Health Hazards In Rental Housing: An Overview Of Clark County, Nevada, Amanda Nicole Sokolowsky May 2014

Health Hazards In Rental Housing: An Overview Of Clark County, Nevada, Amanda Nicole Sokolowsky

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

A wide range of health conditions are associated with housing conditions, including asthma, respiratory infections, injuries, mental health issues, and lead poisoning. People in modern societies spend more than 90% of their time indoors, the vast majority of which is spent at home. Therefore, any new information on housing related health hazards in a population provides an opportunity for a new prevention program. Reports have shown that rental properties have more health related hazards than owner occupied housing, and rental properties are frequently occupied by low-income and minority individuals. This descriptive study intended to provide an overview of housing related …

The Triad Trial: Online Education For Coaches On The Prevention Of The Female Athlete Triad, Megan Jane Ostler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

High school coaches play a huge role in establishing a healthy environment for their athletes and often students. The coach‐athlete relationship has proven to be a strong and useful bond in prevention of adverse behaviors of athletes or in prevention of health problems such as concussions. The female athlete triad (triad) is a common health problem among female athletes. Many high school coaches are unaware of the triad or the serious health and performance consequences for their athletes. The triad is a syndrome marked by 3 interrelated adverse effects: decreased energy availability, menstrual dysfunction, and decreased bone mineral density.

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Brachytherapy, a radiotherapy technique for treating prostate cancer, involves the implantation of numerous radioactive seeds into the prostate. While the implanted seeds can be easily identified on a CT image, distinguishing the prostate and surrounding soft tissues is not as straightforward. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) offers superior anatomical delineation, but the seeds appear as dark voids and are difficult to identify, thus creating a conundrum. Cobalt dichloride-N-acetylcysteine (C4) has previously been shown to be promising as an encapsulated contrast agent marker. We performed spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) and spin-spin relaxation time (T2) measurements of C4 solutions with varying cobalt dichloride …

Fetal Heart Monitoring, Nursing Surveillance, And Cesarean Birth, María Del Carmen Colombo Phd May 2014

Fetal Heart Monitoring, Nursing Surveillance, And Cesarean Birth, María Del Carmen Colombo Phd

Dissertations

Purpose: Birth by cesarean delivery is a major public health issue with nearly one in three births delivered by cesarean section. Cesarean birth may be necessary to save mother or baby, but the rapid rise since 1996 without concomitant reduction in maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality may indicate this mode of delivery may be over utilized. Cesarean births pose significant maternal and newborn health risks. Identification of factors that may contribute to reduction in the first cesarean birth in low-risk women who are nulliparous, term gestation, with single fetus in head down position (NTSV) is a health priority. The …

Gestational Weight Gain Patterns, Hope R. Farquharson Phd May 2014

Gestational Weight Gain Patterns, Hope R. Farquharson Phd

Dissertations

Background: Managing gestational weight gain (GWG) remains a global health priority as obesity among women of childbearing age and their children have been linked to excessive GWG. Excessive GWG has been linked to increased rates of cesarean sections, preterm births, hypertensive disorders, gestational diabetes, large for gestational age newborns, postpartum weight retention, long-term obesity for the woman and her children. Conversely, adverse outcomes resulting from weight gain below recommendation could potentially include preterm births, increased rates of neonatal intensive care admission, and newborn morbidity and mortality. Previous studies indicate the need for healthcare providers to help women gain within the …

Delirium Rate And Risk Factors In Palliative Care Outpatients And Caregiver Coping Strategies, Sarah Deur Livermore Phd, Fnp May 2014

Delirium Rate And Risk Factors In Palliative Care Outpatients And Caregiver Coping Strategies, Sarah Deur Livermore Phd, Fnp

Dissertations

Background: Delirium causes suffering and in terminal illness undermines important goals to die at home. Improved knowledge about delirium among palliative outpatients can lead to improved patient outcomes through early identification and treatment in the home. Conversely, a missed diagnosis leads to costly hospital admissions, and is the most common reason to seek long-term care placement (Breitbart & Alici, 2008). Medicare stresses the importance by listing it as a common cause of falls among non-reimbursed hospital events. Prior evaluation of outpatient delirium rate was 14% among demented community dwelling elders (Steis, Evans, et al., 2012a). It is hypothesized that frail, …

