Na(+),K(+)-ATPase plays an essential role in mammalian blastocoel formation (cavitation) by driving trans-epithelial sodium transport. Previously, the alpha1 and beta1 subunit isoforms of this enzyme were identified in preimplantation mouse embryos and were assumed to be responsible for this function. Here we show that mRNAs encoding an additional alpha subunit isoform (alpha3) and the remaining two beta subunit isoforms are also present in preimplantation embryos. Whereas alpha3 mRNA accumulates between the four-cell and the blastocyst stages and thus results from embryonic transcription, the same could not be demonstrated for beta2 and beta3 mRNAs. Objective—To determine the distribution of lesions and extent of tissues infected with Mycobacterium bovis in a captive population of white-tailed deer.

Design—Cross-sectional study.

Animals—116 captive white-tailed deer.

Procedure—Deer were euthanatized, and postmortem examinations were performed. Tissues with gross lesions suggestive of tuberculosis were collected for microscopic analysis and bacteriologic culture. Tissues from the head, thorax, and abdomen of deer with no gross lesions were pooled for bacteriologic culture. Tonsillar, nasal, oral, and rectal swab specimens, fecal samples, and samples of hay and pelleted feed, soil around feeding sites, and water from 2 natural ponds were collected …

Hearing one’s own speech is important for language learning and maintenance of accurate articulation. For example, people with postlinguistically acquired deafness often show a gradual deterioration of many aspects of speech production. In this manuscript, data are presented that address the role played by acoustic feedback in the control of voice fundamental frequency (F0). Eighteen subjects produced vowels under a control ~normal F0 feedback! and two experimental conditions: F0 shifted up and F0 shifted down. The present invention provides, inter alia, formulations useful to ameliorate symptoms associated with mucosal abrasions, specifically those due to dental orthodontic brackets; oral surgery; periodontal surgery or other procedures. For instance, there is a formulation comprising: 65 to 75% microcrystalline wax; 5 to 15% non-ionic polymer; 15 to 25% topical anesthetic; and 1 to 5% surfactant, wherein the ratio of non-ionic polymer to microcrystalline wax is no greater than 0.2. Preferably, for solid topical anesthetics, the particle size is less than the apertures of a 100-mesh screen. However, the topical anesthetic may also be a liquid. Formulations wherein the mixture …

An ultrasonic imaging system includes a receive beamformer that generates analog receive signals and a scan converter. A receive signal processing path interconnects the receive beamformer and the scan converter, and this processing path included both an A/D converter characterized by a selectable sampling rate and at least one filter characterized by at least one filter parameter. The filter parameter is selected as a function of the sampling rate to provide enhanced image quality.

One-Trial Context Fear Conditioning With Immediate Shock: The Roles Of Transport And Contextual Cues, Rick A. Bevins, Anthony S. Rauhut, Janice E. Mcphee, John J. B. Ayres

In three experiments, using a total of 120 albino rats, we assessed whether transportation cues might evoke some of the freezing (i.e., defensive immobility) that we see in a context on a day following a footshock given immediately after placement in that context. The results suggested that immediate shock could directly condition strong fear to both simulated and actual transport cues. Although conditioning to transport cues explains some of the freezing that is seen on the test day, it does not explain all of it. We also found evidence that some of the freezing is due to conditioning to permanent …

Anticipating Adulthood: Expected Timing Of Work And Family Transitions Among Rural Youth, Lisa J. Crockett, C. Raymond Bingham

This study examined family and individual processes influencing the future expectancies of adolescents (N = 345) from an economically stressed rural community. The anticipated timing and sequencing of key role transitions (school completion, job entry, marriage, and parenthood) were examined for each gender. In addition, factors contributing to individual differences in expected timing were examined, and gender differences in predictors were tested. Results indicated that rural adolescents' expectancies about adult role transitions diverged somewhat from societal norms with respect to timing. Family background and relationships, adolescents' attitudes and behaviors, and educational aspirations all contributed to individual differences in expected …

Parental Monitoring And Adolescent Adjustment: An Ecological Perspective, Kristen C. Jacobson, Lisa J. Crockett

This study uses an ecological framework to examine the associations between parental monitoring and a variety of indicators of adolescent adjustment. Specifically, investigators examined whether higher levels of parental monitoring were associated with higher adolescent grade point average, lower levels of adolescent depression, and lower levels of adolescent sexual activity and minor delinquency, and whether these relations were moderated by gender, grade level, or mothers’ work status. Participants were 424 7th to 12th graders from a single rural school district in central Pennsylvania. This discriptive study used the Health Belief Model to examine the benefits, barriers, and action cues to obtaining Papanicolaou tests perceived by women age 50 and older. A convenience sample of 48 women were interviewed. Comparisons were made between those who obtained Papanicolaou tests at least every three years (n = 24) and those who did not (n = 24)..

