A brief literature review was conducted on cerebral palsy to gain general information and statistics. After reviewing the literature, it was noted that there is a significantly high number of children diagnosed with cerebral palsy each year. These individuals are at a high risk to experience the lack of opportunity for a wide choice of recreational activities. To understand the magnitude of the problem an extensive literature review was done on this topic. Cross-cultural healthcare research has grown exponentially in recent years, focusing primarily on the healthcare-related needs of ethnic and linguistic minorities. However, by approaching cultural sensitivity from an ethnic/linguistic perspective, the practitioner runs the risk of relying on essentialized or stereotyped accounts of cultural groups, as well as overlooking the needs of other groups (e.g., gays, elderly, physically challenged) that may validly be viewed as cultures and profitably studied with the tools of cross-cultural scholarship. Purpose: This pilot study compared traditional (paper-based) and electronic (computerized) clinical physiotherapy records. The content of the records and the software’s user acceptability were considered. Methods: A neuro-musculoskeletal patient scenario involving two encounters (initial and follow-up) was scripted and role-played to each of three experienced physiotherapists (A, B and C). Participants assessed the patient and made traditional clinical records. After basic training in an electronic record system, they repeated the assessments and made electronic records via a laptop computer. The exponential integrate-and-fire (EIF) model was introduced by Fourcaud-Trocme et al. (2003) as an extension of the standard leaky integrate-and-fire model (LIF). Here, the nonlinearity in the EIF model’s temporal response to square-wave inputs is investigated. Comparing the time course of onset and offset responses revealed that offset responses have a steeper initial slope, but a slower approach to equilibrium. A linear systems analysis performed for these square-wave inputs indicates that at frequencies above ~40 Hz, gain was slightly smaller for square-wave inputs, but phase did not change significantly relative to simulations in which the corresponding sinusoids were presented in …

Objective: To review practice of massive primary postpartum haemorrhage management and develop a protocol.
Methods: Cross-sectional study conducted at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi between January 1, 2003 and July 31, 2004. Women with primary postpartum haemorrhage and had blood loss >1000ml were included in the study. Medical record files of these women were reviewed for maternal mortality and morbidities which included mode of delivery, possible cause of postpartum haemorrhage, supportive, medical and surgical interventions.

BACKGROUND: Protein acetylation is increasingly recognized as an important mechanism regulating a variety of cellular functions. Several human protein acetyltransferases have been characterized, most of them catalyzing epsilon-acetylation of histones and transcription factors. We recently described the human protein acetyltransferase hARD1 (human Arrest Defective 1). hARD1 interacts with NATH (N-Acetyl Transferase Human) forming a complex expressing protein N-terminal alpha-acetylation activity. RESULTS: We here describe a human protein, hARD2, with 81 % sequence identity to hARD1. The gene encoding hARD2 most likely originates from a eutherian mammal specific retrotransposition event. hARD2 mRNA and protein are expressed in several human cell lines. …

The encapsulated follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma constitutes the most common source of consultation material in thyroid pathology. We present our five consecutive cases to illustrate this issue. The diagnosis of the encapsulated follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma is considerably controversial. These tumors are encapsulated neoplasms and have the nuclear features of papillary thyroid carcinoma. Although the criteria were described for the diagnosis, a considerable subjectivity is present among the pathologists. We prospectively studied the characteristics of 401 patients with first-ever-in-a lifetime stroke who have been admitted consecutively into stroke care unit. During the evaluation of distribution according to age, patients were divided into 7 age groups with 10-year intervals. It was determined that ischemic stroke was mostly seen in the age group 71-80 (32.2%) and the age group 61-70(28.2%). The major risk factor of ischemic stroke was hypertension, followed by diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease, smoking and hypercholesterolemia. In this cross-sectional study, subjects (1,000 households) were sampled from the "city-information-system" based on household satellite photographs of the city. Pleural effusions are very common in general population. There are more than 50 reasons for the etiology. There is limited data on the prevalence of pleural effusions in a population of pregnant women. We prospectively screened 45 pregnant women between May and October 2006. All the pregnant women underwent thoracic ultrasonography during their routine check. Five out of 45 subjects (11%) had minimal and bilateral pleural effusion. None of the subjects was symptomatic. Methods: Ten Amp^r E. coli strains isolated from the stool samples of 21 healthy persons with no antibiotic use during at least three months were screened for TEM-, SHV-, or OXA-type \beta-lactamase genes by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
