The NSM is one of several instantly recognized and widely used conceptual models of nursing. As is true of all conceptual models of any discipline, the function of the NSM is to provide a broad perspective of phenomena, an umbrella for the more specific activities undertaken by members of the discipline. The NSM represents a way of viewing phenomena within the world of healthcare from the perspectives of clients and caregivers. Four long-standing members of the Board of Trustees of Neuman Systems Model International are honored to have the opportunity to share thoughts about the use of the NSM in …

How do faculty meet the “net generation” learning needs? The challenge of engaging students was accomplished in this senior leadership course using a variety of strategies. Course requirements included a classroom presentation, multimedia applications, and a quality improvement project completed in a 90 hour practicum. Student-developed websites will be featured and evaluated for design, flow, evidence-based information, credibility, currency, and relevancy to practice. Learning outcomes will be assessed using undergraduate curriculum foundations. Participants will be invited to share strategies that were successful for them in engaging the net generation in meaningful coursework.

This symposium provides a rich description of the ways in which simulation can be understood and applied to solve challenges in clinical education. These presentations are the results of work that was done in a nursing program in the Midwest. The authors of the presentations are all faculty at the University in the Nursing Department and have worked together for three years to understand, develop, and integrate high fidelity clinical simulation with sophomore nursing students. This symposium provides participants with the ways simulation can be applied in education to evaluate learning and solidify nursing knowledge. The symposium will start with …

In response to the IOM’s call for change in health care education, the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) Project established six competencies to help nurse educators design curricula. The faculty at one Midwestern University had incorporated these competencies in their program at all levels, but recognized an assessment tool was needed to evaluate students’ clinical performances related to these competencies. The presentation that follows will discuss a simulation project that resulted in the development of the QSEN Competency Assessment Tool (QSEN-CAT). While students participated in an extended two-hour simulated clinical experience, faculty observers recorded clinical behaviors that demonstrated …
