Education For Pediatric Oncology Nurses On Fertility Preservation Of Pediatric Oncology Patients, Elyse Breit
Education For Pediatric Oncology Nurses On Fertility Preservation Of Pediatric Oncology Patients, Elyse Breit
HIM 1990-2015
Although the survival rate of childhood cancer is high, nearly two thirds of these survivors experience negative long-term secondary side effects from cancer treatments. Infertility is one such side effect that can have a prominent impact on quality of life as the patient ages. It is important for nurses working with pediatric oncology patients to provide the patient and family with education about risk for infertility and fertility preservation (FP) in order to allow families to make decisions about FP before cancer treatment starts. However, pediatric oncology nurses report being uneducated about FP guidelines and are hesitant to broach this …
Interventions For Childhood Obesity: Evaluating Technological Applications Targeting Physical Activity Level And Diet, Jessica Dipietro
Interventions For Childhood Obesity: Evaluating Technological Applications Targeting Physical Activity Level And Diet, Jessica Dipietro
HIM 1990-2015
Overweight and obese children have increased risks for multiple preventable diseases and conditions which can impair their physiological health and significantly increases the overall cost of their healthcare. Free mobile applications and technology for weight loss, dietary tracking, and physical activity may be quite useful for monitoring nutritional intake and exercise to facilitate weight loss. If so, nurses are well positioned to recommend such tools as part of their efforts to prevent childhood obesity and help children and parents better manage childhood obesity when it is present. However, there are no guidelines that nurses can use to determine what applications …
Exploring The Vicious Cycle Of Pediatric Asthma And Anxiety, Taylor Irwin
Exploring The Vicious Cycle Of Pediatric Asthma And Anxiety, Taylor Irwin
HIM 1990-2015
Asthma is the most common chronic disease of childhood. Children diagnosed with asthma are twice as likely to have a comorbid anxiety disorder as their non-asthmatic peers. The presence of both asthma and anxiety in the pediatric patient creates an environment of poor asthma control, and places them at risk for a variety of negative health events. Little is known about comorbid anxiety’s role in asthma health maintenance. Research has identified the link between these two conditions but causation is difficult to conclude. The aim of this thesis is to assess the current state of the science regarding pediatric asthma …

Use Of Complementary And Alternative Therapies: A Pilot Survey, Hector Ortiz-Cintron
HIM 1990-2015
Meeting patient expectations in relation to pain management is an essential component of palliative and end-of-life care. However, previous research has demonstrated that pain is highly prevalent, especially during the four months prior to death. Poorly controlled pain contributes to cognitive failure, depression and an inability to complete daily activities. Unfortunately, pain and symptom management are often inadequate for patients placed in hospice care. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the perspectives of hospice nurses on complementary and alternative therapies to determine if there is an educational need in order to aide in the management of chronic pain …
Addressing Need For Research-Focused Nurses By Increasing Interest And Socialization At The Undergraduate Level, Sarah Thomas
Addressing Need For Research-Focused Nurses By Increasing Interest And Socialization At The Undergraduate Level, Sarah Thomas
HIM 1990-2015
The U.S. shortage of qualified nursing teachers and researchers is affecting national health care outcomes. Methods such as fast-tracking Baccalaureate nurses into graduate programs and embedding leadership development early into nursing curricula have been proposed to address faculty and research shortages. Early interest in nursing research careers increases likelihood of enrollment in graduate education. One way undergraduate nursing students may develop an interest in research careers is through a mentored apprenticeship with research-active faculty. In this thesis, the author uses an autoethnography methodology to examine the benefits that a mentored research apprenticeship model brought to her undergraduate experience. Her experience …
Racial Disparities In Adherence To Cardiovascular Medications Among The Elderly In Medicare: Three Empirical Essays, Mustafa Hussein Muhammad Hussein
Racial Disparities In Adherence To Cardiovascular Medications Among The Elderly In Medicare: Three Empirical Essays, Mustafa Hussein Muhammad Hussein
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
This dissertation sought to explore the relatively understudied area of racial disparities in adherence to cardiovascular medication regimens among the elderly. Black and Hispanic seniors are well documented to have lower rates of adherence to their prescribed cardiovascular medications, relative to their white counterparts. This disproportionately lower adherence places these minority groups at higher risk for worse cardiovascular prognosis and premature cardiovascular death. The Medicare Program, which covers healthcare predominantly for elderly Americans, offers an interesting laboratory to study these disparities and their response to policy changes. Using nationally representative data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey on white, black, …
Interactions Between Human Neutrophils And Mycobacterium Smegmatis : A Comparative General Analysis., Irina Miralda
Interactions Between Human Neutrophils And Mycobacterium Smegmatis : A Comparative General Analysis., Irina Miralda
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
Mycobacteria smegmatis is an abundant soil and water inhabitant with which humans are continuously in contact. Despite the fact that it is typically considered non-‐pathogenic, a few rare cases of M. smegmatis-‐caused infections have been reported and it has been shown that M. smegmatis is able to modulate inflammatory responses in macrophages. Neutrophils are the innate immune system’s first line of centralized defense against invading microbes, especially the frequently encountered M. smegmatis. However, very little information is known of the mechanism by which neutrophils eliminate environmental bacteria. In this study, the hypothesis that M. smegmatis regulates neutrophil functional responses, and …

