The Effects Of Shock Waves On The Rat Fetus, Orhan Yalçin, Lütfi Tahmaz, Zuhal Yumbul, İdris Bi̇lgi̇ç

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

There is an ongoing controversy regarding shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) contraindicated during pregnancy (1, 2). While the effects of shock waves on a variety of cells in both clinical and experimental studies are well documented, their effects on the fetus remain to be clarified. In this study, we investigated the effects of SWL on the rat fetus. On the 8th, 11th, 14th and 17th days of pregnancy, 100, 250 or 500 shock waves were produced with a Multimed 2001 ELMED Systems Lithotriptor. In ongoing pregnancy, the effects of SWL on fetuses ranged from mild in early pregnancy to moderate and …

Anatomic And Hrct Demonstration Ofmidline Sternal Foramina, Zühre Aslı Aktan, Recep Savaş

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Midline sternal foramina are uncommon anomalies. Because of this, it is possible to mistakenly identify such a defect as defect as a gunshot wound or sternal disease by CT. In this study the frequency of midline sternal foramina in Turkish adults is investigated by high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and visual inspection of sternal bones.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Ascites, being an accumulation of excess fluid within the peritoneal cavity, is most frequently encountered in patients with cirrhosis or certain other diseases such as congestive cardiac failure, peritoneal tuberculosis and some primary or secondary peritoneal tumours. This study included 17 patients (5 females, 12 males) with malignant ascites (MA) and 23 patients (13 females, 10 males) with nonmalignant ascites (NMA). We aimed to determinet the values for total sialic acid (SA), pH, cholesterol, fibronectin, total protein concentrations and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity in ascitic fluid for the differential diagnosis of ascites. While total SA, fibronectin, cholesterol, LDH and total …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Variations of the limiting and internal sulci of the human cuneus was studied using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on 209 healthy individuals and the sulcal pattern of the right hemispheres of both sexes were evaluated. The internal sulci were divided into supreme, superior, middle and inferior sulci. Sulci were classified according to their localizations, courses, and terminations. Cuneus angle was measured and found as 68.84±9.74° and no sex differences was found for this angle.

In this studry 32 hyperglycemic patients with type II DM were treated with diet (7 patients), with gliclazide, an oral antidiabetic agent (10 patients), or with insulin (15 patients). The levels of liporoteins, apolipoprotein A and B and LCAT enzyme are measured before the therapy and 3 weeks after the achievement of glycemic control. Treatment types are compared with each other and with control group (10 normal persons) triglyseride (TG) and VLDL levels which were found to be high in all of the patients decreased in all groups to levels similar to control group. TC (total cholesterol), LDL, TC/HDL, LDL/HDL …

G6pd Deficiency In Turkish Cypriots, Ayşe Sözüöz, İlkay Çamber

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

1108 Turkish Cypriot men and 318 male labourers from mainland Turkey were screened for G6PD deficiency and haemoglobinopathy traits. The results revealed a 6.7% G6PD deficiency rate in the Turkish Cypriot men and a 1.6% prevalance rate in the Turkish men. The mean haemoglobin level of the G6PD deficient males was approximately 1g/dl lower than that of the non-deficient males.

Cytochrome P-450 Reductase Activities In Theliver Microsomes Of Diabetic Rats Induced Withsome Chemical Solvents, Yavuz Si̇li̇ğ, Öge Çeti̇nkaya

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Cytochrome P-450 Reductase enzyme is an important enzyme providing electrons to the microsomal cytochrome P-450 enzyme system metabolizing some endogenous subtances forming in the liver, drugs, chemical carcinogens insecticides and food preservation materials. In this work, it has been attempted to determine the alterations brought about in the enzyme activities by oral administering acetone, isopropanol and ethanol to chemically induced diabetic rats. The rats in whom diabetes was induced diabetic by 65 mg/kg streptozotocin (stz) were divided into four main groups as a stz alone (group I), stz + aceton (group II), stz + isopropanol (group III), stz + ethanol …

Teratogenic Effects And The Role In The Etiologyof Atopic Diseases Of Erythrosine(Fd&C Red No.3), Onur K. Uysal, Erinç Aral

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Erythrosine (FD&C Red No.3, di sodium salt of 2,4,5,7-tetra-iodofluorescein); is used extensively as a colour additive in foods, drugs and cosmetics. Previous studies have shown that some of the food additives, depending on their long-term and short-term use, have potential carcinogenic, toxic and teratogenic effects. In Turkey this colourant has temporary permission of use until studies are completed about it. In addition food colours may cause allergic reactioins due to food intolerance. In our study 17 pregnant rats are divided into two groups: control and erythrosine group. 7 Wistar albino rats were administered 5 ml erythrosine (2mg/ml) by gavage at …
