Prevalence Of Orthorexia Nervosa Tendencies In U.S. Didatic Program In Dietetics Students, Mariana Olga Serback
Prevalence Of Orthorexia Nervosa Tendencies In U.S. Didatic Program In Dietetics Students, Mariana Olga Serback
Theses - ALL
Due to high rates of chronic disease, there is a push for healthy eating. Although the adoption of a nutritious diet may seem harmless, in some susceptible individuals it may transform into an unhealthy obsession, referred to as Orthorexia Nervosa (ON). In the current study, ON tendencies were examined in 596 U.S. Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) students. ON symptomology was assessed using ORTO-15, Eating Habits Questionnaire (EHQ), and Inflexible Eating Questionnaire (IEQ). Self-reported dietary intakes were examined via the Automated Self-Administered 24-Hour Dietary Assessment Tool (ASA-24), which was used to determine diet quality via the Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2015. …

Linear (HR)n and cyclic [HR]n peptides (n = 4,5) containing alternate arginine and histidine residues were synthesized. The peptides showed 0–15% cytotoxicity at 5–100 μM in human ovarian adenocarcinoma (SK-OV-3) cells while they exhibited 0–12% toxicity in human leukemia cancer cell line (CCRF-CEM). Among all peptides, cyclic [HR]4 peptide was able to improve the delivery of a cell impermeable fluorescence-labeled phosphopeptide by two-fold. Fatty acids of different alkyl chain length were attached at the N-terminal of the linear peptide (HR)4 to improve the molecular transporter property. Addition of fatty acyl chains was expected to help with the permeation of the …

Regulations Of Pathogenic Cd4+ T Helper Lymphocytes In Inflammatory Diseases, Handong Zheng
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
In this comprehensive project, three interrelated studies with distinct foci were employed to understand the regulations of specific CD4+ T helper cell population in inflammatory diseases.
Pathogenic TH17 cells play an essential role in the initiation and development of both human multiple sclerosis (MS) and animal experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Nevertheless, the underlying mechanism by which the pathogenicity of TH17 cells is controlled in the autoimmune neuro-inflammation remains unclear. In aim 1, we revealed that lumican (Lum), an extracellular matrix (ECM) protein, negatively regulates encephalitic TH17 cell responses. Our findings highlighted a TH17 cell-intrinsic effect of Lum in suppressing …
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Analysis Of Behavioral Patterns And Treatment Barriers, Kimberly A. Knap
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Analysis Of Behavioral Patterns And Treatment Barriers, Kimberly A. Knap
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience difficulties with social communication and restrictive, repetitive, and stereotyped behavior patterns that place them at an increased risk for developing challenging behaviors that warrant early intervention (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). These problems are unlikely to decrease without intervention. Research indicates that parents’ involvement in behaviorally based interventions improves the functioning of children with ASD (Horner, Carr, Strain, Todd, & Reid, 2002). . Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (Eyberg & Funderburk, 2011) is an empirically supported intervention for young children with disruptive behaviors. PCIT shares similarities with numerous proven ASD treatments including caregiver involvement, structure …

The Hispanic population within the United States has grown to a considerable amount. The state of Florida’s population is 25% Hispanic, with projected estimates of this population continuing to grow in the coming years (Ortman & Shin, 2011). Statistics show that 28.3% of the state’s population, over the age of five, speak a language other than English at home. With this considerable number of Spanish-speakers comes the responsibility to adjust certain educational practices to best meet their needs. Literacy is an essential part of learning, and therefore assessing early literacy is an essential part to any child’s academic development.

Ability Of The Iso Predicted Heat Strain Method To Predict A Limiting Heat Stress Exposure, Edgar Prieto
Ability Of The Iso Predicted Heat Strain Method To Predict A Limiting Heat Stress Exposure, Edgar Prieto
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Heat stress is one of many physical agents to which thousands of workers are under constant exposure. Oftentimes it is necessary to work above the WBGT-based heat stress exposure limits. It is therefore important to consider alternative measures that include an exposure time limit to manage the heat stress. Predicted Heat Strain (PHS) (ISO7933) is one of those alternatives. PHS uses both personal factors like height and weight and job factors of environment, metabolic rate and clothing. The purpose of this project is to determine whether the PHS is an adequate method to predict short term exposure limits.
The project’s …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Within the current decade, the number of Hispanic students has doubled so that about 16% of the total student population within the United States are Spanish-speakers (U.S. Census Bureau, 2017). With this growing population comes a responsibility to understand and implement best practices for educating these students. Because literacy is a building-block for learning, one integral part of this responsibility consists of developing valid and reliable means of assessing pre-reading skills that are predictive of later reading abilities (Lonigan, Burgess, & Anthony, 2000; Wagner, Torgesen, & Rashotte, 1994).
English-language learning children are being identified for having reading difficulties and disabilities …

