Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus are important mosquito vectors for many infectious diseases. A number of factors affect the vector competence of these mosquitoes for a specific pathogen. The bacteria harbored in the midgut are known to influence mosquito physiology and can alter the response to various pathogens. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of abnormal physical characteristics for monitoring aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) contamination in commercial dairy concentrate feeds. The study was conducted during March to May 2013 using 82 dairy farms in Chiang Mai province, Thailand. All feed samples were collected from new packages and their physical characteristics were subsequently determined. AFB1 concentrations in the samples were measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and feed samples with AFB1 of more than 5 µg/Kg were determined as AFB1 contaminated samples. Comparative Effect Of Dl-Methionine And Dl-Methionine Hydroxy Analogue Supplemented Diet On Productive Performance, Fat Accumulation And Lipid Profile In Blood Of Meat-Type Ducks, Chanwit Kaewtapee, Chaiyapoom Bunchasak

The objective of this study was to compare the effect of DL-methionine (DLM) and DL-methionine hydroxy analogue (DL-MHA) supplementation on the growth performance, carcass quality, fat accumulation and lipid profile in blood of meat-type duck. Three hundred male Cherry Valley ducks were divided into 3 groups with 4 replications of 25 ducklings each. Each group was given a diet as follows: 1) basal diet, 2) basal diet + DLM, and 3) basal diet + DLMHA. The results show that dietary supplementation with DLM and DL-MHA increased body weight (P<0.01), feed intake (P<0.01) and pectoralis major (P<0.05), but decreased abdominal fat (P<0.01) when compared to the basal diet. Supplementation with DL-MHA also resulted in greater levels of triglycerides (P<0.05), low-density lipoprotein (P<0.05) and cholesterol (P<0.05) in the blood compared to the DLM group, in addition to greater levels of triglycerides (P<0.05) and high-density lipoprotein (P<0.05) compared to the basal diet. Furthermore, supplementation with DLM was shown to lower the level of plasma uric acid (P<0.05) compared to the basal diet. It is concluded that DL-MHA can promote the same productive performance in meat-type ducks as DLM, but the fat accumulation and lipid profile in blood was greater with the DL-MHA supplementation than with DLM. Furthermore, the underlying mechanism of different effects between DL-MHA and DLM on the lipid metabolism in ducks should be further investigated.

Canine colonic duplication is a rare congenital anomaly, usually symptomatic in the first year of life, with the common signs of bowel obstruction. Most importantly, colonic duplication in an adult dog has not been reported. This case document reports a non-communicating tubular colonic duplication with concurrent retroperitoneal mass in a 3- year-old female crossbred dog, presented for further diagnosis and treatment of the abdominal mass. A 10-year-old female Pomeranian dog was presented to the Small Animal Teaching Hospital, Chulalongkorn University, on December, 2018, with a history of anorexia, frequent vomiting, depress and oliguria. Physical examination revealed that the dog was depressed but responsive to the stimuli. The dog was dehydrated (7%) with pale-pink mucous membrane. The capillary refilling time of 1.5 seconds with strong femoral pulse were detected. An accumulating body of data indicates that EBV-infected cells release specific viral components in nano-vesicles called exosomes. Epstein-Barr virus encoded RNAs (EBER1 and EBER2) are two highly abundant, non-protein coding RNAs that are consistently expressed in all EBV latency programs. A 51-year-old white female presented with a painful ulcer of the left ventrolateral tongue. An incisional biopsy confirmed a diagnosis of adenosquamous carcinoma. The adenosquamous carcinoma is an uncommon malignant tumor with histopathological features of a squamous carcinoma and an adenocarcinoma. A definitive diagnosis requires histopathological examination of a deep biopsy involving the submucosal tissue. This malignant tumor shows aggressive behavior with early invasive growth and a poor prognosis. The histopathological findings and differential diagnosis of a case of adenosquamous carcinoma of the tongue are discussed.

Some studies have found acculturation to be a positive predictor of internalizing problems (i.e., anxiety and depression) in Latino youth (Gonzales et al., 2002), whereas other studies have revealed no relation or a negative relation between acculturation and internalizing problems (Smokowski, Buchanan, & Bacallao, 2009). Narrative reviews of this literature exist (Gonzales et al., 2002; Gonzales et al., 2009) but a quantitative synthesis of the literature has not been conducted. The present study (n = 335) attempted to conceptually replicate Hunt, Kim, Borgida, and Chaiken (2010) with a high-powered design to investigate whether values and self-interest differentially impact attitudes depending on psychological distance. Participants were assigned to complete a task that made self- or other-focused values more accessible, then indicated their attitudes about a student fee increase at a university to fund scholarships the participants would not be eligible to receive (thus going against their own financial self-interest for the well being of someone else). The research presented in this study examines concussion among athletes from the perspectives of prevention, assessment, and recovery. The first study examines concussion education for high school athletes by surveying 157 collegiate athletes, who primarily attended high school in Illinois and Indiana, about the previous concussion education, including whether they received mandated education, the methods and providers of education, and their ability to name a variety of concussion symptoms. This study finds that despite legislative mandates in these states, 20% of student-athletes continue to report not receiving concussion education in high school, with females more likely to report not receiving …

Dietary nitrate, found predominantly in green leafy vegetables and beetroot, is a precursor of nitric oxide. Under- or overproduction of nitric oxide is implicated in the etiology of several eye diseases. However, the potential influence of dietary nitrate intake on age-related macular degeneration (AMD) risk has not been assessed.

Objective

To investigate the temporal association between dietary nitrate intake (from both vegetable and nonvegetable sources) and the 15-year incidence of AMD, independent of potential confounders.

There are two main methods that are used to model the spread of an infectious disease: agent-based modelling and equation based modelling. In this paper, we compare the results from an example implementation of each method, and show that although the agent-based model takes longer to setup and run, it provides additional information that is not available when using an equation based model. Specifically, the ability of the agent-based model to capture heterogeneous mixing and agent interactions enables it to give a better overall view of an outbreak.