Is Combat Exposure Predictive Of Higher Preoperative Stress In Military Members?, Eric J. Bopp Phd May 2014

Is Combat Exposure Predictive Of Higher Preoperative Stress In Military Members?, Eric J. Bopp Phd

Dissertations

Since September 11, 2001, the United States has been engaged in large-scale combat operations exposing numerous military service members to stressful, traumatic, and threatening environments. As a result, many of these individuals have experienced significant psychological problems, such as anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as physiological alterations, such as cardiovascular changes and neuroendocrine disturbances. The preoperative experience may be perceived as stressful, often increasing in magnitude as the patient progresses through the preoperative period. Military anesthesia providers frequently provide anesthetic care to military members with a history of combat exposure. Anecdotally, it is not uncommon for …

Molecular Characterization Of Glioblastoma Cancer Stem Cells, Jo Meagan Garner May 2014

Molecular Characterization Of Glioblastoma Cancer Stem Cells, Jo Meagan Garner

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Malignant gliomas are locally aggressive, highly vascular tumors that have an overall survival time less than 14 months, and current therapies provide little improvement in the disease course and outcome. While glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) patients present uniform histological phenotypes, the molecular determinants of the disease vary considerably between individual cases resulting in complicated prognosis. The heterogeneity, aggressiveness and rapid tumor relapse of GBM is believed to be sustained by cancer stem-like cell populations that are able to initiate and maintain tumors. Although CSCs represent only a small fraction of cells within a tumor, their high tumor-initiating capacity and therapeutic resistance …

Preliminary Study On How Tumor Suppressor Nf2 Inhibits Transcriptional Coactivators Yap/Taz In The Developing Mouse Brain, Yu He May 2014

Preliminary Study On How Tumor Suppressor Nf2 Inhibits Transcriptional Coactivators Yap/Taz In The Developing Mouse Brain, Yu He

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Normal brain development requires precise coordination of neural progenitor proliferation and differentiation, the mechanism of which is not well known. Recently the tumor suppressor neurofibromatosis 2 (Nf2) was shown to regulate the balance of neural progenitor proliferation and differentiation in the developing mouse brain through the Hippo pathway effectors, transcriptional coactivators Yap/Taz. The molecular mechanism of how Nf2 regulates Yap/Taz is not understood. Here I showed that Nf2 regulated the Yap/Taz activity by decreasing the stability of Yap/Taz. The regulation was independent of Yap-S366 phosphorylation, which is required for Yap degradation. I also showed that Nf2 did not regulate Lats1/2 …

Persistant Gata2 Expression Promotes Self-Renewal Of Myeloid Progenitors And Blocks Lymphoid Differentiation., Satish Kumar Nandakumar May 2014

Persistant Gata2 Expression Promotes Self-Renewal Of Myeloid Progenitors And Blocks Lymphoid Differentiation., Satish Kumar Nandakumar

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

The transcription factor GATA2 is highly expressed in hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and is downregulated during differentiation. Overexpression of GATA2 is frequently observed in acute myeloid leukemia. In previous studies, enforced expression of GATA2 using a MSCV GATA2 retroviral vector blocked differentiation of HSC and progenitors without inducing leukemia. We hypothesized that a lower dose of GATA2 can relieve the HSC block and eventually transform myeloid progenitors into leukemia stem cells. To test this hypothesis we generated a MSCV GATA2-ERT vector in which nuclear concentration of GATA2 can be regulated by Tamoxifen (TAM). The GATA2-ERT protein was confirmed to leak …

Characterization Of Cre Mouse Models To Target Cns Barriers For Generating Conditional Knockouts Of Abc Transporters, Rachel L. Scheib May 2014

Characterization Of Cre Mouse Models To Target Cns Barriers For Generating Conditional Knockouts Of Abc Transporters, Rachel L. Scheib

