Abstract

Purpose/Objectives: Analyze the use of Electronic Health Records (EHR) to stimulate the critical thinking and decision making required of students in real clinical settings by: 1) integrating current written work into the EHR and 2) creating a robust database of simulated patient cases, including diagnostic test results, physician orders, medications and physical assessment data. Currently, in order to enhance the students’ level of critical thinking, a weekly worksheet is completed utilizing a template in a Word document. The client’s physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs or “stressors” are identified and analyzed using the Neuman Systems Model (NSM).

Background: EHRs are …

How do faculty meet the “net generation” learning needs? The challenge of engaging students was accomplished in this senior leadership course using a variety of strategies. Course requirements included a classroom presentation, multimedia applications, and a quality improvement project completed in a 90 hour practicum. Student-developed websites will be featured and evaluated for design, flow, evidence-based information, credibility, currency, and relevancy to practice. Learning outcomes will be assessed using undergraduate curriculum foundations. Participants will be invited to share strategies that were successful for them in engaging the net generation in meaningful coursework.

Innovative Strategies For Nursing Education With The Electronic Health Record., Carol Sternberger, Beth Kaskel, Linda Meyer, Tammy Toscos

Dr. Beth L. Kaskel

Ever-changing technological advances in healthcare have challenged nursing faculty to design curricula that will produce graduates who are not only comfortable using technology, but more importantly, possess the ability to interpret, analyze and synthesize clinical data that are stored in electronic health records (EHRs). Federal mandates put forth through the HITECH Act, 2009 require all health care institutions to fully adopt EHRs by the year 2014. This transition will lead to changes in the way nurses practice, making it important for educators to provide nursing students with the necessary informatics skills to provide safe and high quality care. Indiana-Purdue University …

Nursing Graduates' Ability To Address Incivility: Kirkpatrick's Level-3 Evaluation, Cynthia Clark, Sara Ahten, Rosemary Macy Dec 2014

Nursing Graduates' Ability To Address Incivility: Kirkpatrick's Level-3 Evaluation, Cynthia Clark, Sara Ahten, Rosemary Macy

Sara M. Ahten

Background Addressing incivility in nursing education has an important twofold purpose, to increase civility within the nursing education experience and to lay the groundwork for creating cultures of civility in professional nursing practice. Given the serious impact of incivility, it is imperative to prepare students to foster civility in their nursing practice upon graduation. Methods In a previous article, the authors described how a classroom-centered, problem-based learning (PBL) scenario, simulating a nurse-to-nurse uncivil encounter, was used to assess student learning according to Level 1 and Level 2 of Kirkpatrick's Model of Evaluation. This subsequent article presents the findings of a …

Treatment-Associated Changes In Body Composition, Health Behaviors, And Mood As Predictors Of Change In Body Satisfaction In Obese Women, James Annesi, Gisele Tennant, Nicole Mareno Nov 2014

Treatment-Associated Changes In Body Composition, Health Behaviors, And Mood As Predictors Of Change In Body Satisfaction In Obese Women, James Annesi, Gisele Tennant, Nicole Mareno

Nicole Mareno

A lack of satisfaction with one’s body is common among women with obesity, often prompting unhealthy “dieting.” Beyond typically slow improvements in weight and body composition, behavioral factors might also affect change in body satisfaction. Age and race/ethnicity (African American vs. White) might moderate such change. Obese women (N = 246; Mage = 43 years; MBMI = 39 kg/m2) initiating a 6-month cognitive-behaviorally based physical activity and nutrition treatment were assessed on possible predictors of body satisfaction change. At baseline, African American and younger women had significantly higher body satisfaction. The treatment was associated with …

A Comparison Of A Social Support Physical Activity Intervention In Weight Management Among Post-Partum Latinas, Colleen Keller, Barbara Ainsworth, Kathryn Records, Michael Todd, Michael Belyea, Sonia Vega-López, Paska Permana, Dean Coonrod, Allison Nagle-Williams

Kathryn Records

Background
Weight gain during the childbearing years and failure to lose pregnancy weight after birth contribute to the development of obesity in postpartum Latinas.

Methods
Madres para la Salud [Mothers for Health] was a 12-month, randomized controlled trial exploring a social support intervention with moderate-intensity physical activity (PA) seeking to effect changes in body fat, fat tissue inflammation, and depression symptoms in sedentary postpartum Latinas. This report describes the efficacy of the Madres intervention.

Results
The results show that while social support increased during the active intervention delivery, it declined to pre-intervention levels by the end of the intervention. There …
