Training in speech sound discrimination may be an important part of some speech therapy and language development programs. In order to determine the nature of the training required, it is necessary to evaluate an individual's ability to discriminate between speech sounds. A variety of tests have been designed for this purpose. A review of the tests indicates that in one type of test the responses are based on the concepts "same" and "different". The investigator found several children with vocal nodules in the schools he served. A review of the literature revealed that vocal abuse is the commonly considered etiology of vocal nodules. Vocal abuse did not fit several of the children who tended to be quiet and withdrawn. A further review of the literature was instituted in an attempt to find some feature of commonality between quiet children and noisy children which could explain why quiet children develop vocal nodules. Several authors discussed functional voice disorders as the result of personality problems. Few, however, related their conclusions directly to vocal nodules. The …

Shock Intensity And Task Difficulty As Determiners Of Avoidance And Escape Learning In Rats, Arthur Louis

Thirty-six naive female hooded rats were divided randomly into three groups and tested in an instrumental escape and avoidance learning situation involving three degrees of task difficulty. Each group was also randomly subdivided into four subgroups, each of which underwent a different shock intensity level. The purpose of this study was to test the Yorkes-Dodson law which states that (a) there is an optimal level of punishment intensity for any given task (or an inverted-U curve relating shock intensity and performance) and (b) this optimal intensity decreases as task difficulty increases. The results supported (a) but not (b).

Forty-eight male and 48 female grade 12 high school students were assigned in groups of 8 to a 2 (sex of S X 3 (treatment) X 2 (sex of E) factorial design experiment. Each S was presented with a finger maze task under one of three experimental treatments: censure-nothing with S being told “WRONG” for an incorrect response, nothing for a correct response; reward-nothing, with S being told “CORRECT” for a correct response, nothing for an incorrect response; nothing-nothing, with Ss being told nothing for either a correct or incorrect response. Language assessment of children is an essential task of the speech clinician and many studies have been concerned with the validity of the data gathered. Few studies, however, have investigated examiner variability as a possible source of deviation in language assessment. This study was designed to evaluate and compare the amount of verbal output which children with normal language use when examined by two different examiners when the examiners are in their most comfortable setting.

The general purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of demographic, personality and nonverbal perception variables to communication sensitivity. The examination concerned the relative linearity or non-linearity and the statistical significance of each relationship. The specific purpose of this study was to establish the concurrent validity of the UNM Conversation Self-Report Inventory. The Conversation Inventory was used as the measure of communication sensitivity in this study. The demographic variables were measured by the Demographic Questionnaire designed by this author. The Biodegradability Of Detergents And The Effects Of Biodegradable Detergents Upon Root Elongation Of Certain Plants, Nancy Lou Bishop

The effects of three biodegradable detergents upon root elongation of Cucumis sativus and Avena sativa was determined. All three detergents inhibit root elongation; the degree of inhibition depends on the brand of detergent and the species tested. Contact of the detergents with a sandy-loam results in reversal of inhibition of root elongation; the degree of reversal varies with detergent and species. However, reversal after 48 hours contact with soil does not appear to be due to degradation by microorganisms. Effects of aeration and of pH on test solutions are discussed.

The comparative effectiveness of two speech correction approaches was studied in the therapeutic situation (within the program and the setting of the public school). The Van Riper adult-directed auditory stimulation method, used by many speech therapists today, was compared with a self-directed and modified Backus and Beasley approach to sound correction. The problem resolved was: Which method will be most effective in helping first and second grade children acquire adequate articulation skills?
