A descriptive correlational design was utilized to explore the relationship between preoperative self-efficacy and the postoperative outcomes of distance ambulated, brace application, discharge disposition and length of stay in surgical spinal fusion patients. Social cognitive theory and the concept of self-efficacy were used to provide the theoretical framework. A novel self-efficacy questionnaire was developed to measure the independent variable, it was tested for reliability and validity in a 16 patient pilot study. The pilot study was followed by a study of 52 post-operative patients. Preoperative self-efficacy significantly correlated to distance ambulated in the entire sample. Adolescents with chronic diseases must accomplish the management of their healthcare decisions and practices; those with epilepsy also deal with the uncertainty of seizure disorders and the stigma linked to this disease. This secondary analysis of data examined psychosocial variables for adolescents with epilepsy within the developmental-contextual framework proposed by Hohnbeck and Shapera (1999). No statistically significant differences were found between the mean Piers-Harris scores, self-assessment scores on the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) or the Revised Family APGAR for the subgroups of males, females, younger (9 to 11.44 years) or older (11.45 to 14 years) adolescents. Dose coefficients permit simple determination of radiation dose associated with various exposure scenarios, and ultimately permit radiation safety personnel to assess the health risks to workers in a nuclear facility. Specifically, radiation safety personnel use dose coefficients to determine the radiation dose incurred to a tissue or organ system from a given exposure. These parameters are often expressed in terms of Annual Limits on Intake (ALIs) and Derived Air Concentrations (DACs).

Direct laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation during anaesthesia and cutting, stretching and tissue manipulation during surgery is the most painful time for a patient undergoing surgery. The elicited pain during a surgical procedure is associated with significant hemodynamic changes including rise in blood pressure, heart rate, sweating, pupillary dilatation etc. These hemodynamic changes are not desirable and may produce deleterious effects in patients with hypertension, ischemic heart disease and cerebro-vascular disease and impose a great challenge for anaesthesiologist to maintain physiologic homeostasis during these periods of stress. We examine the incidence, form, and research consequences of measurement error in measure of fatal injury risk in United States workplaces using both BLS and NIOSH data. We find evidence of substantial measurement errors in the fatality risk researchers attach to individual workers when estimating the implicit price of risk and the value of a statistical life. We first examine possible classical attenuation bias in the fatality risk coefficient. However, because we also find non-classical measurement error that differs across multiple risk measures and is not independent of other regressors, more complex statistical procedures than a standard instrumental variables estimator …

CONTEXT: Youth in alternative high schools engage in risky sexual behavior at higher rates than do their peers in regular schools, placing themselves at an increased risk of sexually transmitted disease and unintended pregnancy. Family connectedness is associated with reduced adolescent sexual risk-taking, although this association has not been tested among alternative school youth.

METHODS: A sample of 976 urban, predominantly minority alternative high school students in Houston, Texas, were surveyed in 2000-2002. Survey data were analyzed using logistic regression to determine whether family connectedness is related to sexual risk-taking.

RESULTS: Overall, 68% of students reported ever having had sex. …

In searching the Staphylococcus aureus genome, we previously identified sarT, a homolog of sarA, which encodes a repressor for alpha-hemolysin synthesis. Adjacent but transcribed divergently to sarT is sarU, which encodes a 247-residue polypeptide, almost twice the length of SarA. Sequence alignment disclosed that SarU, like SarS, which is another SarA homolog, could be envisioned as a molecule with two halves, with each half being homologous to SarA. SarU, as a member of the SarA family proteins, disclosed conservation of basic residues within the helix-turn-helix motif and within the beta hairpin loop, two putative DNA binding domains within this protein …

This study provided an updated overview of ICM courses and discussed changes that have occurred during the past decade. In addition, this study developed a profile of ICM course directors, an area that had not been investigated previously. It was the objective of the current study to evaluate the ability of 10-fold cross validation and prediction error sum of squares (PRESS) statistic to identify population pharmacokinetic models (PPKM) that were estimated from data without influence observations versus PPKMs from data containing influence observations. The evaluation of 10-fold cross validation and PRESS statistic from Leave-one-out cross-validation for PPK model validation was performed in 3 Phases. In Phase 1 model parameters (theta and clearance) were estimated for datasets with and without influence observations. It was found that influence observations caused an over-estimation of the model parameters.

Complete sequencing and annotation of the M. leprae genome has provided new information related to proteins constituting its hypothetical proteome. Since M. leprae can not be grown in vitro, novel approaches are needed to determine which proteins are expressed during infection and whether these proteins are related to pathogenesis. The controversy that has surrounded the value of quantitative research methods as opposed to qualitative approaches as a means to increasing the knowledge and understanding of human behaviour in health and illness, has been contested by nurse scholars for several decades. This paper continues debate around this issue and provides a critique of the problems associated with these competing paradigms. It challenges the convention that all nursing research must be objective and value free in order to be scientific, and provides an overview of the processes that should be considered by researchers utilizing qualitative methods of inquiry.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of baker's yeast as a protein source instead of soybean meal in dairy cow diets. Four dairy cows were utilized in a 4 x 4 Latin Square experiment. Diets included 0.0% (Control Diet), 6.6% (Diet 1), 13.2% (Diet 2), and 19.8% (Diet 3) baker's yeast containing 3.56 x 10^8 CFU/g. In this study, which was conducted to detect the critical control points and to investigate the direct and cross-contamination sources in white pickled cheese production, 21 control points were examined for aerobe mesophilic counts, staphylococcus-micrococcus, coagulase-positive staphylococcus, enterobacteriaceae, coliform bacteria, E. coli, enterococcus, yeast and mould counts. At the end of the spawning season, semen was collected without anesthesia by abdominal massage from 37 rainbow trout according to different age groups. In collected semens, color, volume, motility, activity time (duration of motility), concentration, total spermatozoa and pH were recorded. Furthermore, body weight and body length were measured and correlations beetween spermatological properties and these parameters were assessed. This study was conducted on sheep and goats to investigate theileriosis and tick infestations around Kayseri between August 1997 and October 1999. During this period a total of 300 small ruminants consisting of 250 sheep and 50 goats were microscopically examined for Theileria species. Blood smears were prepared from the punctured ear of each animal for microscopic examination. At the same time, ticks were collected from the animals.
