Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents

Novel synthases and the corresponding nucleic acids encoding such synthases are disclosed herein. Such synthases possess an active site pocket that includes key amino acid residues that are modified to generate desired terpenoid reaction intermediates and products. Synthase modifications are designed based on, e.g., the three-dimensional coordinates of tobacco 5-epi-aristolochene synthase, with or without a substrate bound in the active site.

Intravenous injection of substance P (SP) stimulates sympathetic ganglia to evoke a greater increase in renal sympathetic nerve activity, heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) in hypertensive than normotensive rats due to upregulation of the NK₁ receptor. These experiments were designed to determine the cellular basis for the enhanced ganglionic responsiveness to NK₁ agonists in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) in comparison to their normotensive counterparts, Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY). Complex patterns of multiple substance use pose clinical and methodological challenges for substance abuse clinical trials research. To increase measurement precision and internal validity, the modal approach has been to target both treatment interventions and outcome assessment to a single class of abused substance. This strategy warrants reconsideration because it entails limitations in recruitment feasibility and generalization of study findings. This report reviews pros and cons of single versus multiple targeted drugs, suggests guidelines for choosing between these strategies and outlines methods for broadening the scope of substance abuse clinical trails to take abuse of multiple substances into account. Objective: To determine whether a difference in breastfeeding behaviors could be observed between newborns whose mothers received epidural analgesia for labor pain relief and those newborns whose mothers received no pain medication in labor. Design: There were two groups of neonates in this study. One group was born to mothers who received epidural analgesia, and one group was born to mothers who received no pain medication for labor. Both groups were observed for initial breastfeeding behaviors using the Premature Infant Breastfeeding Behavior Scale following birth and at 24 hours. Objective This study was designed to assess the microbiological quality of the water used in the dental clinic of Naresuan University (NU). Materials and methods By means of standard plate counts with the use of violet red bile agar, microorganisms in water samples gathered from dental units before and after dental procedures were cultivated and examined at light microscopic level. Results The observed Gram-negative bacilli without spore formation were regarded as total coliforms. วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อรวบรวมและวิเคราะห์จํานวนและการให้บริการรักษาผู้ป่วยที่มีความผิดปกติของการสบฟัน และความสัมพันธ์ของกระดูกขากรรไกรและใบหน้า โดยการจัดฟันร่วมกับการผ่าตัดขากรรไกร (orthognathic surgery)ของผู้ป่วยในโรงพยาบาลคณะทันตแพทยศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย วัสดุและวิธีการ รวบรวมข้อมูลจากเพิ่มประวัติผู้ป่วยของโรงพยากรคณะทันตแพทยศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหา วิทยาลัยในระหว่างปีพุทธศักรา5 2539-2544 ที่ได้รับการผ่าตัดแก้ไ ความผิดปกติ ของการสบฟันจํานวน 115 คน เป็นชาย 46 คน หญิง 69 คน อยู่ในช่วงอายุ 6-45 ปี โดยแจกแจงข้อมูลและทําการวิเคราะห์สาเหตุที่มารับการ รักษา วิธีการรักษา อาการแทรกซ้อนหลังการผ่าตัดระยะเวลาการติดตามผลหลังการผ่าตัดจนกระทั่งอาการทั่วไปคงที่ ผลการศึกษา กลุ่มตัวอย่างเป็นชาย 46 คน คิดเป็น 40% หญิง 69 คน คิดเป็น 40% อายุเฉลี่ย 26 ปี เหตุ ส่วนใหญ่ที่มารับการรักษาคือขากรรไกรล่างยื่นอย่างเดียวและรวมกับความผิดปกติอื่นคิดเป็นร้อยละ 81.7 ผู้ป่วย ได้รับการรักษาโดยการจัดฟันก่อนการผ่าตัดร้อยละ 62.4. ผ่าตัดขากรรไกรสวนใหญ่ได้แก่ ไบลาเทอรอล แซเอลสปลิทเรมิสออสติโอใตมี (bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy) เป็นร้อยละ 91.3 อาการแทรกซ้อนที่สำคัญ 6 เดือนแรกหลังผ่าตัดกรามฝีปากล่าง คิดเป็นร้อยละ 40.7 สรุป ผู้ป่วยที่มีความผิดปกติของขากรรไกรและใบหน้าที่เข้ารับการผ่าตัดในคณะทันตแพทยศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์ มหาวิทยาลัยในระยะเวลา 5 ปี พบว่าสวนใหญ่เป็นการผ่าตัดแก้ไขความผิดปกติของขากรรไกรล่างและผลแทรกซ้อน ที่พบมากที่สุดคือ อาการขาของริมฝีปากล่าง

การรักษาคลองรากฟันซ้ํา หมายถึงการรื้อวัสดุอุดคลองรากฟันออก และดําเนินการรักษาคลองรากฟันใหม่ อย่างถูกวิธีทุกขั้นตอน ตั้งแต่การทําความสะอาด ตกแต่งรูปร่าง และอุดคลองรากฟัน รายงานผู้ป่วยนี้ แสดง ผลสําเร็จของการรักษาคลองรากฟันซ้ํา ที่ไม่ต้องใช้วิธีการผ่าตัดร่วมด้วย ในฟันตัดล่างซ้ายซึ่งมีการระบายของ หนองสู่ภายนอกช่องปาก โดยกล่าวถึงลักษณะที่ตรวจพบในคลินิก ลักษณะภาพรังสี รวมถึงการรักษาคลอง รากฟันซ้ําในฟันทั้ง 2 ซี่ จากการติดตามผลการรักษาเป็นเวลา 1 ปี พบว่า รอยแผลที่เกิดขึ้นภายนอกช่องปาก หายเป็นปกติ ฟันทั้ง 2 สามารถใช้งานได้ดี

