Construction And Validation Of Six Mental Health Sub-Scales By Age, Sex, And Educational Status, Thomas James Boynton Jul 1964

Construction And Validation Of Six Mental Health Sub-Scales By Age, Sex, And Educational Status, Thomas James Boynton

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

Purpose of the Study

The topic considered in this thesis is the construction and validation of six mental health sub-scales which are based upon procedures controlling for age, sex, and educational status. Each item in a 22 item mental health scale is tested for validity by age, sex, and educational status. Six sub-scales, one for each dichotomy of the three social groups, are constructed from this procedure. The validity of these sub-scales is then tested via six different criteria of mental health. Finally, the validity of the six sub-scales, the original 22 item scale, and a related …

An Investigation Into The Possible Relationship Between Phonic Ability And Articulatory Defectiveness In University Students, Ralph W. Redel Jun 1964

An Investigation Into The Possible Relationship Between Phonic Ability And Articulatory Defectiveness In University Students, Ralph W. Redel

Masters Theses

Introduction

Background

In 1938, Travis and Rasmus commented on a particular problem in pathology. They said, "From every angle, an adult with a disorder of articulation presents a much more serious problem than a child with such a defect" (40. p. 218). Their statement is an appropriate current evaluation of the same problem. The American Speech and Hearing Association's Committee on the Midcentury White House Conference reported that the incidence of articulatory disorders was equal, 3.3% for both children and adults in the United States (1). In 1962, Dopheide found that 36 out of 2,087 of the freshman entering Western …

The Physiological Aspects Of The Piezoelectric Phenomenon And Its Application In Biologic Bone, Virgil V. Heinrich Jun 1964

The Physiological Aspects Of The Piezoelectric Phenomenon And Its Application In Biologic Bone, Virgil V. Heinrich

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The relationship between stress and bony architecture has long been recognized, but the actual cellular machanism which causes the alteration is still somewhat vague. Piezoelectric properties and bioelectric potentials have been proposed as partial answers.

It is the purpose of this investigation to better understand and correlate the relationship of electric potentials or bioelectric potentials to the formation and transformation of physiologic bone.

It is very likely that the crystallites of bone possess the physical properties that would allow them to exhibit the piezoelectric phenomenon.

In the technique of this work a direct current and a pulsating current across the …

Student's Awareness Of Covert Needs Of Patients In A General Hospital, Elizabeth Liston Hedrick Jun 1964

Student's Awareness Of Covert Needs Of Patients In A General Hospital, Elizabeth Liston Hedrick

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether an introduction course in psychiatric nursing for beginning students would increase their awareness of the covert nursing needs of the hospitalized patient.

Literature was reviewed to find out what had been written concerning covert needs, how one could discern them and to determine the need of the patient as an individual.

Using the problem solving method, a tool was prepared to test the ability to identify covert nursing problems. A situational test was developed from experiences of seven hospitalized patients. A pilot study was conducted to perfect the tool.

The sample …

A Study Of The Effect Of Varying Serum Phenylalanine Levels On Changes In Intelligence Quotient, Darlene Imai Manullang Jun 1964

A Study Of The Effect Of Varying Serum Phenylalanine Levels On Changes In Intelligence Quotient, Darlene Imai Manullang

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Data from thirty medical records of phenylketonuric children under treatment were investigated to determine at which serum phenylalanine level (0-3.9 mg. %, 4-7.9 mg %, 8-11.9 mg. %, greater than 12 mg. %) there would be the greatest increase in intelligence. The children involved in the study were divided into the following groups according to the age dietary treatment was initiated: 0 through 5 months, 6 through 11 months, 12 through 23 months, and over 2 years of age.

Among 6 patients who were placed on the diet during the first 5 months of life, it appears that the optimal …

Exposure To Parathion Effect On General Population And Asthmatics, Robert S. Ganelin, Cipriano Cueto Jr., G. Allen Mail Jun 1964

Exposure To Parathion Effect On General Population And Asthmatics, Robert S. Ganelin, Cipriano Cueto Jr., G. Allen Mail

Food and Drug Administration Papers

There has been much lay and medical concern regarding toxic effects of insecticides on the general population. In addition to direct toxic effects, it is suspected that insecticidal application has deleterious physical effects on persons with respiratory diseases. To evaluate some of these problems, the authors have attempted to quantitate actual absorption, symptoms, and laboratory evidence of intoxication in persons with varying degrees of exposure to parathion. By means of controlled observations, the respiratory effect of application of this compound on persons with bronchial asthma was also measured. The results suggest that the effect of this chemical on the general …
