Student Growth Measures For Teacher And Principal Evaluations, Suzanne Franco, Allison Mueller

Celebration of Undergraduate & Graduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials

There were three Ohio research efforts about Student Growth Measures (SGM) for Teacher and Principal Evaluations: 1) extended testing for previously non-‐tested subjects and grades, 2) relationship between the teacher and principal evaluation systems’ implementation plans, and 3) an empirical study of Local Education Agencies’ (LEA) year-‐end evaluation data from 2013. In 2011-‐2012 Ohio offered a 2 year mini-‐grant to LEAs agreeing to administer extended testing for Value-‐Added measures (VAM) in grades and content areas not represented in the Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA). The mini-‐grant allowed the state to create testing pools sufficient to produce teacher-‐level VAMs. American College Testing …

Functional Genomics Annotation Of A Statistical Epistasis Network Associated With Bladder Cancer Susceptibility, Ting Hu, Qinxin Pan, Angeline S. Andrew, Jillian M. Langer, Michael D. Cole, Craig R. Tomlinson, Margaret R. Karagas, Jason H. Moore

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: Several different genetic and environmental factors have been identified as independent risk factors for bladder cancer in population-based studies. Recent studies have turned to understanding the role of gene-gene and gene-environment interactions in determining risk. We previously developed the bioinformatics framework of statistical epistasis networks (SEN) to characterize the global structure of interacting genetic factors associated with a particular disease or clinical outcome. By applying SEN to a population-based study of bladder cancer among Caucasians in New Hampshire, we were able to identify a set of connected genetic factors with strong and significant interaction effects on bladder cancer susceptibility. …

Factors That Influence Student Selection Of Educational Leadership Master’S Programs At Regional Universities, Pam Winn, Lesley F. Leach, Susan Erwin, Liza Benedict

Administrative Issues Journal

Graduate enrollment numbers in Educational Leadership programs have dwindled at many public higher education institutions. At the same time, for-profit institutions and institutions with private marketing partnerships have experienced increasingly greater enrollments. Many public institutions are reevaluating their marketing and recruiting strategies as they struggle to compete for students. Central to any marketing strategy is knowledge of the needs and wants of consumers; in the case of higher education, the consumers are students. This study sought to determine the needs and wants of Master’s-level Educational Leadership students by investigating the factors that influenced students’ selections of programs as well as …

Depression And Social Support In Families Raising A Child With A Disability/Chronic Condition, Shannon Mcomber Apr 2014

Depression And Social Support In Families Raising A Child With A Disability/Chronic Condition, Shannon Mcomber

Journal of Undergraduate Research

An estimated 4 million children in the United States have a disability (Disability Statistic Center). How families adapt to the situation of raising a CWD may be related to a number of factors including the parents’ level and type of social support. Clearly, social support serves as an important resource to couples and families raising typically developing children; however, it may be an especially important resource for families who are raising a CWD. Since there is minimal literature examining this topic, and rarely are fathers’ perceptions of social support measured, one purpose of this study was to examine mothers’ and …

The Use Of Social Support Groups With Women Suffering From Postpartum Depression: Centeringpregnancy Model, Sarah Passey, Dr. Ana Birkhead Apr 2014

The Use Of Social Support Groups With Women Suffering From Postpartum Depression: Centeringpregnancy Model, Sarah Passey, Dr. Ana Birkhead

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a subtype of major depression affecting 10-20% of new mothers around the world, with onset within 6 months after childbirth (Norman, Sherburn, Osborne, & Galea, 2010; Xie, He, Koszycki, Walker, & Wen, 2009). “It is a serious problem that affects a woman’s health and well-being, marital relationship, as well as the offspring’s health and wellbeing” (Xie et al., 2009, p.1). The mother’s feelings of hopelessness can lead to isolation and a lack of maternal/infant bonding and attachment. It is believed that the duration of this debilitating depression is determined, in part, by the accessibility of support …

Charge Nurse Levels Of Stress: A Baseline Assessment, Arielle Muffler, Dr. Katreena Merrill Apr 2014

Charge Nurse Levels Of Stress: A Baseline Assessment, Arielle Muffler, Dr. Katreena Merrill

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When I first heard about Dr. Merrill’s interest in leadership styles and impact of stress, I was intrigued with the idea of how stress can greatly influence a working and healing environment. Due to personal experiences working under various healthcare leaders, I could attest to how a stressed boss could make work and the healing environment very unpleasant and negative. While conducting a literature review, I discovered that there is an increasing burnout rate and nursing shortage and that many hospital employers are interested in reducing stressors—especially for the charge nurses (Ilhan, Durukan, Taner, Maral, and Bumin, 2007). These charge …

Effective Leadership Qualities In Nursing Clinical Instructors, Elizabeth Gubler, Dr. Del La Cruz Apr 2014

Effective Leadership Qualities In Nursing Clinical Instructors, Elizabeth Gubler, Dr. Del La Cruz

Journal of Undergraduate Research

During the 20th century clinical nursing education underwent a drastic change. It shifted from apprentice training to faculty training, making it the responsibility of the teacher to promote learning in the clinical setting (Tang, Chou, & Chiang, 2005). Faculty have a profound influence on students’ feelings of success or failure in the clinical setting (Davidhizar & McBride, 1985), and have been proven to ‘make or break’ the practical experience (Cahill, 1996).

Mucins have been associated with survival in various cancer patients, but there have been no studies of mucins in small bowel carcinoma (SBC). In this study, we investigated the relationships between mucin expression and clinicopathologic factors in 60 SBC cases, in which expression profiles of MUC1, MUC2, MUC3, MUC4, MUC5AC, MUC6 and MUC16 in cancer and normal tissues were examined by immunohistochemistry. MUC1, MUC5AC and MUC16 expression was increased in SBC lesions compared to the normal epithelium, and expression of these mucins was related to clinicopathologic factors, as follows: MUC1 [tumor location (p = 0.019), depth (p = 0.017) and …

Students’ Perceptions Of Learning Outcomes Throughout Simulation Experience, Brandon Lewis, Dr. Patricia Ravert Apr 2014

Students’ Perceptions Of Learning Outcomes Throughout Simulation Experience, Brandon Lewis, Dr. Patricia Ravert

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The use of human patient simulation (HPS) is needed more than ever in nursing curriculum today (Bambini, Washburn, & Perkins, 2009). One reason is that it allows students to practice critical thinking and decision-making skills in a safe environment (Howard, Ross, Mitchell, & Nelson, 2010; Medley & Horne, 2005). HPS also creates situations where other learning outcomes, such as communication, teamwork, a better understanding of classroom material, and improved psychomotor skills, are achieved (Bambini et al., 2009; McGaghie, Issenberg, Petrusa, & Scalese, 2006).
