Two series of experiments were conducted in order to determine the effects of diet on neutrophilic phagocytosis. The first series was designed to determine the effects of varying amounts of oral glucose on phagocytosis. Blood samples from 6 to 8 subjects were drawn at fasting, and at various time periods following ingestion of 12.5, 25, 50, 75, and 100 grams of glucose. In the second series of experiments, blood samples were taken from 11 subjects after an overnight fast and 2 hours following ingestion of one of 4 different liquid diets, which included the following: the meal (I), consisting of …

Using the principles of programmed instruction, a motor skill program was designed to instruct a nonprofessional how to teach a child to make a speech sound, specifically the phoneme /th/ (voiceless) in isolation.

A cognitive program describing the speech mechanism and act was also developed to be used in conjunction with the motor skill program.

These programs were pretested, then tested using 15 nursing attendants (aides) as subjects. Their presentation was compared to methods used by professionally trained clinicians. A problem common to all of the full-banded orthodontic techniques currently in use is the delivery of an optimum force to each tooth without disrupting the forces on other teeth. This problem becomes especially acute during finishing. It arises out of Newton's third law, which states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Thus, in full-banded techniques, a force on one tooth gives rise to generally undesirable reactive forces on other teeth in its vicinity.

This descriptive exploratory study was designed to identify a method for determining the most consistent extrathoracic landmark for measuring the zero reference point of central venous pressure in subjects with hyperinflation lung disease.

The primary purpose of this study was to find a method to determine if the external reference point that is currently being used on patients with hyperinflation lung disease represents the true zero point of central venous pressure.

To provide information of the effect of knee length compression stockings and foot exercise on venous blood velocity, an exploratory pilot study was conducted. An additional purpose of the investigation was to evaluate the noninvasive doppler ultrasonic flowmeter as a data collecting tool.

Fourteen volunteer female subjects, ages 40 to 80, met the designated criteria and were tested. During the half-hour baseline period and throughout the study at specified intervals, one-minute venous velocity tracings were recorded at the femoral vein with the doppler flow-meter. This thesis will describe and interpret the development of this Relief Society wheat storage program from its inception in 1876 to 1940 when the program was transferred to the General Church Welfare Committee. Emphasis will be placed on the sisters' attempts to store grain and the problems they encountered. The thesis will also discuss the effects of outside forces on the program and the different ways the sisters used the grain. The final chapter will deal with the relationship between the movement and the history of the Relief Society and its parent organization, the Mormon Church.

Previous research has established that when two speech signals are presented dichotically, normal listeners tend to report those stimuli presented to the right ear more accurately than those presented to the left. This has generally been interpreted as reflecting the primacy of contralateral auditory pathways and left hemisphere dominance for language function. The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the effect of preoperative individual interviews in addition to the regular group and incidental preoperative teaching, on preoperative and postoperative stress. This effect was measured by the Multiple Affect Adjective Check List (MAACL), number of postoperative analgesics, and number of postoperative catheterizations for urinary retention.

The theoretical perspective represents a merging of a formal analysis as suggested by Georg Simmel and Erving Goffman and an interactional emphasis upon reciprocity of actions as proposed by Herbert Blumer. The virulent T-even bacteriophages have been studied the most and have been shown to be responsible for the induction of a number of new, virus-specific enzymes that are necessary for successful phage growth. In addition, the activity of other host enzymes present prior to infection has been found to be increased by T-even infection. This paper describes 39 cases of oral verrucous carcinoma. This study reports on 20 cases from the San Diego Tumor Group and 19 cases from the Oral Pathology Service which showed the characteristic features of verrucous carcinoma. Twenty three patients were men and 16 were women. In the majority of the cases the lesion was exophytic and had a papillary surface. The buccal mucosa and gingiva were the sites most frequently involved. The characteristic histologic pattern consisted of keratinized well-differentiated epithelium exhibiting irregular folds. Nonendodontically treated roots were submerged 1.5 to 2.0 mm. below the alveolar crest in three dogs. Twelve roots were treated in this manner. Regeneration of alveolar bone can be seen in three weeks with complete bone coverage in five weeks. A complete lamina dura can be seen around the amputated roots.

Bone failed to regenerate over two of the twelve roots. In one case there was delayed healing due to the early loss of some sutures. A sinus tract developed connecting the oral environment with the contents of the pulp. This led to bone resorption and a necrotic pulp. In …

A preliminary light microscopic study of the mouse hind limb revealed a group of about 20 Pacinian corpuscles extending from the mid-region of the fibula to the tibio-fibular fusion strategically located for the possible sensing of bone-transmitted vibration.

The fine structure of the corpuscles is described in four stages: primordial or prenatal (19 and 20 days); early differentiation (1-8 days postnatal); differentiated corpuscle (9, 10, 12, 14 and 21 days postnatal); and adult (28 days old).

A pair of Negro monozygotic affected twins were studied using the other 10 non-affected members of the family as a control to minimize the environmental and hereditary factors. Chrome cobalt alloy orthodontic wire may be heat treated to increase spring performance and efficiency. This study was designed to quantify the effects that several heat treatment temperatures have upon the ability of .016" x .022" type 1 chrome cobalt wire to resist permanent deformation. In addition, the changes in resistance to permanent deformation due to heat treatment at 900° F were studied in .018" stainless steel wire and chrome cobalt wire of all four tempers.

A histological comparison of forty-four human teeth in which vital partial pulpectomies were performed, and the pulp stumps covered with dycal, N-2 and ZOE was carried out. The time interval at which the teeth were extracted for study was ten, twelve and fourteen weeks. These teeth were on patients twelve through seventeen years of age and were to he extracted for orthodontic purposes. The teeth were caries free, vital and asymptomatic. In this study a lateral transcranial oblique TMJ radiographic series and a psychometric test were used in the initial diagnosis of twenty four patients presenting with pain and dysfunction of the TMJ area. It was found that the two diagnostic tests could be done practically in the dental office. The results of the two tests combined with history, and clinical findings gave the doctor the ability to make a more discriminating diagnosis.
