This study has been conducted to determine the nursing experience, the advanced educational attainments, and the church and community activities of the graduates of the New England Sanitarium and Hospital School of Nursing.

In order to secure the data, questionnaires were sent to 184 of the graduates during the 10-year period, 1945 through 1954. Sixty-eight percent responded with the desired information.

Data received from this survey have been presented in this study and compared with the findings of other similar studies.

With the continued high incidence of paralytic poliomyelitis the crippling after effects of this disease will be seen for many years to come even if the number of new cases gradually decrease as effective immunization techniques are developed. Because of the high incidence of lower extremity involvement and the disproportionately high percentage of anterior tibial paralysis, it is of interest to review the methods of treatment used, in paralytic equinus heretofore and draw lessons from these cases to guide us in the management of future problems.

Enzyme systems which regulate the rate of cellular reactions are primarily composed of protein and many of these enzymatic systems influence the metabolism of less specialized proteins that form the major structural material of protoplasm. The profession of speech therapy is little more than twenty-five years old. As in any new field many beliefs are currently held without experimental corroboration. One of these concerns dentition. The claim is made by some speech therapists that missing teeth cause lisps. Other therapists and writers have doubted this belief. All carbohydrates metabolized in the body must first be phosphorylated, As a result of Lundgaard's (1930 ) and Lohmann's (1934) discoveries, the focal interest of muscle biochemistry has passed from the carbohydrate molecules to the phosphorus compounds, For glucose, the first reaction is the formation of a phosphate ester, glucose-6- phosphate, D. M. Needham (1938) found that ATP acts as a phosphorus donor, Glucose-6-phosphate may be transformed into glucose-1-phosphate or into fructose-6-phosphate. In the past few years general hypothermia has been investigated as a means of reducing the oxygen requirements of the body sufficiently to allow exclusion of the heart from the circulation and thus permit intracardiac surgery under direct vision. There is also an important group of patients whose poor physical condition precludes radical surgery of any type. If the oxygen demands of the brain and other vital organs can be sufficiently reduced by hypothermia, it is conceivable that these patients would be able to withstand the shock of reduced circulation and even peripheral vascular embarrassment for short periods of time. …

This study is an attempt to discover the mode of action and evaluate the effectivity of cyclodiathermy in the treatment of glaucoma, using the Muller electric tonometer in studies on the facility of outflow.

This series of cases represents a cross section of the advanced cases of glaucoma which were operated on by attending and resident staff at the White Memorial Hospital between January 1953, and December 1955. Otosclerosis is a frequent affliction resulting in progressive hearing loss. With the advance of ear surgery during the past 25 years various procedures have been proposed for the correction of this condition. Among their number surgical mobilization of the stapes has assumed considerable importance. In this paper, which is presented as a thesis to fulfill the requirements for the degree of Master of Science, the operation will be discussed on the basis of the literature and the author's own experiences with the procedure.

Surgery For Benign Biliary Tract Disease : An Analysis Of 310 Cases From Smaller Hospitals, Theodore E. Wade

Summary:

The results of biliary tract surgery in three small general hospitals serving suburban communities was studied. Their average daily censuses were 38, 70, and 97. Fourteen (4.5%) of 310 cases of benign biliary tract disease died after surgery. Among 219 cases of elective cholecystectomy, four patients (l.8%) died. The mortality in 1196 cases reported from small hospitals by this, and three other authors, was 3.3%. This is slightly higher than the mean mortality, 2.4% among 25 reports of surgical mortality for gall stone disease found in the literature. The maximum number of cases came to surgery …
