By analyzing the experiences of nongovernmental organizations across India, this publication reviews important concerns that should inform the discourse on male partnership. The previous views of reaching men as contraceptive users and removing them as impediments to women’s efforts to control fertility are too limited. High exposures of Vietnam veterans to 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p- dioxin, a dioxin contained in the herbicide mixture Agent Orange, have previously been demonstrated to be associated with an increased prevalence of diabetes and hyperinsulinemia in non-diabetic subjects. Sixty-nine persons were identified who were in good health and had normal glucose levels during glucose tolerance testing. These subjects lived within 25 miles of the Vertac/Hercules Superfund site located in Jacksonville, Arkansas. The blood sera lipid concentrations of TCDD for the 69 subjects ranged between 2 and 94 ppt. When subjects with blood sera lipid TCDD levels in the top 10% (TCDD > 15 ppt, …

Social support can have significant stress-preventive and stress-buffering benefits for troubled individuals in everyday circumstances. Consequently, it is not surprising that many therapeutic and preventive programs enlist social support to address problems of child and family psychopathology, especially in the context of “two-generation interventions” that seek to improve child well-being by strengthening parental functioning and parent–child relationships. Home visitation programs are the best known of these two-generation strategies and have become the focus of state-level and national efforts to support families and prevent harm to children. PROBLEM/CONDITION: Since 1971, CDC and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have maintained a collaborative surveillance system for collecting and periodically reporting data relating to occurrences and causes of waterborne-disease outbreaks (WBDOs).

REPORTING PERIOD COVERED: This summary includes data from January 1997 through December 1998 and a previously unreported outbreak in 1996.

DESCRIPTION OF THE SYSTEM: The surveillance system includes data regarding outbreaks associated with drinking water and recreational water. State, territorial, and local public health departments are primarily responsible for detecting and investigating WBDOs and voluntarily reporting them to CDC on a standard form.

The kinetics and mechanisms of macromclecular absorption from the airways of the rat lung were studied in vivo and in vitro, following identical solute administration methods. The isolated perfused rat lung (IPRL) was used as an in vitro model, and the disposition of 7.4 and 4.3 kDa fluorophore-labeled polyhydroxyethylaspartamide (F-PHEA) and other small and macromolecular reference solutes was investigated across doses and in the presence of a variety of biochemical inhibitors.

Absorption profiles of F-PHEA, and the solute's lung distribution at different times after administration, were statistically identical in vivo and in vitro, showing that the IPRL possessed a viable …

Listeria monocytogenes is a gram-positive, food-borne human and animal pathogen. L.innocua is a non-pathogenic species the most closely related to L. monocytogenes. Comparative genomics between a pathogenic and a closely related non-pathogenic species is a powerful approach for identifying genes or regions on the chromosome, which might be involved in virulence. Therefore whole genome sequencing of these two organisms was undertaken. Objectives: To compare the rates of domestic violence reported by mothers with those identified by physicians, to compare the rates of harsh discipline practices reported by mothers with the rates of abuse identified by physicians, and to examine the relationship between reported domestic violence and harsh discipline practices.

Design: Interviews with parents and pediatricians to compare pediatric detection of domestic violence and child abuse with parental reports of domestic violence and harsh discipline practices.

Setting: Community-based pediatric practices in the 13-town greater New Haven, Conn, area.

Remifentanil (4-methoxycarbonyl-4-[(1-oxopropyl)phyenylamino]-1- piperidinepropionic acid methyl ester) is a μ-opioid receptor agonist with considerable abuse potential in racing horses. The identification of its major equine urinary metabolite, 4-methoxycarbonyl-4-[(1- oxopropyl)phenylamino]-1-piperidinepropionic acid, an ester hydrolysis product of remifentanil is reported. Administration of remifentanil HCl (5 mg, intravenous) produced clear-cut locomotor responses, establishing the clinical efficacy of this dose. ELISA analysis of postadministration urine samples readily detected fentanyl equivalents in these samples. Mass spectrometric analysis, using solid-phase extraction and trimethylsilyl (TMS) derivatization, showed the urine samples contained parent remifentanil in low concentrations, peaking at 1 h. More significantly, a major peak was identified as …

Public perception about the differences between these professionals has been the focus of many studies and the results generally suggest that the public cannot clearly distinguish among these mental heath professionals. The present study is also concerned with perceptions about the various mental health professionals, in particular, perceptions of clinical psychologists relative to other professionals in this field. Increasing Readiness To Change Among Smokers In A Primary Care Setting, Sheila F. Collicott