Particles In Welding Fumes, Rebecca T. Williams
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not differing base metals and filler wires used during welding processes contributed to differing amounts of ultrafine particles (UFP) and nanoparticles being emitted during the welding procedure. The study was also conducted to determine UFP and nanoparticle exposure in the breathing zones of the welders as well as the breathing zones of pipefitters and fire watchers, who commonly sit 6ft behind the welding arc. In order to determine if UFP and NP exposures differed with base metal and filler wire, all welding processes utilized the same welding machine for metal …

BACKGROUND: Evidence for the effectiveness of psychological treatments in low- and middle-income countries is increasing. However, there is a lack of systematic approaches to guide implementation in government health systems. The objective of this study was to address this gap by employing the Replicating Effective Programs (REP) framework to guide contextualization of a psychological treatment in the Uganda public health system for caregivers of children affected by nodding syndrome, a neuropsychiatric disorder endemic to Sub-Saharan Africa associated with high morbidity and disability.
METHODS: To contextualize a psychological treatment, we followed the four components of the REP framework: pre-conditions, pre-implementation, implementation, …

Restoration Of External Rotation Following Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty Without Latissimus Dorsi Transfer., Derek D Berglund, Samuel Rosas, Jacob J Triplet, Jennifer Kurowicki, Brandon Horn, Jonathan C Levy
Surgery Articles
BACKGROUND: Latissimus dorsi transfers have been considered necessary to restore active external rotation following reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA). The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of an RSA system that lateralizes the center of rotation in restoring active external rotation without a latissimus dorsi transfer in patients with a preoperative external rotation deficit (external rotation of < 0°).
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients who had undergone RSA with a lateralized center of rotation without a latissimus dorsi transfer. All patients had had a preoperative external rotation deficit (active external rotation of < 0°), and all were followed for a minimum of 2 years. Patients were stratified into 2 groups on the basis of the preoperative diagnosis: (1) those with a combined loss of active elevation and external rotation as a result of rotator cuff tear arthropathy (CLEER group) and (2) those with a combined loss of active elevation and external rotation as a result of other posttraumatic etiologies (non-CLEER group). The mean improvement of external rotation was analyzed. Subgroup analysis was performed on the basis of the Goutallier classification, glenosphere lateralization, and total prosthetic lateralization.
RESULTS: Thirty-three patients (24 in …

Oligomeric amyloid structures are crucial therapeutic targets in Alzheimer's and other amyloid diseases. However, these oligomers are too small to be resolved by standard light microscopy. We have developed a simple and versatile tool to image amyloid structures by using thioflavin T without the need for covalent labeling or immunostaining. The dynamic binding of single dye molecules generates photon bursts that are used for fluorophore localization on a nanometer scale. Thus, photobleaching cannot degrade image quality, allowing for extended observation times. Super‐resolution transient amyloid binding microscopy promises to directly image native amyloid by using standard probes and record amyloid dynamics …
Sexual Expression And Social Connectedness Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults, In The United States, Neal J. Blangiardo
Sexual Expression And Social Connectedness Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults, In The United States, Neal J. Blangiardo
Dissertations and Theses
Sexuality is a central aspect of human identity for all people, including older persons. Sexual expression continues across the lifespan, despite the cultural fallacy of the sexlessness of older adults. Older adults live active sexual lives which involve relationships, social roles, and an array of sexuality-related needs.
This dissertation examines the relationship between sexual expression and social connectedness, in older community-dwelling adults. Research on sexuality in this community predominately focuses on genital sexual expression, has not explored the non-genital dimension of sexual expression, and little is known about the role of social relationships that can play in supporting sexual expression. …

Virus particles protect genomes from hostile environments within and outside the host, eventually delivering these genomes to target tissues to initiate infection. Complex processes requiring significant energy and time are necessary to assemble these virus particles, but only a small portion of released virus will successfully infect new target cells (Fig 1A). While the science of virology has developed based on the isolation and purification of viral particles, it is becoming increasingly clear that direct cell-to-cell transmission of viruses and/or viral components is also highly relevant [1,2].
Direct cell-to-cell spread of infections has several advantages. The first is efficiency: genomic …

