[From the Discussion] In summary, we have shown that prostaglandin E1, when injected in the rabbit knee produces synovitis and cartilage matrix degradation. The finding that salicylate cannot prevent this degeneration whereas chloroquine can., is most likely due to their different mechanisms of action in this system. Whereas chloroquine's ability to stabilize membranes is protective int his experiment, salicylate's ability to prevent the biosynthesis of prostaglandins is by passed and therefore is not.

Previous investigations of masking have established that the action of the masking tone spreads upward in frequency, creating significantly more masking (threshold shift) above the masker frequency than below. It was the purpose of this study to investigate the masking pattern produced by high frequency pure tones, heretofore uninvestigated.

Masking patterns were obtained for nine normal hearing young adults utilizing the method of adjustment. The masking produced by an 11000 Hz pure tone of 40 dB sensation level was measured at three frequencies above and three frequencies below the masker frequency. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the nutritive value of ogi, which is the national weaning food in Nigeria, and to supplement it with indigenous foods that are easily produced in Nigeria, available in the local market, locally used, and within the economic capacity of the people. The protein content of corn and ogi was determined by the Kjeldahl method and the amino acid content was determined by ionexchange chromatography. The quality of the foods was evaluated by the rat growth method and the protein efficiency ratio (PER).

Hearing aid manufacturers commonly engineer automatic gain control (AGC) circuits which are aimed at reducing sound tolerance problems and improving speech intelligibility among wearers. The most common type of AGC engineered is one utilizing a fast attack time. The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of both fast and slow attack times on the intelligibility of speech. Twenty-four normal hearing subjects listened to sixty pre-recorded sentences through two types of hearing aid circuits. A computer-based medical information system was created responsive to the needs and objectives of the spinal cord injury rehabilitation program at the Medical University of South Carolina. The system utilizes the Multi-purpose Information Processor program series. The system was developed via the design of data collection forms and the writing of programs for data entry, record generation, and analytic reports. A Reference Manual was written to document system operation.

This paper presents a study of comparative achievement of practical nurses who have progressed on the career ladder through the use of challenging examination with those in core curriculum. Questionnaires and site evaluations determined the more effective method of career mobility. A core program with minimum expectations for the practical and associate degree nurse was developed.

Recommendations included evaluation of the program and additional study to develop career mobility for the associate degree nurse.

Interactions Of Cardiac Glycosides With Na+K+ -Atpase Prepared From Several Guinea Pig And Rat Tissues, Sylvia Aveline Braddon

Interactions between five different cardiac glycosides, digitoxin, cymarol, convallatoxol, digoxin and ouabain, and Na+K+-ATPase from guinea pig heart, kidney, brain and rat heart and brain have been studied. Concentrations of glycosides required for 50% inhibition of the enzyme (I50) have been determined at various concentrations of K+. The binding of the glycosides to the enzyme preparations was studied using tritiated glycosides. ATP, Mg2+, and Na+ were required for specific binding. Through the use of Scatchard plots, a high affinity binding site was demonstrated for each guinea pig enzyme preparation, and the association constants (Ka) were measured for each of the …

This question can be answered only by those who are aware of the problems of overpopulation and characteristics of slow learners that directly influence childbearing. Population education, which is being promoted by persons alarmed by rapid population expansion, is an area in which a great many subject matter fields can share responsibility. It appears that home economics can make a unique contribution through teaching family planning.

A computerized system for instruction and diagnosis of clinical electrolyte and acid-base disorders has been implemented on a PDP-8/e minicomputer at the Medical University of South Carolina. The program is designed for use by persons at various stages of medical training: student, house staff, and clinician. This system not only aids the physician in making his diagnosis, but also serves as a means of educational instruction in acid-base physiology for the student. The Relationship Of Selected Personality Factors To The Progress Made During Speech Therapy By Elementary Children With Articulation Errors, Sandra Aubrey St. Mary

This paper presents a study of the relationship between personality factors and improvement in articulation by eleven children. A personality test and an articulation test were given, followed by eight weeks of therapy. The percentage of change in articulation scores and personality test scores were divided into high and low groups, entered in 2 x 2 Contingency Tables and submitted to the X² statistic, with a .05 level of confidence resulting.

Recommendations included additional research with a larger number of children.

A plan has been devised to upgrade the general health of the people and suggestions made for an extension of the original research project.

The present study investigated Maslow's assertion that individuals who were insecure and dominant would express their insecurity in a different manner than those individuals who were insecure and submissive. The amount of time spent on a puzzle solving task was used as an index of the expression of insecurity. It was hypothesized that there would be a significant interaction of security and dominance on the amount of time spent on the puzzle solving task, with the insecure-dominant group demonstrating more persistence than the insecure-submissive group at the task.
