The purpose of this study was to identify factors that contributed to the turnover among nursing personnel of a selected hospital in a large metropolitan city. It was felt that such a study would assist in the reduction of turnover among the nursing personnel.

Other similar studies revealed that reasons for turnover among hospital nursing personnel were due to low salaries, hours of work, work loads, communications, improper placement, poor supervision, and a lack of promotional opportunities. It was also found that the younger age group had a larger turnover rate than the older age group, that hospitals with schools …

The purpose of this study is to test the vocal self-identification ability of children with functional defects of articulation as compared to children with normal speech. A study was undertaken to see if, through the use of story projective fables, data could be obtained about the change in selected sensitive psychological areas of an only child when a sibling is born.

Projective stories from the Fine Revision of the Despert Fables were used to form brief tests of the sensitive psychological areas of parental rejection/sibling rivalry, dependency and aggression/hostility. These test were given, both before and six weeks after the birth of a sibling, to fifty children from families in the Santa Clara Valley. It was the purpose of this study to determine how well colostomy patients were prepared to undertake self-care at home. Related to this goal was the secondary purpose of preparation of a basic list of instructional needs of colostomy patients. Such a list should be useful in determination of content for colostomy self-care teaching programs in hospitals.

The interview method was used in this study in order to ensure more complete returns. Twelve colostomy patients were interviewed using an interview schedule. These patients had had colostomy surgery within the last year in one of two hospitals used in the study. …

The purpose of this study was to find out of graduates from a specific Associate in Arts degree program functioned as effectively in beginning positions in nursing in the first five months following graduation as graduates from a specific three-year diploma program.

The descriptive survey method of research was used to collect data on fourteen of the twenty-one 1959 graduates from an Associate in Arts degrees program and fifteen of the eighteen graduates from the three-year diploma program for the same year.

The effect of a high unsaturated-low saturated fat diet on serum cholesterol levels were studied. Subjects were clinic patients receiving the following hypocholesterolmeic agents: triparanol (MER-29), diildothyroacetic acid (Diac), dextrothyroxine (d-T₄) and 3-methoxy-16, alpha-methyl-1,3,5, (10)-estratriene-16 beta, 17 beta-diol (Manvene or Anvene).

Fifteen hypercholesterolemic patients, eleven of whom were diabetic, were placed on diets with prescribed amounts of unsaturated fat. The caloric distribution was 40 per cent carbohydrate, 20 per cent protein, and 40 per cent fat. The level of unsaturated fat was 70 per cent of the total fat.

Although the indirect method for preparing dental castings has been in use for over forty-five years, very little information has appeared in dental literature relative to its accuracy. The development of a precise and quantitative method for determining the adaptation of wax patterns or castings was necessary before such an evaluation could be considered valid. It was felt the Mercury Micromeasurement test, devised in 1958 by Hollenback, should meet these requirements. A description of the test had been published. However, at the time the project was begun, no data had appeared in the literature.

Methods and instruments were devised particularly for this research project on the physical properties of cohesive gold, whereby the following procedures were accomplished:

1. Cohesive gold can be annealed under controlled conditions.
2. The blow delivered by an automatic spring mallet, pneumatic mallet, and Electro-Mallet can be evaluated and controlled.
3. The condensing point can be stepped in accurate and controlled increments.
4. Increments of laminated gold can be used permitting a known thickness of foil beneath the condensing point at all times.

The specter of addiction eventually involves everyone of the community. It is a three-fold problem of socio-economic, psychological, and physiological factors. The least understood is the physiological or biochemical aspect of addiction.

It has been postulated that an upset in carbohydrate metabolism may be a biochemical cause of addiction. Several avenues were employed to investigate this possible cause of addiction.

1. A diet survey was conducted and revealed a greater consumption of refined carbohydrates, confections and alcoholic beverages in addicts.

Forty-six aorto-enteric fistuiae following abdominal aorta surgery are here recorded. A number of these have never before been recorded in the literature. For the first time sixteen cases of these aorto-enteric fistulae that were subjected to surgical intervention have been tabulated. Twelve of these had definitive surgery either immediately or eventually. The definitive procedures are also tabulated.

An attempt was made to produce a fistula in dogs. Of twelve dogs, one died six months postoperatively of massive rectal hemorrhage due to an aortoduodenal fistula that followed the implantation of a Teflon vessel graft into the abdominal aorta. The cause of …

This study was conducted on one hundred full-term normal newborn infants to compare body temperatures as obtained by axilla and rectal measures and to find out which measure recorded the highest temperature. Three time periods of axillary measurement and three time periods of the three depths of rectal measure were considered. The three time periods were (1) one and one-half, (2) three, and (3) five minutes. The three depths of rectal insertion were (1) insertion of the bulb end of the thermometer just beyond the sphincter, (2) 2.5 cm., and (3) 5 cm. into the rectum.
