Pyorrhoea is one of the best known and commonest diseases in civilization. A certain dental company is advertising that four out of five are infected by this disease. This company has been lenient in their accusation, as men who are ardent students of pyorrhoea state specifically that 90 per cent of the world’s population have it in some form or other or have symptoms which would eventually turn into pyorrhoea. Knowing this and knowing also the results and unnecessary pain and discomforts that are produced, every individual should respect and fear this disease accordingly.

The great problem facing the dental profession in obtaining successful root canal fillings is resolved into two problems:

1. That of removing the dental pulp aseptically and preparing aseptic areas for the reception of the filling material.

2. The selection and adaptation of materials which will effectively seal the apex without irritation to the underlying structures and the periapical tissues. The property of excluding moisture and bacteria must also be carefully considered.

In arranging this thesis an attempt has been made to show that by virtue of its embryology, anatomy and histology, the spleen is the better enabled to carry out its alleged functions. The discussion here presented is confined to a story of the functions of the mammalian spleen alone. The similarities in the reactions of the spleen in the various mammalia is quite evident. Experimentation and observations were carried out on the lower mammalia while only the reactions of the splenectomized humans could be observed.

Up to the year 1860 surgery and sepsis were practically synonymous. Surgical procedures, accomplished as they were without the use of antiseptics, could not, of necessity, be done with the greatest of care, for the time element was the chief factor in success. In consequence, infections and diseases, as for example, pyemia, septicemia, erysipelas and hospital gangrene were the rule rather than the exception.
