The Reaction Of Dog Tongue To Syrijet Injections, Donald L. Peters

Tissue response toward injection by a "fluid-pressure" type apparatus, the Mizzy Syrijet, was evaluated by using dogs as the experimental animal.

The tongue was the organ of choice because it's size is sufficient to allow for several injections without overlapping tissue responses. In addition the two halves of the tongue are anatomically separated by a median raphe, providing for further isolation of injections.

The animals were injected at 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hour intervals utilizing the Syrijet on the right side of the tongue and needle on the left. Needle injection served as control for the microscopic comparison. …

A method of measuring the effectiveness of analgesics using a new instrument, known as the Algesiometer,* is described. The instrument, utilizing an electrical stimulus, produced an experimental pain when attached to the skin over the mid shaft of the tibia. The patient, who was experiencing a pathological pain, gradually increased the experimental stimulus, by turning a control rheostat, until it was equal in intensity to the pathological, or clinical, pain. The intensity of the stimulus was calculated in milliwatts and consisted of a rectangular wave pulsating direct current of approximately one millisecond duration and an interval of nineteen milliseconds.

The purpose of this study was to investigate cranial and facial bone growth in the puberal Macaca mulatta monkey over a six month period utilizing the methods of metallic implantation combined with serial cephalometric roentgenography and a bichromatic vital staining method.

The employment of the vital stains, alizarin Red S and anthracene blue, over the six month period of the study, failed to stain the actively growing bone as evidenced by gross and microscopic analysis of the undecalcified bone preparations.

Human teeth mounted in individual plaster blocks were studied to determine the actual location of the root canal filling when it appears to be exactly at the radiographic apex. The original sample consisted of 109 teeth treated during endodontic technique class by junior dental students at Loma Linda University. In the most ideal manner possible, these teeth were radiographed on a flat surface with the x-ray tube perpendicular to the film and blocked tooth.

Five dentists examined the radiographs, and each one independently listed the canals he judged filled exactly to the radiographic apex. The investigator sorted out the choices …

The nature of epithelium and the remarkable facility with which it aggressively covers granulation tissue, suggests that removal of the sulcular epithelium surrounding the extraction wound of a tooth to be replanted could promote reattachment of the periodontal tissues at a more nearly ideal coronal level. To investigate this hypothesis twenty mature teeth in five mongrel dogs were experimentally replanted. One half of them were replanted in alveoli around which the crevicular epithelium had been removed, the remaining teeth without creviculoectomy acting as controls. The primary objective of this study was to quantitatively address the three following questions:

1. Does orthodontic treatment when administered to the adolescent patient produce changes in his or her body-image and self-concept?

2. In which areas of the body does the patient experience changes in body image after orthodontic treatment?

3. What significance or value does the patient place on orthodontic treatment relative to changes in the subject's life?

In seeking answers to the above questions, a questionnaire was given to a group of 138 male and female orthodontic patients.

The purpose of this study was to determine changes that occur in the craniofacial complex, when a heavy interrupted orthopedic force is employed to retract the maxilla in the post puberal rhesus monkey. Cephalometric, histologic and anatomic examinations were utilized to substantiate the findings.

Four female rhesus monkeys were used for experimentation. Two were experimental animals and the other two controls. Cervical retraction with headgear was applied over a period of 313 days and 159 days to the two experimental animals. Forces not exceeding 2.5 lbs. were found most effective.

