Telehealth And Ehealth In Nurse Practitioner Training: Current Perspectives, Carolyn M. Rutledge, Karen Kott, Rebecca Poston, Christianne Fowler, Tina S. Haney

Telehealth is becoming a vital process for providing access to cost-effective quality care to patients at a distance. As such, it is important for nurse practitioners, often the primary providers for rural and disadvantaged populations, to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to utilize telehealth technologies in practice. In reviewing the literature, very little information was found on programs that addressed nurse practitioner training in telehealth. This article provides an overview of both the topics and the techniques that have been utilized for training nurse practitioners and nurse practitioner students in the delivery of care utilizing telehealth. Specifically, this …

Learning By Doing: The Md-Pa Interprofessional Education Rural Rotation, Ryan Palmer, Curt Stilp
Faculty Publications - College of Medical Science
While much investment has gone into developing interprofessional education (IPE) curriculum for healthcare professional students, many of these efforts have focused on classroom rather than clinical environments. Implementing robust IPE experiences into clinical training is often complicated by obstacles such as differing rotating schedules and differing curricular requirements. The Combined Medical-Physician Assistant Student Rural Rotation (Med-PARR) at the Oregon Health and Science University takes a practical approach to these challenges. Med-PARR students participate in focused IPE activities that overlay, or 'float', on top of each trainee's profession-specific curricular requirements. Through critical reflection, goal setting, and a community-based project, students get …

A Study Of Visible Tattoos In Entry -Level Dental Hygiene Education Programs, Kathryn R. Search, Susan L. Tolle, Gayle Mccombs, Aaron Arndt
Dental Hygiene Faculty Publications
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to survey entry-level dental hygiene program directors in the United States (US) to assess their perceptions of dental hygienists with visible tattoos as well as to determine current policies related to dress codes in US dental hygiene programs.
Methods: Data was collected with an online survey emailed to 340 dental hygiene program directors from March to April 2016, yielding a 43% (n = 141) response rate. Participants indicated their opinions of visible tattoos on the basis of professionalism and school policy requirements.
Results: Eighty percent of respondents reported their program …

Dr. Lancaster's diplomas are in the collection, as well as an oral history interview conducted in 1973 which tells, among other things, of his work to establish Western's first campus bookstore in the summer of 1921. The collection also includes the KMA and KAFP awards, as well as several other certificates and awards.
Physical Therapist Students’ Development Of Diagnostic Reasoning: A Longitudinal Study, Sarah Gilliland
Physical Therapist Students’ Development Of Diagnostic Reasoning: A Longitudinal Study, Sarah Gilliland
Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
Background and Purpose. Clinical reasoning is a complex problem-solving process that is necessary for effective clinical practice in physical therapy. Within the process of clinical reasoning, a physical therapist’s diagnostic reasoning should address the patient’s functional movement abilities and the impact of the patient’s condition on his or her ability to participate in life activities. This longitudinal study examined the development of entry-level physical therapist students’ diagnostic reasoning processes across time in their doctor of physical therapy education.
Methods. Qualitative methods were used to analyze participants’ diagnostic reasoning during a simulated patient case scenario. Six physical therapist students …
Occupational Therapy And Physiotherapy Education And Workforce In Anglophone Sub-Saharan Africa Countries, Augustine O. Agho, Emmanuel John
Occupational Therapy And Physiotherapy Education And Workforce In Anglophone Sub-Saharan Africa Countries, Augustine O. Agho, Emmanuel John
Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
Background: Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) countries are faced with the challenge of educating a critical mass of occupational therapists (OTs) and physiotherapists (PTs) to meet the growing demand for health and rehabilitation services. The World Federation of Occupational Therapy (WFOT) and World Confederation of Physical Therapy (WCPT) have argued for the need of graduate-level training for OTs and PTs for decades. However, very few studies have been conducted to determine the availability of OT and PT training programs and practitioners in SSA countries.
Methods: Initial data were collected and compiled from an extensive literature search conducted using MEDLINE and …

Contextualizing The Relevance Of Basic Sciences: Small-Group Simulation With Debrief For First- And Second-Year Medical Students In An Integrated Curriculum., S. B. Ginzburg, J. Brenner, M. Cassara, T. Kwiatkowski, J. M. Willey

There has been a call for increased integration of basic and clinical sciences during preclinical years of undergraduate medical education. Despite the recognition that clinical simulation is an effective pedagogical tool, little has been reported on its use to demonstrate the relevance of basic science principles to the practice of clinical medicine. We hypothesized that simulation with an integrated science and clinical debrief used with early learners would illustrate the importance of basic science principles in clinical diagnosis and management of patients.Small groups of first- and second-year medical students were engaged in a high-fidelity simulation followed by a comprehensive debrief …

A Guide To Common Skin Disorders While Pregnant, Debra Henline Sullivan, Virginia Sullivan
Walden Faculty and Staff Publications
During pregnancy, mothers strive to maintain good health and to promote the health of their babies. Having a chronic or acute skin condition during pregnancy could cause fear that treating these conditions could cause harm to their unborn child (American Academy of Dermatology [AAD], 2016). Women will need and seek guidance before and during their pregnancies as well as during lactation, when skin disorders affect them. The childbirth educator would benefit from a basic knowledge base to answer questions that may arise regarding various skin problems during the childbirth experience. This article will define and discuss treatment for some of …

The purpose of this study was to develop a single valid measure for assessing clinical teaching effectiveness within the field of physical therapy. Pilot testing with CIs from both universities were purposively sampled to complete the questionnaire. The CI databases yielded 1,001 potential respondents, recruited via e-mail. The questionnaire and two follow-up reminders were sent. Respondents consented by clicking a link which redirected them to the SurveyMonkey® questionnaire. Two hundred five CIs completed the questionnaire, a 20.5% response rate. The 205 respondents were mostly female (68.4%) with an average age of 40.54 years (SD=10.22). CI experience was distributed as follows: …
Professional Nursing Value Development In Nursing Students Who Participate In International Service Learning, Heather Ferrillo
Professional Nursing Value Development In Nursing Students Who Participate In International Service Learning, Heather Ferrillo
Nursing Faculty Publications
Background: International Service Learning (ISL) is becoming widely used in nursing education as a means to provide global learning opportunities. Concrete outcomes for these experiences have not been clearly supported in previous research. Determining if ISL experience facilitate the development of Professional Nursing Values (PNV) can support the use of ISL as a viable pedagogy. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine if there were a difference in PNV development in students who participate in ISL as part of their clinical experiences compared to those who do not. The hypothesis was that there was a difference in the …

Background: Job satisfaction and feelings of empowerment positively impact home health care nurses by improving patient safety and patient outcomes. The project objective determined whether an empowerment educational module improved the feelings of empowerment and job satisfaction of registered nurses at a home health care agency. Methods: A quantitative, pre-test/post-test research study was conducted to measure the success of an empowerment educational module. Laschinger’s (2008) Nursing Worklife questionnaire was administered to 92 participating nurses, 46 were assigned to an experimental group and 46 were assigned to a control group. Participants in the experimental group were queried about their perceptions towards …
