Comprehensive Cancer Care: An Outpatient Treatment Facility, Braden Abrams Reid
Comprehensive Cancer Care: An Outpatient Treatment Facility, Braden Abrams Reid
All Theses
A cancer diagnosis can result in a loss of decision-making and control for patients. The majority of clinical treatments fail to adequately address corollary symptoms and needs that arise both from treatment and from the disease itself. Thus, the architectural problem identified in this thesis inquiry is how can an outpatient cancer centre treat the whole patient comprehensively, while at the same time instilling control and re-empowering the patient? This thesis project proposes a patient-centered environment designed to support the myriad and nuanced needs of the cancer patient, as well as a site-specific proposal for a comprehensive outpatient cancer treatment …
Big Pharma And Big Medicine In The Global Environment, Anne E. Figert, Susan E. Bell
Big Pharma And Big Medicine In The Global Environment, Anne E. Figert, Susan E. Bell
Sociology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
In previous work we argued that sociologists need to expand our thinking about pharmaceuticalization, the process of understanding and/or treating social, behavioral, or bodily conditions with pharmaceuticals. The majority of sociological scholarship has investigated pharmaceuticalization as a primarily Western process and conceptualized it in modern terms (Bell and Figert 2010, 2012a, 2012b). In our view, the work of anthropologists and science and technology studies (STS) scholars who decenter the West as the starting point for research opens up new avenues for understanding the global dynamics of pharmaceuticalization. We have also argued in favor of adopting a postmodern theoretical lens which …
Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Explain Physical Activity Among College Students, Ese B. Aghenta
Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Explain Physical Activity Among College Students, Ese B. Aghenta
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The health benefits of physical activity include improved cardiovascular health, reduced rates of diabetes and other metabolic diseases, weight maintenance and improved bone and mental health (United States Department Health & Human Services (2008). According to the American College Health Association National College Health Assessment (ACHA-NCHA, 2013), only 20.0% of college students in the United States meet this recommendation. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) attempts to explain the intention to perform behaviors that are not under an individual’s complete volitional control and has been highly utilized in predicting intention and performance of physical activity (Courneya, Nigg & Estabrooks, 1998). …

Effects Of Jump Training On Bone Mineral Density In Young Adult Females, Battogtokh Zagdsuren
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Physical activity is critical to bone health. However, not all physical activity has optimum effect on bone health and metabolism. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a short term progressive jumping protocol on bone mineral density in college age Asian females. Sixteen participants aged18-28 years enrolled in the study. Participants were assigned to exercise (n=9) and control (n=8) groups. The exercise group completed a two-legged depth jump from an approximate 20cm stepbench followed immediately by a maximum vertical jump using arm swings for five days per week for two weeks. Each depth jump and vertical …
An Evaluation Of The East Indianapolis Food Desert, Angelina Qin
An Evaluation Of The East Indianapolis Food Desert, Angelina Qin
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The Indy East Food Desert (IEFD) appears to suffer from many common conditions noted by various scholars as food desert identifiers. Yet, its situation still remains unique. Though there is a prevalence of minority populations, low-income households, and low-education attainment levels, there are also factors of low-access, poor food options (within the limited food outlets in the neighborhoods), and poor eating habits which shape the situation of the community. In an attempt to alleviate the food desert problems, the Indy East Food Desert Coalition (IEFDC) was formed. IEFDC partnered with Butler University's Center for Urban Ecology in order to assess …

Pediatrics Faculty Publications
Invasive fungal infections are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in children. Successful management of these systemic infections requires identification of the causative pathogen, appropriate antifungal selection, and optimisation of its pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties to maximise its antifungal activity and minimise toxicity and the emergence of resistance. This review highlights salient scientific advancements in paediatric antifungal pharmacotherapies and focuses on pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies that underpin current clinical decision making. Four classes of drugs are widely used in the treatment of invasive fungal infections in children, including the polyenes, triazoles, pyrimidine analogues and echinocandins. Several lipidic formulations of …

Background: Perceived control has been suggested as a modifiable factor associated with health-related quality of life (HRQOL). However, the relationship between perceived control and HRQOL has not been evaluated in patients with heart failure (HF). The purpose of this study was to determine whether perceived control independently predicts HRQOL in HF patients. Methods: A total of 423 HF patients were included. Hierarchical linear regression was performed to determine the independent association of perceived control to HRQOL after controlling for covariates. Results: Higher levels of perceived control were associated with better HRQOL in univariate analysis. However, this relationship was strongly attenuated …

