Surveys have shown that the incidence of total laryngectomy, surgical removal of the larynx, has increased steadily in the United States since 1947 when a total of 846 cases were reported (19, 20), to the present time when cancer registries indicate that about 4,400 new cases of cancer of the larynx are discovered annually (13). While it is estimated that in the United States at the present time there are 15,000 to 20,000 individuals who have undergone surgical removal of the larynx due to a carcinomatous condition of that organ (27), it is probable that the total population of …

The ability to monitor one's own vocal output is essential if one is to produce and maintain normal speech. Speech would become progressively defective if one were unable to detect errors in voice, articulation, or rate. The preservation and maintenance of speech require the coordination of several automatic systems in the human body. One of these systems includes the tactual-kinesthetic purpose of defining the tactual-kinesthetic role and its relation to feedback cues in the production of speech.

This study was done to test the effectiveness of a programmed textbook as a method of teaching diabetic patients at home. The textbook used was prepared from a programmed filmstrip provided by the United States Public Health Service. The study was conducted in connection with the Los Angeles County General Hospital Metabolic Clinic and the White Memorial Hospital Lipid Clinic. This study was conducted to make nursing care guides which can be used by African students of nursing in making individualized nursing care plans. The nursing problems which were met in African rural hospitals served as a basis for the nursing care guides. Data for the study were obtained through questionnaires which were airmail to ten rural hospitals in Africa. Eight of the hospitals responded to the questionnaires.

Purpose of the Study

The topic considered in this thesis is the construction and validation of six mental health sub-scales which are based upon procedures controlling for age, sex, and educational status. Each item in a 22 item mental health scale is tested for validity by age, sex, and educational status. Six sub-scales, one for each dichotomy of the three social groups, are constructed from this procedure. The validity of these sub-scales is then tested via six different criteria of mental health. The purpose of this study was to obtain physicians' opinions concerning the registered nurse's role and ideal characteristics. A review of literature was done and a pilot study was conducted. The descriptive survey method was used. The opinions of seventy-one internists on the staffs of two hospitals connected with a church related university were; obtained through use of a questionnaire. Analysis of the data was made by computer, by counts and by an item analysis. It was the purpose of this study to gain greater insights into the problems and needs of patients with artificial pacemakers. The problem was to find out in what ways the pacemaker affected the patients' manner of living and what problems they had had in adjusting to a new way of life.

In this study an experiment was done to find out the effect of talking upon subsequent oral thermometry. A need for such a study was seen in 1) the apparent indifference of nursing service personnel to possible influences of talkativeness on sublingual temperature evaluations and 2) the seeming want of experimental evidence to indicate that talking does change the sublingual temperature. The sixty-one female students who volunteered as subjects were of the health professions at a selected university. For a thirty-minute period the subjects observed the restrictions of no eating, drinking, smoking, gum-chewing, mouth-breathing or talking. Three minute control oral …