This study evaluates the role of the Neighborhood Health Coordinators (NHC's) within Kaiser Foundation's Comprehensive Neighborhood Health Services (CNHS) Project. This project was established in September 1967, under the provisions of the 1966 amendments to the Economic Opportunity Act, to provide and make readily available comprehensive medical care to low-income persons. In compliance with the stipulations of this Act, persons who reside in target areas, designated as depressed neighborhoods, were hired to serve as NHC's. The present research was directed toward gaining a clearer understanding of the relationships between the location of brain injury and relative auditory and visual input abilities of adults by submitting selected subjects to comparable procedures requiring the auditory and the visual input of stimuli. Two tests, the Geometric Figures Test (GFT) and the Token Test (TT), were developed as a means of obtaining measures of auditory input ability and visual input ability. The adrenal glands, located in man near the superior poles of the kidneys. were described by Eustachius in 1563, and named by him the glandulae renibus incumbentes. It was not, however, generally appreciated until about three centuries later that they were vital organs. In 1855, Thomas Addison of Guy's Hospital, London, first described a syndrome which he observed in certain of his patients, and which he associated with bilateral lesions of the adrenal glands. This thesis describes an in vivo perfusion apparatus which can continuously deliver controlled quantities of solutions to localized, contralateral intra oral areas in albino rats. Three animals were per fused on the experimental area (the mesial sulcular area of the maxillary first molar) on one side with tap water and trypan blue. Localization of the solution delivered and minimal histological changes due to the presence of the apparatus was demonstrated on these animals. Male castrated rats treated with testosterone or estradiol were given a diet containing 9, 18, or 50 per cent protein. Total lipids, lipid classes and fatty acid composition of lipid classes were determined.

Estradiol treated rats grew slower, smaller and consumed less diet. Their liver weights were larger when compared to their body weights. Moisture content of liver remained unaffected by sex hormones, but increased with the high level of protein in the diet.

Both testosterone and estradiol affected lipid metabolism; in general, the estrogenic influence was more pronounced and more predictable. Estradiol administration increased total lipids, free and esterified …

A study was made of the adaptation to dietary protein of nitrogenous components in blood and urine of rats and humans. Forty-four mature male rats were adapted to a low protein diet (10 per cent casein diet) for three weeks before they were divided into two groups. Four rats were then killed for a control, and twenty of the remaining rats were switched to a high protein diet (40 per cent casein diet) and the other twenty continued to be fed the low protein diet. A questionnaire on drinking behavior and attitudes was administered to 292 delinquent youth confined in youth detention homes in St. Anthony, Idaho, and Ogden, Utah, and to 466 students i n the secondary schools of the Pocatello. School District, Pocatello, Idaho.

Using a Chi Square analysis, comparisons were made of responses between the delinquent and non-delinquent groups to questions regarding first drinking experience, present drinking behavior, attitudes toward drinking, criminal acts while drinking alcoholic beverages, age, race, sex, family income, population of area lived in, with whom the students lived, and parents' drinking behavior. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the sites of overwintering of Erwinia amylovora (Burrill) Winslow et al. outside of living tissue in Utah. Bacterial isolates were taken from the surfaces of blighted twigs and mummified fruits remaining on the tree; also from internal dead tissue of blighted twigs and mummies, and from soil beneath blighted trees. Each isolate was tested for agglutination with antiserum specific for Erwina amylovora, susceptibility to Erwinia amylovora bacteriophage, production of symptoms in pear seedlings and development of bacterial ooze on green pears.

Both virulent and avirulent isolates were taken from all sites tested. …

Physical Education teachers do not have a good knowledge of the state's liability law, nor are they aware of the liability they are open to.

Where opportunity was afforded, teachers were anxious to place the responsibility for their actions on someone of a higher position. This could be attributed to the fact that district and state administrators have not made an awareness of our new law.

The cost of fresh and dehydrated vegetables was studied in terms of initial cost and labor cost. Three institution kitchens were used: Logan Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Hospital, Logan Senior High School, and the High Rise Cafeteria at Utah State University. Beans, celery, onions, peas, green peppers, diced potatoes, shredded potatoes, sliced potatoes, and whipped potatoes were included in the research.

Fresh vegetables were found to have lower initial cost. Labor costs were lower for dehydrated vegetables. In the preparation of 25 pounds of vegetables the total cost of dehydrated vegetables was less than that of fresh …

Lamb pregastric (PGE) and gastric extracts (GE) have been evaluated for their role in Italian cheese flavor production. Both have been shown to produce increases in free fatty acids and in non-protein-nitrogen during incubation with milkfat and casein substrates as well as in cheese substrates. Gastric lipase and cathepsins are considered to be the additional active agents in GE. Parmesan cheese manufactured with PGE and GE added to the curd was superior in flavor when both were employed, and either extract alone was better than the uninoculated control. Induction of hepatic microsomal hydroxylative enzymes is an important aspect of detoxication of fat-soluble toxicants. The magnitude of induction depends on numerous factors, such as the nature and dose of toxicant as well as dietary factors.
