The objectives of our community-wide study are to examine the symptom profile of patients with, as compared with those without, kidney disease who present to the hospital with independently confirmed AMI. METHODS: The symptom profile of 4,482 patients from the Worcester, MA, metropolitan area hospitalized with independently validated AMI at all 11 area medical centers during the 4 study years of 1997, 1999, 2001, and 2003 was examined. BACKGROUND: The purpose of this community-wide study was to describe a >2-decade-long experience (1975-97) in the incidence and death rates associated with complete heart block (CHB) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Limited population-based data exist describing recent, and changes with time therein, incidence and case-fatality rates associated with CHB complicating AMI.

METHODS: We conducted an observational study of 9082 metropolitan Worcester, Mass, residents (1990 census = 437,000) hospitalized with validated AMI in all greater Worcester hospitals during 11 1-year periods between 1975 and 1997.

BACKGROUND: Extremely limited population-based data are available describing recent and temporal trends in the characteristics, treatment, and outcomes of Hispanic and non-Hispanic white patients hospitalized with acute myocardial infarction (AMI).

METHODS: This was a community-based, observational study of 9649 greater Worcester residents hospitalized in all hospitals serving the Worcester, Massachusetts, metropolitan area in 12 one-year periods between 1975 and 1999. In the total study sample, 171 (2%) patients were Hispanic. Hispanic patients were matched with 395 non-Hispanic white patients on the basis of age, sex, and year of hospitalization.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is the third leading cause of death in Puerto Rico. We examined the pre-hospital phase, management and case-fatality-rates (CFR) of patients discharged with acute stroke from the Carolina University of Puerto Rico Hospital during 2007.

METHODS: Trained personnel collected information on demographics, delay-time, mode-of-transportation, management, and mortality from all medical records. OBJECTIVE: As part of a community-wide study examining temporal trends in the incidence and survival rates of acute myocardial infarction, we examined differences between the sexes in overall utilization rates and changes over time, therein, of various therapies used in the management of acute myocardial infarction. In spite of national interest in gender differences in the presentation and management of chronic disease, limited information is available about possible gender differences in the receipt of thrombolytic therapy after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). As part of an ongoing community-based study of AMI, we examined gender differences in the receipt of thrombolytic therapy among 2885 patients with confirmed AMI. The study sample consisted of 1680 males and 1205 females with validated AMI who were admitted to 16 hospitals in the Worcester, Massachusetts, metropolitan area in four study periods between 1986 and 1991.