This study compared the effectiveness of two brief interventions, direct advice and motivational interviewing, for increasing motivation to quit among male smokers in the pre-contemplation and contemplation stages of change who were primary care patients at an Eastern urban VA medical center. Contrary to expectations, participants receiving motivational interviews did not increase more in readiness to change, motivation, and actions to quit, than those receiving direct advice or a control conversation, nor did they smoke fewer cigarettes per day. As expected, contemplators reported more cutting down and quit attempts than pre-contemplators. Factors that may have limited the effectiveness of interventions …

With the rapid advances in the field of biotechnology during the last decade, many peptides and proteins have been produced and evaluated for therapy of various diseases, including cancer. However, rapid clearance and the possibility of immunogenicity after the in vivo administration of these biotechnology-driven products have impeded their marketing. To circumvent these problems, synthetic and natural polymers such as polyethylene glycol (PEG) and dextrans, respectively, have been covalently attached to proteins, and some of these protein-polymer conjugates have shown promising therapeutic results. Ten years ago, philosopher Robert E. Goodin published "No Smoking: The Ethical Issues." Goodin argued that the liberty of smokers can be justifiably limited for two reasons: to prevent harm to third persons and to prevent harm to smokers themselves under circumstances which make their decision to smoke substantially non-autonomous. In this article Thaddeus Pope reexamines the harm principle and the soft paternalism principle in light of more recent legal developments, gives them additional content, and carefully demarcates the justificatory scope of each. Mental health services in the United States were designed for European American consumers, but with burgeoning multicultural populations these services have proven inadequate and underutilized. This paper examines research on cultural competencies of agencies and clinicians relevant to a mental health practice model, the Multicultural Assessment-Intervention Process model (MAIP). This model was modified for systematic application in a California agency, the Tri-City Mental Health Center, to provide a flexible blueprint for major alterations in agency practice and programs that affect the entire system of care. This Article presents the common concerns of the religious traditions of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity with their mutual emphasis on preserving the dignity of all beings. This and other common values must form the foundation upon which all questions related to the cloning debate must be predicated.

การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาระดับความเครียดในบทบาทของผู้ดูแลผู้สูงอายุที่ต้อง พึ่งพาและเปรียบเทียบความเครียดในบทบาทของผู้ดูแลผู้สูงอายุที่ต้องพึ่งพาระหว่างก่อนและหลัง การใช้ตัวแบบการดูแลผู้สูงอายุที่ต้องพึ่งพา กลุ่มตัวอย่างเป็นผู้ดูแลผู้สูงอายุที่ต้องพึ่งพาที่เข้ารับ การรักษาเป็นผู้ป่วยสามัญในแผนกอายุรกรรม สถาบันประสาทวิทยา แผนกอายุรกรรมและอายุรกรรม ประสาท โรงพยาบาลจุฬาลงกรณ์ และอยู่ในช่วงวางแผนจำหน่ายผู้ป่วยแห่งละ 15 คน จำนวน 30 คน โดยใช้วิธีการสุ่มตัวอย่างแบบง่ายและดำเนินการวิจัยแบบกึ่งทดลองชนิดหนึ่งกลุ่ม โดยวัดก่อนทดลอง และหลังทดลอง (The one group pretest-posttest design) ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ระดับความเครียด ในบทบาทของผู้ดูแลผู้สูงอายุที่ต้องพึ่งพาก่อนการใช้ตัวแบบการดูแลผู้สูงอายุที่ต้องพึ่งพาอยู่ในระดับ ปานกลาง (X = 2.52) ระดับความเครียดในบทบาทของผู้ดูแล ผู้สูงอายุที่ต้องพึ่งพาหลังการใช้ตัวแบบ การดูแลผู้สูงอายุที่ต้องพึ่งพาอยู่ในระดับต่ำ (X = 1.51) ความเครียดในบทบาทของผู้ดูแลผู้สูงอายุที่ ต้องพึ่งพาหลังการใช้ตัวแบบการดูแลผู้สูงอายุที่ต้องพึ่งพาทั้งรายด้านและโดยรวมน้อยกว่าก่อนการใช้ ตัวแบบอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .05 จากผลการศึกษาเสนอแนะว่าควรนําตัวแบบการดูแล ผู้สูงอายุที่ต้องพึ่งพามาใช้ในการเตรียมสภาพจิตใจของผู้ดูแลโดยการลดความเครียดในบทบาทของผู้ดูแลผู้สูงอายุที่ต้องพึ่งพา และนำตัวแบบการดูแลผู้สูงอายุที่ต้องพึ่งพามาใช้เป็นเครื่องมือในกระบวนการ วางแผนจำหน่าย จะทำให้การจำหน่ายผู้ป่วยสูงอายุที่ต้องพึ่งพามีประสิทธิภาพมากขึ้น

