selling produce at the fixed $1 price. Simulated patients are becoming increasingly used in the educational program of future speech-language pathologists. The use of standardized patients provides the opportunity to teach students clinical skills in a controlled environment (Bradley, 2006; Zraick, 2012). Simucase, a speech-language pathology software program, allows clinicians to practice their assessment and treatment skills on virtual patients and is a valid method when teaching clinical skills. Background: Pyrazosulfuron-ethyl is a long lasting herbicide in the agro-ecosystem and its residue is toxic to crops and other non-target organisms. A better understanding of molecular basis in pyrazosulfuron-ethyl tolerant organisms will shed light on the adaptive mechanisms to this herbicide.

Results: Pyrazosulfuron-ethyl inhibited biomass production in Rhodopseudomonas palustris PSB-S, altered cell morphology, suppressed flagella formation, and reduced pigment biosynthesis through significant suppression of carotenoids biosynthesis. A total of 1127 protein spots were detected in the two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. Objectives: Compare and contrast the number and type of interventions made by student pharmacists who participated in an adult internal medicine APPE in the US to an internal medicine APPE in Kenya.

Methods: A US-based faculty-led, four-week internal medicine APPE with interprofessional team rounding that provides care for underserved patients in an urban setting and hosts 16 students annually was compared to a faculty-led, eight-week internal medicine APPE in Kenya that hosts on average 24 students annually. Objective: The objective was to assess the intercultural learning of students enrolled in an interdisciplinary, active learning course with a focus on empathy and healthcare within an Honors College.

Methods:

This 2-credit course met twice weekly for active-learning session for 16 weeks. Topics covered included cultural dimensions, mindfulness, learning styles and four intercultural core competencies. Assignments included an intercultural development plan, on-line discussion board reflections for three required service-learning activities and completion of a Cultural Competence Badge. Identifying the biopsychosocial needs of mothers who have been released from jail is critical to understanding the best ways to support their health and stability after release. In May through August 2014, we interviewed 15 mothers who had been released from an urban jail about their reentry experiences, and we analyzed transcripts for themes. Eight domains of community reentry emerged through analysis: behavioral health services, education, employment, housing, material resources, medical care, relationships with children, and social support. Participants defined barriers to successful reentry, which paralleled the social determinants of health, and shared suggestions that could be used to mitigate …

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of foam rolling (FR) and passive recovery (PR) on symptoms of delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and military-based performance. METHODS: Nine participants completed DOMS-inducing exercise protocol (EP), followed by FR or PR. Military-based tasks (MBTs) were performed 24 hours later. Rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and rating of muscle pain (RMP) were measured. A repeated measure analysis of variance and effect sizes were used to compare MBTs results. Friedman test compared perceptual variables across baseline, FR, and PR. Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-ranks test evaluated EP RPE and post-EP and post-recovery RMP between FR and PR. Atlantoaxial joint septic arthritis and superior ophthalmic vein thrombosis are uncommon manifestations of Staphylococcus aureus infection. A 68-year-old man presented with acute-onset neck pain and diplopia. Imaging studies revealed atlantoaxial septic arthritis and right superior ophthalmic vein thrombosis. Blood cultures grew methicillin-susceptible S. aureus. We review the literature describing these 2 uncommon manifestations of a common pathogen.

Background: In mTNBC, anti-PD-1/L1 monotherapy is most effective when administered early in the course of disease, with recent trials demonstrating overall response rates (ORR) of 23-26% in the first-line setting and 5-6% in later lines. This may reflect iatrogenic lymphopenia from preceding cytotoxic chemotherapy. Furthermore, curative-intent chemotherapy is associated with prolonged suppression of naïve CD4+ cells, a T-cell subset that may play a critical role in the generation of de novo anti-tumor immune responses.