One cue to action and four perceived benefits were found to be important influences. Women who had received Papanicolaou tests less frequently than every three years agreed that certain barriers had influenced their decisions more than women who had received …

The alien hand syndrome was diagnosed in six stroke patients treated in our hospital during the period from 1993 to 1998. Left cerebral artery occlusion was responsible for the stroke episode in five patients and hydrocephalus subsequent to intracerebral hemorrhage in one patient. All of the patients were right handed and exhibited behavior of forced grasping and impulsive groping, with their dominant hand, of objects entering their field of vision. The purpose of this project was to evaluate qualitatively real-time ultrasound imaging using objective and subjective techniques to determine the minimum bandwidth required for clinical diagnosis of various anatomical and pathological states. In the experimental setup live ultrasound video samples representing the most common clinical examinations were compressed at 128, 256, 384, 768, 1152 and 1536 kbps using a compressor-decompressor (CODEC) adhering to International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) recommendation H.261. A protocol for qualitative evaluation was developed and subjective and objective testing were performed based on this protocol. The skin serves many purposes, acting as a barrier to infection, protecting internal organs, contributing to temperature regulation, storing insulating fats, excreting electrolytes and water, and providing tactile sensory input. This article focuses on a review of normal skin structure and function and selected neonatal skin disorders. The disorders reviewed are Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome, epidermolysis bullosa, and the ichthyoses. The basis for each skin disorder is presented. Nursing management and skin care are incorporated into the review of each selected disorder.

A survey of utilization and demand of Rehabilitation Information System (RIS) for out-patient clinic service was done by questionnaires from July 1999 to December 1999. One hundred and seventeen responses (52.0% of total samples) were adopted for analysis. The questionnaires included data base, utilization of rehabilitation information system for outpatient clinic service and demands of specific system . The results showed that 77.8% of rehabilitation clinics used computer system for outpatient clinic service; and 67.5% of them had electric chart record. ”From January 1993 to June 1996, one hundred and fifty-four spinal cord injury (SCI) patients received urodynamic studies, including urosonography, radionuclide renography, voiding cystoureth-ragrphy, intravenous urography, and/or cystometry. Among the subjects, 125 patients were male (81.2%) and 29 were female (18.8%); there are 133 patients (86.4%) with upper motor neuron lesion and 21 (13.4%) with lower motor neuron lesion.One hundred and eleven patients (72.7%) had the history of symptomatic urinary tract infection, and urolithiasis was noted in 3 patients (1.9%). The primary purpose of this qualitative study was designed to identify, from a client and medical personnel perspective, factors that associated with the quality of life of patients with spinal cord injuries (SCI). Three focus groups were recruited and conducted: newly injured patients, patients with a chronic SCI, and medical personnel who worked with these patients. Responses were audio taped, transcribed, and analyzed by pattern coding according to domains and facets of Taiwan version of WHOQOL-BREF. However, the hiccup might last for more than one month in rare cases, defined as an intractable hiccup, as one of the clini-cal manifestations of respiratory, gastrointestinal or neurological diseases.A case with an ischemic brain stem stroke is investigated herein. Patients with mech-anical injuries to corpus callosum, e,g., tumor compression, anterior or posterior cerebral artery infarction may have in neurological defects including left apraxia, left alexia or anomia to colors. Nevertheless, these symptoms may not occur in congenital corpus callosum agenesis, complete or incomplete. Congenital corpus callosum agenesis frequently coexists with other deficits, such as mental retardation, spastic quadriplegia or spastic diplegia, and seizure. Brain stem tumors are relatively rare but predominantly diseases of childhood. Most of them are astrocytomas or ependymomas histologically. Intracranial teratomas arise in the midline, most comm-only in the pineal and suprasellar regions. Only one documented paper illustrated a teratoma arising in the brain stem.
