This research was undertaken to explore the possibility that urine from persons having a pathological condition might contain substances which break down protein. The two objectives of this author were:

1. To devise a means of concentrating the proteolytic activity of urine, and

2. To determine whether urine from tubercular patients has an abnormal proteolytic effect.

Plants require ten elements in appreciable quantity and several others in smaller amount for their continued and normal growth. Three of these necessary elements, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are most important because they occur in the soil in quantities which are usually small in proportion to that needed by the plants. Of these three, nitrogen is in most cases the limiting factor because of the ease with which it may be leached from the soil and comparatively large amount assimilated by plants. Without the aid of a microscope, Bichat in 1800 studied tissues of various parts of the body, and, even though he did not make any cellular sketches, his work laid the foundation for histology. Then after the announcement of the cell theory by Schleiden and Schwann in 1839, a new path opened for histological study. Leydig (1864) applied the histology of that day to the lower animals. Cajal (1906) cleared up the complicated relations of the tissues together with a complete investigation of the nervous system.