In recent year, there is a number of news in the mass media on violence in the school, including bullying. The high number of juvenile delinquency is the result of a lack of ability to control emotions in an acceptable way, causing the individual to easily engage the group's influence to perform negative behavior, including bullying behavior. From the above explanation, we interested to examine more deeply how the emotional maturity in adolescents bully in Junior High School 9 Banda Aceh. This study was done through quantitave method by using using the Emotional Maturity scale developed by Katkovsky and Gorlow. …

Prostate apoptosis response-4 (Par-4), a proapoptotic tumor suppressor protein, is downregulated in many cancers including renal cell carcinoma, glioblastoma, endometrial, and breast cancer. Par-4 induces apoptosis selectively in various types of cancer cells but not normal cells. We found that chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) cells from human patients and from Eµ-Tcl1 mice constitutively express Par-4 in greater amounts than normal B-1 or B-2 cells. Interestingly, knockdown of Par-4 in human CLL-derived Mec-1 cells results in a robust increase in p21/WAF1 expression and decreased growth due to delayed G1-to-S cell-cycle transition. Lack of Par-4 also increased the expression of p21 and …

Tanapox: A Potential Oncolytic Virus For The Treatment Of Cancer, Joel Marty
Honors Theses
The National Cancer Institute defines cancer as a group of related diseases characterized by unimpeded cell division with metastatic abilities. Cells frequently mutate and potentially become cancerous, but generally these cells are cleared by the immune system. The disease state of cancer arises when the mutated cells evade the immune clearance, which indicates medical intervention is required. Current therapies most commonly utilize chemotherapy, radiation, or a combination of the two, however, alternative therapies are being developed such as immunotherapies and oncolytic viruses (OVs). OVs cause a viral infection, clearing cancerous cells through viral replication mechanisms, such as viral cytolysis, while …

Healthcare Utilization & Health Behaviors Among Older Adults: The Role Of Insurance, Jennifer Rose Geiger
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
As the population of older adults in the U.S. continues its exponential growth, so too will the need for high-quality health and preventive services. Despite the widely acknowledged need for proactive solutions to the coming public health challenges for this rapidly expanding age cohort, healthcare providers and social work practitioners continue to lack the proper education training to serve the needs of older adults. Furthermore, these allied health professionals also frequently engage in ageist behaviors across care settings that also often employ institutionally ageist policies and procedures. As a result, older adults may be particularly at risk of negative health …

Prospective memory (PM) can deteriorate with age and adversely influence health behaviours. Research suggests that personality is related to PM in healthy young adults, but we know little about the role of personality in the PM amongst older adults. Community-dwelling older adults (N = 152) completed the NEO Five-Factor Inventory-3 and PM measures. After adjusting for demographics and general cognition, higher neuroticism and lower levels of openness were independently associated with lower objectively-measured time- and event-based PM. Lower conscientiousness was the only personality predictor of self-reported everyday PM failures. Findings indicate that personality plays a role in PM functioning in …

Collagen is the major component of extracellular matrix. Collagen cross-link and deposition depend on lysyl hydroxylation, which is catalyzed by procollagen-lysine, 2-oxoglutarate 5-dioxygenase (PLOD). Aberrant lysyl hydroxylation and collagen cross-link contributes to the progression of many collagen-related diseases, such as fibrosis and cancer. Three lysyl hydroxylases (LH1, LH2, and LH3) are identified, encoded by PLOD1, PLOD2, and PLOD3 genes. Expression of PLODs is regulated by multiple cytokines, transcription factors and microRNAs. Dysregulation of PLODs promotes cancer progression and metastasis, suggesting that targeting PLODs is potential strategy for cancer treatment. Here, we summarize the recent progress in the investigation of …

Dementia is the top global public health threat of the twenty first century. Within the dementia spectrum, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia that occurs with aging and accounts for about 60% - 80% of diagnosed cases. But currently available discoveries failed to develop disease-modifying therapies for all patients living with AD. Recent discoveries can only partially slow down cognitive decline in a small subset of patients with limited effectiveness. The heterogeneity and complexity of the pathophysiology of AD indicate that a single drug approach may not be sufficient to prevent disease onset and progression. Human …