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

The central nervous system (CNS) includes the brain and spinal cord, where both possess a blood to brain and a blood to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barrier. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) and blood-CSF barrier (BCSFB) regulate the passage of many molecules to maintain and protect these sensitive organs from harmful xenobiotics (i.e. drugs, pollutants, etc.) or physiologic changes (i.e. glucose, ion, or water composition). These barriers also express ABC transporters, including P-glycoprotein (Pgp) and breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP), which are known to contribute to efflux of endogenous toxins and therapeutics from the CNS. Pgp and BCRP expression and activity are …

Predictors And Mediators Of Long-Term Functional Limitations In The Older Adult Population, Teresa Maria Bell May 2014

Predictors And Mediators Of Long-Term Functional Limitations In The Older Adult Population, Teresa Maria Bell

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

With nearly 40 million Americans being treated for nonfatal injuries in emergency departments annually, the burden of nonfatal injury in the United States is extensive. The longterm functional consequences of these injuries can be enduring and far-reaching, especially for older adults. Although studies have reported that persistent functional deficits exist after injury, less information is known about long-term recovery patterns and the factors that influence functional outcomes.

The primary aims of this study are to (1) classify differences in long-term, longitudinal changes in functional limitations within the injured population, (2) identify individual characteristics that predict recovery after injury and (3) …

Glioma: A Tale Of Corticosteroids, Thiopurines And Proposed Novel Antiglioma Small Molecules, Amira Ahmed

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Glioma is a brain tumor that arises from glial cells or glial progenitor cells, and represents 80% of malignant brain tumor incidence in the United States. Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive primary brain tumor malignancy with fewer than 8% of patients with GBM surviving for 3 years. Over the past 10 years, despite improvement in diagnosis and therapies for cancer, the survival rate for high-grade glioma patients remains unchanged. The main focus of this dissertation is to investigate two therapeutic agents that are related to increase tumor resistance or increase secondary tumor incidence, which might play a role …

Adenosine Production Is Essential For Closing The Critical Period Of Cortical Plasticity, Rachel A. Chassan May 2014

Adenosine Production Is Essential For Closing The Critical Period Of Cortical Plasticity, Rachel A. Chassan

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Sensory inputs from the external world are represented as highly organized systems in the adult brain for effective adaptation to the environment. At the cortical level, this organization is referred to as cortical maps. The establishment of cortical maps begins with early life experiences during the critical period, a brief period during development of heightened sensitivity to sensory stimuli. During this time, organization of cortical maps is plastic and highly subject to change through passive sensory experience. As an animal matures, the critical period closes and changes to cortical maps occur less freely. The cellular mechanisms of cortical map plasticity …

Efficacy Of Mantram Repetition Program On Sleep In Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Lindsay Cosco Holt Phd

Dissertations

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affects over seven million (3.5%) of the US adult population. In 2011, 476,515 veterans were currently seeking treatment for PTSD. Statistics show that 87% of veterans with PTSD report sleep disturbances and 52% experience frequent nightmares, making sleep the second most common reason why veterans seek mental health care upon return from deployment (Germain et al., 2006). Studies have sought to find a link between PTSD and sleep, and the importance of sleep in the recovery process, but there is a gap in the research on sleep disturbances and interventions for improvement in veterans with PTSD. …

Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D, Calcium, And Calcium-Regulating Hormones In Preeclamptics And Controls During First Day Postpartum, Ahmed Dalmar, Hershel Raff, Suneet P. Chauhan, Maharaj Singh, Danish S. Siddiqui

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

The evidence for a link between vitamin D and preeclampsia is conflicting. There is a paucity of studies reporting simultaneous 25-hydroxyvitamin D (inactive form) and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (biologically active form). We investigated if levels of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, calcium-regulating hormones (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, parathyroid hormone), and calcium differ significantly between preeclamptics and controls. On postpartum day one, 98 subjects (44 with preeclampsia, 54 controls) were recruited among women admitted to the postdelivery unit, and their serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, parathyroid hormone, serum calcium, and serum albumin levels were prospectively measured. The majority of participants (70 %) had serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D …
