The method of principal components may be used to reduce a large quantity of data for an individual into a single statistic, a growth index, indicative of overall facial growth, and to make a determination of the relative contribution of each variable, as well as the genotype and the environment, to the variation between individuals, When this method is applied to four consecutive years of cephalometric and anthropometric data from each of 95 children, consisting of Caucasian and Negro monozygotic twins, like-sexed dizygotic twins, and their siblings of both sexes, it discloses that:

This paper will review the literature on amphetamine abuse after which I will discuss some implications for treatment. I will propose an empirical study that should help clarify a major assumption that is apparent in the literature. This study will then point out the possibility of a method of treatment that can be effective in helping amphetamine abusers.

The inducible, NAD-linked glycerol dehydrogenase (E.C. 1.1.1.6) of a guanine requiring mutant of A. aerogenes has been purified to homogeneity. The molecular weight of the pure enzyme was found to be 3.4 x 10⁵ daltons. The sedimentation coefficient of the enzyme was 10.7 x 10^-13 sec.^-1. The diffusion constant was 3.07 x 10^-7 cm²/sec.

The partial specific volume calculated from the amino acid composition was 0.72 ml/g. The following kinetic parameters were determined; K_m glycerol, 2.4 x 10^-3 m, K_m NAD, 2.8 x 10^-4 M, K_m dihydroxyacetone, 5.1 …

Richet and Portier in 1902 first described systemic anaphylaxis while investigating the immunization of dogs to the toxic substance of Actinaria (sea anemone). They noticed that the administration of a small dose (0.1 ml) of this toxic material to animals injected twenty-two days previously with a single sublethal toxin dose often resulted in the immediate death of the animal. They called this phenomenon anaphylaxis to indicate a reaction opposite in effect to prophylaxis. At about the same time as Richet's findings were being published, Theobald Smith, working independently, also discovered anaphylaxis by observing the phenomenon in guinea pigs while assaying …

The validity of The Oral Nasal Acoustic Ratio (Tonar) System as a means of obtaining data relevant to perceived nasality was established by comparing forward and backward play scale values with nasal/oral acoustic ratios computed by Tonar.

The acoustic characteristics of orally and nasally emitted signals and their relative contributions to the total speech signal were analyzed and considered within the framework of oral and nasal acoustic masking.

Kinetic Studies Of The Cell Elongation Phenomenon In Etiolated Pisum Stem Segments, Grant M. Barkley

The short-term growth response of etiolated pea stem segments (Pisum sativum L., var. Alaska) was investigated using a high-resolution growth recording device. The immediate effect of treatment with indoleacetic acid (IAA) is an inhibition of growth. This inhibition lasts about 10 minutes and then the rate of elongation rises abruptly to a new steady rate about 4 times the rate of elongation before auxin treatment. This rapid steady rate of elongation, however, continues for only about 22 minutes before declining suddenly to a lower steady rate of growth about 2 times the rate of elongation before the addition of auxin. …

A practical method of research on cadaver specimen heads was designed from a systematic review of the existing literature in order to differentiate from conjecture the experimental proof of the axes of rotation of the condyles during mandibular border movements.

An anatomo-physiological study on eight human cadaver heads, using the gnathologic technique of Dr. R. Lee for recording mandibular movements, was done to study the intimate mechanism of the temporomandibular joints, with the hope of contributing support to this new method of recording.

Previous studies in the Lome Linda University laboratory showed that obese subjects on an exercise program lost approximately one pound more per week as compared to a non-exercise group. Energy expenditure calculations of the exercise did not account for the total caloric deficit required to lose the additional pound. The present study was designed to investigate changes in BMR and metabolic rate with time for normal weight and overweight subjects involved in a practical exercise program. The relationship of changes in BMR and metabolic rate in coping with the problems of obesity were also studied.

Utilizing an extra-oral approach and sterile technique, left mandibular ostectomy was performed on five miniature pigs. The segment removed was 3 cm long and included the inferior border, mandibular canal and, in some cases, apices of a molar tooth.

Bone and plaster grafts (one solid and one canalized of each) were used to fill these defects. The fifth was left with no graft.

The objective was to learn the effect of each of these procedures on regeneration of the mandibular nerve across the defect. It was hypothesized that canals through the grafts would facilitate regeneration.

The effect of a single viewing of a patient-counseling film and a single instruction by a hygienist in producing changes in the oral hygiene of a group of school children 12 to 13 years of age was investigated. The subjects were divided into three experimental groups and one control group of twenty-one each.

During the data collection period only six of the eight patients who met the criteria for this study were available. This was a historical study of past ideas, beliefs, and practices in the nursing care of the normal newborn infant in the hospital nursery. The study covered the years 1930 to 1965 and was divided into four cross sections, namely, 1930 to 1935, 1940 to 1945, 1950 to 1955, and 1960 to 1965.

The primary sources used in this study consisted of one hundred infant medical records which were made available by a 382-bed, private, general hospital located in a Los Angeles suburb. One procedure manual used in this hospital during the years 1944-1955 qualified as a primary source. Personal …

Pins of several types are currently used in several aspects of restorative and periodontal dentistry. In some cases there may be unintentional perforation of the dental pulp. In other cases it may be advantageous to purposely perforate the pulp for added retention. A manual was prepared and evaluated for use by non-professional personnel in community nutrition education. Instruction and suggestions were given for organizing these classes and techniques outlined for food demonstrations. Material was written for lectures and tests on eight nutrition topics, with visual aid suggestions, recipes and "chatter" to accompany the recipes.

The material was tested by presenting three of the eight topics before audiences. Volunteer non-professional teacher-demonstrators gave the presentations which were evaluated by test scores from the audiences, by score forms from each teacher-demonstrator, and by evaluation sheets from the advisory committee.
