Impact Of Tranexamic Acid (Txa) On Hemoglobin Levels In Elective Total Knee Arthroplasty Patients, Gina Anderson-Malum

Nursing Posters

Over the last 2 years, the Bone and Joint Center has focused on blood utilization for total knee and total hip arthroplasty. With the use of a blood transfusion protocol, we significantly reduced blood transfusion rates and standardized the approach to care. As an expansion of this work, other ideas to further decrease blood utilization were considered. The purpose of the data collection of preoperative and postoperative Hemoglobin (HGB) levels was to evaluate the effect of Tranexamic Acid (TXA) on the average change in Hgb levels compared to Hgb levels of patients that did not receive the medication. In addition, …

Touro College of Pharmacy (New York) Publications and Research

The goal of the in vitro research was to evaluate the potential for inhibition of warfarin protein binding by tizoxanide. Warfarin was of particular interest for the present investigation because it has been shown to be highly bound to plasma proteins and is a narrow therapeutic index drug. Tizoxanide is an active metabolite of an anti-infective prodrug nitazoxanide and also highly protein-bound medication. Both drugs are expected to be co-administered clinically. Protein binding of warfarin was investigated using a centrifugal ultrafiltration technique. Co-administration of tizoxanide significantly inhibited protein binding of warfarin for all concentrations tested. Tizoxanide increased free fraction (fu) …

Meta-Analysis Of Social-Personality Psychological Research, Blair T. Johnson, Alice H. Eagly

CHIP Documents

This publication provides a contemporary treatment of the subject of meta-analysis in relation to social-personality psychology. Meta-analysis literally refers to the statistical pooling of the results of independent studies on a given subject, although in practice it refers as well to other steps of research synthesis, including defining the question under investigation, gathering all available research reports, coding of information about the studies and their effects, and interpretation/dissemination of results. Discussed as well are the hallmarks of high-quality meta-analyses.

Cell-Selective Knockout And 3d Confocal Image Analysis Reveals Separate Roles For Astrocyte- And Endothelial-Derived Ccl2 In Neuroinflammation, Debayon Paul, Shujun Ge, Yen Lemire, Evan R. Jellison, David R. Serwanski, Joel S. Pachter

UCHC Articles - Research

Background

Expression of chemokine CCL2 in the normal central nervous system (CNS) is nearly undetectable, but is significantly upregulated and drives neuroinflammation during experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model of multiple sclerosis which is considered a contributing factor in the human disease. As astrocytes and brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMEC) forming the blood–brain barrier (BBB) are sources of CCL2 in EAE and other neuroinflammatory conditions, it is unclear if one or both CCL2 pools are critical to disease and by what mechanism(s).

Methods

Mice with selective CCL2 gene knockout (KO) in astrocytes (Astro KO) or …

In a community sample of 1,581 pregnant women, 25% reported symptoms consistent with at least one of six syndromes, including PTSD, major depressive disorder (MDD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), or clinically significant dissociation, somatization, or affect dysregulation. Six sub-groups with distinct mental health problem profiles were identified by cluster analysis. Controlling for …

A Systems Biology Approach To Iron Metabolism, Reinhard C. Laubenbacher, Suzy V. Torti Jan 2014

A Systems Biology Approach To Iron Metabolism, Reinhard C. Laubenbacher, Suzy V. Torti

UCHC Articles - Research

Iron is critical to the survival of almost all living organisms. However, inappropriately low or high levels of iron are detrimental and contribute to a wide range of diseases. Recent advances in the study of iron metabolism have revealed multiple intricate pathways that are essential to the maintenance of iron homeostasis. Further, iron regulation involves processes at several scales, ranging from the subcellular to the organismal. This complexity makes a systems biology approach crucial, with its enabling technology of computational models based on a mathematical description of regulatory systems. Systems biology may represent a new strategy for understanding imbalances in …

Specific Localization Of Β-Arrestin2 In Myenteric Plexus Of Mouse Gastrointestinal Tract, Hercules T. Maguma, Dipanjana D. De, Sukhada Bhave, William L. Dewey, Hamid I. Akbarali Jan 2014

Specific Localization Of Β-Arrestin2 In Myenteric Plexus Of Mouse Gastrointestinal Tract, Hercules T. Maguma, Dipanjana D. De, Sukhada Bhave, William L. Dewey, Hamid I. Akbarali

Pharmacology and Toxicology Publications

Abstract

β-arrestin2 is a key molecule involved in signaling and internalization of activated G protein-coupled receptors including µ-opioid receptors (MOR). Previously we have shown that decreased expression of β-arrestin2 upon chronic morphine is associated with the development of opioid tolerance in the gastrointestinal tract. However, the localization of β-arrestin2 within the gastrointestinal wall is not known. In this study we found that β-arrestin2 is localized in the soma of a select group of neurons in the myenteric ganglia but not in smooth muscle. The density of β-arestin2 was significantly higher in the ileum than the colon. We identified four variants …

Activation Of Nlrp3 Inflammasomes Enhances Macrophage Lipid-Deposition And Migration: Implication Of A Novel Role Of Inflammasome In Atherogenesis, Xiang Li, Yang Zhang, Min Xia, Erich Gulbins, Krishna M. Boini, Pin-Lan Li Jan 2014

Activation Of Nlrp3 Inflammasomes Enhances Macrophage Lipid-Deposition And Migration: Implication Of A Novel Role Of Inflammasome In Atherogenesis, Xiang Li, Yang Zhang, Min Xia, Erich Gulbins, Krishna M. Boini, Pin-Lan Li

Pharmacology and Toxicology Publications

Although Nlrp3 inflammasome activation in macrophages has been shown to be critical for the development of atherosclerosis upon atherogenic stimuli, it remains unknown whether activated Nlrp3 inflammasomes by other non-atherogenic stimuli induce alterations in macrophages that may contribute in the concert with other factors to atherogenesis. Thus, the present study tested the hypothesis that activation of Nlrp3 inflammasomes by ATP, which is a classical non-lipid danger stimulus, enhances the migration of macrophage and increases lipids deposition in macrophages accelerating foam cell formation. We first demonstrated that extracellular ATP (2.5 mM) markedly increased the formation and activation of Nlrp3 inflammasomes in …

The Impact Of Prison Arts Programs On Inmate Attitudes And Behavior: A Quantitative Evaluation, Larry Brewster Jan 2014

The Impact Of Prison Arts Programs On Inmate Attitudes And Behavior: A Quantitative Evaluation, Larry Brewster

Public and Nonprofit Administration

California has been a leader in prison fine arts programs. Arts-in-Corrections, the granddaddy of them all, enjoyed a highly successful 30 year run until its closure in 2010 as a result of the state's budget crisis. This study evaluates three demonstration projects modeled after AIC, and prison theater programs offered through The Actors' Gang's Prison Project and Marin Shakespeare. Inmates from San Quentin, Soledad, New Folsom and CRC, Norco state prisons participated in the study. Pre-and Post surveys designed to measure changes in attitudes and behavior were administered at the start and finish of each 12-week arts program. The surveys …