G-Protein Coupled Estrogen Receptor Regulation Of Migration And Metastasis In The Breast, Sara Nicole Alcon
G-Protein Coupled Estrogen Receptor Regulation Of Migration And Metastasis In The Breast, Sara Nicole Alcon
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Proliferation and migration are critical steps within normal mammary development and breast cancer progression. While 17β-estradiol (E2) stimulates proliferation in normal and breast cancer cells through estrogen receptor-α (ERα) and G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor-1 (GPER) [1-3], GPER regulation of E2-dependent migration has not been fully examined. GPER upregulates pathways necessary for increased migration, including vimentin, matrix metalloproteinase-9, and mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling [1, 4-6]. GPER may also increase phospho-focal adhesion kinase (p-FAK) through Src activation [7, 8]. As a tumor develops, it produces transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) to activate normal fibroblasts in the stroma, transforming them into cancer-associated …

Objective
To implement and evaluate a problem-based learning (PBL) pain and palliative care elective course to develop studentsʼ pain and symptom management pharmacotherapy knowledge, clinical reasoning process, and self-directed learning skills.
Methods
Each week students received a patient case to independently develop an assessment and plan for each pain and symptom management problem. During class the students discussed their findings within small groups in preparation for a large-group discussion with the instructor. Studentsʼ course grades were based on weekly pre-class case preparation, individual case studies, and self-reflection questions. To assess knowledge gained over the semester a free-response pre- and post-course …

Abstract— Electronic health records (EHRs) offer many potential opportunities for patients, payers, physicians, and other healthcare providers. These opportunities are only realized if healthcare organizations commit to investing in EHRs and providers adopt the new technology for the benefit of patient care, higher quality, fewer errors, and greater efficiency. This paper focuses on increasing the probability those healthcare organizations in general but physicians and providers in particular adopt EHRs as a valuable tool to prevent and manage disease and illness. The adoption of EHRs often has less to do with the technology and more to do with the underlying changes …

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The last two decades have brought revolutionary changes in global health, driven by popular concern over AIDS, novel influenzas, and maternal mortality. Given the rapid globalization that is a defining feature of today’s world, the need for a robust system of global health law has never been greater. Global health law has been defined as the legal norms, processes, and institutions designed primarily to attain the highest possible standard of physical and mental health for the world’s population. Global health law is not an organized legal system, with a unified treaty monitoring body, such as the World Trade Organization. There …

Health care delivery in the United States needs improvement. Each year about 98,000 people die as a result of medical errors and the United States is outranked by a number of developed countries in life expectancy, mortality and comorbidity. Healthcare quality is determined based on the quality of the service provided to the patient during their visit. Apart from the traditional problem solving design and development tools used to improve healthcare quality, The National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine recommend systems engineering principle and systems engineering tools to be used in health care to improve the industry. …

Vulvo-vaginal candidiasis (VVC) is a common condition in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)- infected women. Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2 and TLR4 are key pattern-recognition receptors of the innate immune system in sensing Candida albicans. The aim of this study was to assess the expression of TLR2 and TLR4 signaling pathways in HIV-infected and uninfected women with VVC. Cervico-vaginal fluids (CVF) were obtained from 7 HIV infected and 11 HIV uninfected clinic attendees in KwaZulu-Natal between June, 2011 and December, 2011. VVC was diagnosed clinically and confirmed by Gram stain and culture of genital samples. Monocytes were isolated from a healthy adult …

The Effects Of Skin-To-Skin Contact On Breastfeeding Choice At Discharge, Katie Jean Johnson
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Context: Mothers today are increasingly more likely to choose delivery by C- section rather than vaginally. With the increase in C-section deliveries comes increased concern regarding breastfeeding. Skin-to-skin contact between a mother and a newborn has been shown to have an effect on breastfeeding. Objective: This study investigated the effects on breastfeeding choice for mothers that delivered by C-section and received skin-to-skin contact in the Operating Room or Post-Anesthesia Recovery unit after birth. Previous studies have shown that skin-to-skin contact following birth promotes breastfeeding. Breastfeeding has been shown to provide many benefits to newborns, so it is important for healthcare …