Food Intake Of Hospitalized Older Adults After Exposure To Volunteer Feeding Program, Rebekah Grace Presley
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Context: Malnutrition proves to be a significant issue for hospitalized older adults. The number of physiological, social, and psychological problems they experience increases their risk for malnourishment, only worsening their admitting diagnoses. Research shows that social interaction is crucial to food intake. Many geriatric patients do not receive the interaction or encouragement they need while they eat. A hospital in Northwest Arkansas desired to prevent this negative cycle by implementing a volunteer program assisting older adults during meals. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate this type of program for its effectiveness, determining if food intake increases with …

Is Chlorhexidine An Effective Antiseptic To Prevent Clabsi For Picc Line Maintenance In The Neonatal Population?, Lauren Blankenship
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Central venous catheters (CVCs) are inserted in order to administer fluids and medications. A peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) is a type of CVC. While beneficial, central line associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) is a risk for patients having a CVC inserted. Antiseptics are used for skin preparation when inserting a central line to prevent infection and during maintenance of the central line. Currently, the Center for Disease Control recommends the use of chlorhexidine for central venous catheter insertion in patients two months of age or older. Studies have found reduced CLABSI rates with the use of chlorhexidine for CVC insertion …

Eeg Measurement Of Neural Oscillations At High And Low Frequencies Across Languages, Lauren Nicole Stewart
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
The comprehension and understanding of language depends upon two critical things: first, the acoustic integrity of the linguistic signal that is sent and received as well as the knowledge of the phonology and meaning that is in a given language. However, little is known about how brain rhythms that track these properties involved in comprehension and understanding. A 14 channel telemetric headset measuring electroencephalography (EEG) was used in this study to track the brain’s response at both high (30-50Hz) and low frequencies (3-30Hz) while language samples at varying levels of intelligibility were presented to a native Spanish speaker under the …

Due to her persistent increased blood pressure she was advised urinary vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) and its level was raised. MRI of the abdomen showed a well-circumcised lesion in the right adrenal of 3.0×2.5 cm suggestive of pheochromocytoma. The patient was started on antihypertensives including α-blockers and β-blockers and planned for right open adrenalectomy. Intraoperatively, blood pressure was raised up to 180/110 mm Hg on slight manipulation of adrenal gland which was controlled with glyceryl-trinitrate and volatile agents. …
Cyclic Nucleotide-Dependent Phosphorylation Regulates Bk-Ca Channel Activity In Human Coronary Artery Smooth Muscle Cells, Raeonda Williams
Cyclic Nucleotide-Dependent Phosphorylation Regulates Bk-Ca Channel Activity In Human Coronary Artery Smooth Muscle Cells, Raeonda Williams
PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) can induce dysfunction in organ systems by attenuating normal blood flow. Gonadal steroids are vasoactive hormones, but their role in contributing to cardiovascular function remains controversial. We have demonstrated that gonadal steroids can relax coronary arteries by opening the large-conductance, calcium- and voltage-activated potassium (BKca) channel in smooth muscle cells by increasing cyclic nucleotide levels; however, the signaling pathways involved remain to be elucidated. The purpose of this study was to identify how phosphorylation (via cAMP- and cGMP-dependent protein kinases) I dephosphorylation (via phosphoprotein phosphatase 2A, PP2A) regulates BKca channel activity in human coronary artery smooth muscle …
