Adoption And Implementation Of Alcohol And Drug Screening, Brief Intervention, And Referral To Treatment (Sbirt) In School-Based Health Centers : Provider Knowledge, Attitudes, And Perceptions As Barriers And Facilitators, Brett Harris
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Background: Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) has been endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics as an evidence-based strategy to address risky substance use among adolescents in primary care settings. However, less than half of pediatricians even screen adolescents for substance use.

Introduction: Obesity in childhood is associated with an increased prevalence of diabetes and other traditional cardiometabolic risk factors, suggesting an epidemic of premature cardiovascular disease among today’s youth. Glycotoxins, known as advanced glycationend products (AGE’s), activating via the membrane-bound receptors (mRAGE), have been implicated in the pathophysiology of inflammation, (increased tumor necrosis factor-α [TNF-α ]), insulin resistance and vascular dysfunction in adults, but the role of RAGE in the early stages of metabolic disorders is unknown. In this study, we assessed relationship of cardiometabolicrisk factors, mRNA expression of TNF-α and RAGE in peripheral monocytes in adolescents with obesity.

The Reliability Of An Adolescent Dietary Pattern Identified Using Reduced-Rank Regression: Comparison Of A Ffq And 3 D Food Record, Geeta Appannah, Gerda K. Pot, Therese A. O'Sullivan, Wendy H. Oddy, Susan A. Jebb, Gina L. Ambrosini
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Despite the increasing use of dietary patterns (DP) to study diet and health outcomes, relatively few studies have examined the reliability of DP using different dietary assessment methods. Reduced-rank regression (RRR) is an emerging statistical method that incorporates a priori information to characterise DP related to specific outcomes of interest. The aim of the present study was to compare DP identified using the RRR method in a FFQ with those in a 3 d food record (FR). Participants were 783 adolescents from the Western Australian Pregnancy (Raine) Cohort Study who completed both a FFQ and FR at 14 years of …

Pilot Testing A Self-Administered Dietary Assessment Website With School-Age Children And Adolescents Under Laboratory And Free-Living Conditions, Yasmine Probst, Sarah Cufer, Shannon Lin
Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A
Aim: To evaluate the experiences and data of children using the DietAdvice website in a controlled and a free-living environment.
Methods: Observational pilot study under laboratory conditions with face-to-face interviews and a communitybased nutrition and exercise intervention program. The laboratory trial consisted of n = 17 children (aged 9-16 years) and the intervention program consisted of n = 34 adolescents (aged 12-16 years). Thematic analysis of observation/interview notes and χ2 tests and independent samples t-tests (P < 0.05) to compare responses and mean times, respectively, between age groups (group 1 (primary school): 9-12 years; group 2 (secondary school/ adolescent): 13-16 years). Frequency and time of use analyses for the intervention group with comparisons to group 2 of the laboratory observation.
Results: Children had an intermediate (41.2%) or advanced level (58.8%) of computer knowledge and used computers 5.29 ± 2.31 days. There were no significant …

Exploration Of The Genetic Epidemiology Of Asthma: A Review, With A Focus On Prevalence In Children And Adolescents In The Caribbean, A. Mohan, A. J. Roberto, B. C. Whitehill, A. Mohan, A. Kumar

Asthma is a chronic disease caused by the inflammation of the main air passages of the lungs. This paper outlines a review of the published literature on asthma. While a few studies show a trend of rising asthma cases in the Caribbean region, even fewer have explored the genetic epidemiological factors of asthma. This is a literature review that seeks to sum the body of knowledge on the epidemiology of asthma. Specifically, the major objective of the literature review is to provide a unified information base on the current state of factors involved in the genetic epidemiology of asthma. The …
Racial/Ethnic Disparities In Provision Of Dental Procedures To Children Enrolled In Delta Dental Insurance In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Pradeep Bhagavatula, Qun Xiang, Fredrick Eichmiller, Aniko Szabo, Christopher Okunseri
Racial/Ethnic Disparities In Provision Of Dental Procedures To Children Enrolled In Delta Dental Insurance In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Pradeep Bhagavatula, Qun Xiang, Fredrick Eichmiller, Aniko Szabo, Christopher Okunseri
School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications
Objectives: Most studies on the provision of dental procedures have focused on Medicaid enrollees known to have inadequate access to dental care. Little information on private insurance enrollees exists. This study documents the rates of preventive, restorative, endodontic, and surgical dental procedures provided to children enrolled in Delta Dental of Wisconsin (DDWI) in Milwaukee.
Methods: We analyzed DDWI claims data for Milwaukee children aged 0-18 years between 2002 and 2008. We linked the ZIP codes of enrollees to the 2000 US Census information to derive racial/ethnic estimates in the different ZIP codes. We estimated the rates of preventive, restorative, endodontic, …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Almost all previous studies examining the associations between glycaemic load (GL) and metabolic syndrome risk have used a daily GL value. The daily value does not distinguish between peaks of GL intake over the day, which may be more closely associated with the risk of the metabolic syndrome. The aim of the present study was to investigate the cross-sectional associations between daily and mealtime measures of GL and metabolic syndrome risk, including metabolic syndrome components, in adolescents. Adolescents participating in the 14-year follow-up of the Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study completed 3 d food records and metabolic assessments. Breakfast …
