The Early Steps Project: Occupational Therapy In A Pediatric Primary Care Setting, Anne H. Zachry, J. Flick, P. Richey
Faculty Presentations
The purpose of this study is expand on the Early STEPs project goal of identifying early developmental delays in infants and young children in a health disparate population and to collect preliminary data to lay the groundwork for a future NIH grant proposal. Individuals with less education have poor health and shorter life expectancies than well-educated individuals, and research reveals that poverty is directly related to limited education. An innovative approach is needed to overcome barriers, improve health literacy, and educate parents on effective parenting strategies for this population. Technology may be the part of the solution to this issue. …

The VAD Journal
Background: Left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) are an increasingly used therapy for patients with advanced heart failure. Arrhythmias are common complications following LVAD implantation requiring admission, initiation, and escalation of medical therapy. Despite their frequent use in the treatment of arrhythmias, little has been reported regarding electrocardiographic changes, antiarrhythmic utilization, and outcomes post-LVAD.
Methods: A total of 309 patients who received a LVAD underwent retrospective chart review pre- and post-LVAD. Kaplan-Meier curves were calculated and compared using the log-rank test. Cox regression model was used for univariate analysis and those with a p

Teaching Links Between Epigenetics And Anesthesia To Anesthesia Providers, Bilanicz Slawomir
Teaching Links Between Epigenetics And Anesthesia To Anesthesia Providers, Bilanicz Slawomir
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Background
Epigenetics has been proposed as the epicenter of anesthesia research. The epigenetic landscape developed by Waddington reflects that human diversity is likely the result of a myriad of complex interactions between both intracellular and environmental environments, rather than a simple one-to-one protein coding of the genome. A gap in the literature identifies a need to better explore links between epigenetics and anesthesia. No formal educational program on this topic geared toward anesthesia providers was identified based on the comprehensive literature review completed.
Objectives
This study aimed to describe the knowledge of the anesthesia providers including Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists …

Are Independent Double-Checks Vital Prior To Safe Subcutaneous Insulin Administration?, Sarah Turecek
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
BACKGROUND: With the epidemic of diabetes mellitus projected to rise from 1 in 10 U.S. adults (year 2010) to 1 in 3 by the year 2050, there is a need for health care organizations to prepare nurses to manage the complexity of meeting the needs of patients with diabetes, especially in the timely administration of subcutaneous insulin. The traditionally accepted practice of double-checking subcutaneous insulin before administration, albeit non-evidence-based, poses a clinical problem by imposing an unnecessary demand on nurses’ workload, which places an obstacle to their timely administration of time-critical subcutaneous insulin.
PURPOSE: This project aimed to examine if …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Formation of dextrorphan (DXT) from dextromethorphan (DXM) has been widely used to assess cytochrome P450 2D (CYP2D) activity. Additionally, the kinetics of CYP2D activity have been well characterized in the liver microsomes. However, studies in brain microsomes are limited due to the lower microsomal content and abundance of CYP2D in the brain relative to the liver. In the present study, we developed a micro-scale enzymatic incubation method, coupled with a sensitive UPLC-MS/MS assay for the quantitation of the rate of DXT formation from DXM in brain microsomes. Rat brain microsomes were incubated with different concentrations of DXM for various times. …

Due to a changing employment arena, healthcare organizations are hiring more new graduate RNs into acute care units. MMC’s usual process is to put new hires into night shift. Historically, night shifts have less resource availability. These combined factors left staff feeling unsupported; patient care could be compromised when less support is available to those in the beginning of their careers.

Genome wide association (GWA) analysis of brain imaging phenotypes can advance our understanding of the genetic basis of normal and disorder-related variation in the brain. GWA approaches typically use linear mixed effect models to account for non-independence amongst subjects due to factors, such as family relatedness and population structure. The use of these models with high-dimensional imaging phenotypes presents enormous challenges in terms of computational intensity and the need to account multiple testing in both the imaging and genetic domain. Here we present a method that makes mixed models practical with high-dimensional traits by a combination of a transformation applied …