การศึกษาครั้งนี้เป็นการศึกษาเรื่องการรับรู้เรื่องโรคเอดส์ของนักเรียนระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษา ตอนปลาย จังหวัดสงขลา โดยจําแนกตามเพศ อายุ ระดับชั้นที่ศึกษา สถานที่ตั้งของสถานศึกษา รายได้ที่ได้รับจากผู้ปกครอง และพฤติกรรมทางเพศ กลุ่มตัวอย่างเป็นนักเรียนระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษา ตอนปลาย จังหวัดสงขลา ที่ลงทะเบียนเรียนในปีการศึกษา 2538 จำนวน 965 คน ที่ได้มาจาก การสุ่มแบบหลายขั้นตอนจากประชากรจํานวน 12,929 คน เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัยเป็นแบบสอบถาม และแบบทดสอบ วิธีการทางสถิติที่ใช้ในการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลและทดสอบสมมติฐาน คือ การทดสอบที่ การทดสอบเอฟ การหาความสัมพันธ์ การวิเคราะห์ความแปรปรวนและการทดสอบความแตกต่าง ของคะแนนเฉลี่ยเป็นรายคู่ ภายหลังการวิเคราะห์ความแปรปรวนด้วยวิธีของนิวแมน-คูลส์ \nผลการวิจัยสรุปได้ ดังนี้ \n1. นักเรียนชายและนักเรียนหญิงมีความรู้เกี่ยวกับโรคเอดส์ และมีเจตคติต่อผู้ป่วย โรคเอดส์หรือผู้ติดเชื้อเอดส์ แตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .01 และมีการป้องกันและ การปฏิบัติตนเพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงโรคเอดส์ แตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .05 \n2. นักเรียนที่มีอายุต่างกัน มีความรู้เกี่ยวกับโรคเอดส์ มีเจตคติต่อผู้ป่วยโรคเอดส์หรือ ผู้ติดเชื้อเอดส์ แตกต่างกันอย่างไม่มีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ สำหรับการป้องกันและการปฏิบัติตนเพื่อ หลีกเลี่ยงโรคเอดส์ นักเรียนที่มีอายุต่างกัน มีการป้องกันและการปฏิบัติตนเพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงโรคเอดส์ แตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .05 และเมื่อวิเคราะห์เป็นรายคู่พบว่า นักเรียนที่มีอายุ 16-18 ปี มีการป้องกันและการปฏิบัติตนเพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงโรคเอดส์ดีกว่านักเรียนที่มีอายุต่ำกว่า 16 ปี และ นักเรียนที่มีอายุสูงกว่า 18 ปี อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .05 \n3. นักเรียนในระดับชั้นที่ศึกษาต่างกัน มีความรู้เกี่ยวกับโรคเอดส์ มีเจตคติต่อผู้ป่วย โรคเอดส์หรือผู้ติดเชื้อเอดส์ มีการป้องกันและการปฏิบัติตนเพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงโรคเอดส์ แตกต่างกันอย่างมี นัยสําคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .01 และเมื่อวิเคราะห์เป็นรายคู่ พบว่าความรู้เกี่ยวกับโรคเอดส์ นักเรียน ระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 5 และ 6 มีความรู้เกี่ยวกับโรคเอดส์ดีกว่านักเรียนระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 4 เจตคติต่อผู้ป่วยโรคเอดส์หรือผู้ติดเชื้อเอดส์ นักเรียนระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 5 มีเจตคติต่อผู้ป่วย โรคเอดส์หรือผู้ติดเชื้อเอดส์ดีกว่านักเรียนระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 4 และ 6 การป้องกันและการปฏิบัติตนเพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงโรคเอดส์ นักเรียนระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 6 มีการป้องกันและ การปฏิบัติตนเพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงโรคเอดส์ดีกว่านักเรียนระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 4 …