ความวิการของกระดูกเบ้าฟันตามแนวยืนพบได้ทั้งในโรคปริทันต์ และโรคที่เกิดจากพยาธิสภาพของเนื้อเยื่อ ในโพรงฟัน การรักษารอยโรคนี้อาจต้องการการรักษาคลองรากฟัน หรือปริทันต์บําบัดอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง หรือ ทั้งสองอย่างร่วมกัน ขึ้นกับผลการตรวจความมีชีวิตของเนื้อเยื่อในโพรงฟัน การตรวจร่องลึกปริทันต์ และภาพรังสี ในรายงานนี้กล่าวถึงการรักษาคลองรากฟันในฟันกรามล่างซ้ายซี่ที่สองของผู้ป่วย ที่มีร่องลึกปริทันต์ในด้านแก้มไกล กลางและด้านลิ้นไกลกลางมากกว่า 10 มิลลิเมตร จากการตรวจความมีชีวิตของฟันพบว่าเป็นฟันตาย การโยก ของฟันอยู่ในระดับ 2 จากภาพรังสีมีการละลายของกระดูกเบ้าฟันเฉพาะที่อย่างรุนแรง การรักษาคลองรากฟัน มีผลทําให้อวัยวะปริทันต์กลับเข้าสู่สภาพปกติได้ เนื่องจากสาเหตุของรอยโรคมาจากพยาธิสภาพของเนื้อเยื่อใน โพรงฟัน จากการติดตามผลการรักษา เป็นเวลา 1 ปี 6 เดือน ฟันอยู่ในสภาพปกติใช้งานได้ดี และไม่พบพยาธิ สภาพในภาพรังสี

Swamps are unique ecological communities that provide many valuable ecosystem services. In Kentucky, however, many swamps were altered by cypress removal and land development in their watersheds. Cypress Creek Swamp, which lies near Paducah in western Kentucky, is a good example of a swamp whose ecological integrity may be threatened by past and current nearby land use practices. This study was conducted to assess the water quality and macro- and microinvertebrate communities in the swamp. To access the content of digital texts efficiently, it is necessary to provide more sophisticated access than keyword based searching. GeneScene provides biomedical researchers with research findings and background relations automatically extracted from text and experimental data. These provide a more detailed overview of the information available. The extracted relations were evaluated by qualified researchers and are precise. A qualitative ongoing evaluation of the current online interface indicates that this method to search the literature is more useful and efficient than keyword based searching.

Platelet Endothelial Cell Adhesion Molecule-1 (PECAM-1), an immunoglobulin family adhesion molecule, is involved in endothelial migration and angiogenesis. We found that PECAM-1 deficient endothelial cells exhibit enhanced nondirected single cell motility and extension formation at the expense of wound-healing migration. These in vitro endothelial behaviors model aspects of highly developmentally and pathophysiologically relevant processes. Wound healing migration may model the reendothelialization of denuded vasculature following balloon angioplasty or the remodeling of vascular endothelium under variant flow conditions, while single cell motility is prominently involved in developmental processes such as endocardial-mesenchymal transition within the cardiac cushion. The potential influence of aerobic fitness on RPE estimations during extended exercise bouts is not well understood. The current study compared RPE-Overall, RPE-Legs and RPE-Chest between fit (n=7) and unfit (n=6) males. Subjects completed a graded cycling test and then, in a counterbalanced order, on two separate days cycled for 60min (intensity~90% of the Onset of Blood Lactate Accumulation (OBLA) - determined via gas exchange indices) at 30}1 degrees Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) and 18}1 degrees WBGT. The myths and misconceptions that surround cocaine use lead to the over-estimation of the prevalence of cocaine addiction in society. Health education curricula and drug policy do not differentiate between cocaine use and abuse. This study describes the cocaine consumption patterns in a nonclinical, non-incarcerated sample of cocaine users. The resulting patterns are compared to those found by Cohen (1989) and Cohen and Sas (1993, 1994, 1995). DRUGNET is an online survey of recreational drug use by nondeviant adults via the WWW. The present study examined the effects of punishment given to the most valued team member who has committed a company rule violation. The team is working on an important project where the contribution by that valued member is critical to project completion. The study assessed the effects of the severity of rule violation, the severity of the punishment, the consistency of the punishment, and who is impacted by the punishment. The results indicated that when a valued employee has committed a rule violation, applying consistent punishment is perceived as more fair and appropriate by the teammates. It has been shown that saccade-related neurons in the superior colliculus (SC) display an increased level of prestimulus activity and a higher stimulus-related burst in action potentials preceding direction errors in the anti-saccade task compared with correct anti-saccades. From this, it has been hypothesized that errors occur when the incoming visual signal in the SC passes a threshold and triggers a reflexive saccade. This hypothesis predicts that an attenuated visual signal will reduce the number of direction errors. In Europe, 6 of the 11 genospecies of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato are prevalent in questing Ixodes ricinus ticks. In most parts of Central Europe, B. afzelii, B. garinii, and B. valaisiana are the most frequent species, whereas B. burgdorferi sensu stricto, B. bissettii, and B. lusitaniae are rare. Previously, it has been shown that B. afzelii is associated with European rodents. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify reservoir hosts of B. garinii and B. valaisiana in Slovakia.
