This study was undertaken to investigate the contribution of carbon dioxide to respiratory control made by the carotid bodies and vagus nerves. Small eupneically breathing dogs, anesthetized with IV ketamine HCL were subjected to inspired CO2 concentrations of 3% while recording simultaneously tidal volume, inspiratory and expiratory airflow rates, and single neuron activity in or near the ventral respiratory group. The burst activity of the ventral respiratory group neuron was considered to be representative of the final integrated motor output of the brain stem respiratory complex. Lite Change And Illness In A Group O! Women Religious In The Midwest From March 11 1978, Through March 1, 1979, Ann Mangelsdorf

Theses

Four hundred twenty-five women religious from one order, residing in the midwestern states of Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, Texas and Louisiana, were mailed a questionnaire designed to determine the amount of stress experienced in one year, and the amount of illness suffered by those same persona during the same time period. Two hundred fourteen sisters responded to the questionnaire. Analysis of data by age groups revealed positive correlations between life stress and illness. Comparison of illness score between older and younger sisters showed no significant differences. Young sister tended to have high stress and illness scores, whereas older sisters had lower …

In most hospitals today, plastic devices are replacing the traditional metal, glass and rubber. The increased use of polymeric materials as implanted prosthetic devices, catheters, disposable equipment and for the administration of blood, intravenous fluids and drugs has been widely accepted by the medical profession. This present study was designed to evaluate different types of plastics for potential use as large volume parenteral containers. Using several different therapeutic agents, a variety of plastic containers were examined for the possibility of the occurrence of drug-plastic interactions. On December 7, 1972, a hearing was held in Washington, D.C. on the use and abuse of antimicrobials. Senator Gaylor Nelson of the Sub-committee on the Monopoly of the Select Committee on Small Business stated, "Antibiotics are among the most frequently prescribed drugs in this country exceeded only by the psychoactive drugs." Dr. Charles C. Edwards, former Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, recognized that a problem existed and recommended the establishment of a National Task Force on the clinical use of antimicrobials (Kunin, et al., 1973).

Prolactin secretion following the injection of thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) was characterized in unanesthetized freely moving female rats at various times during the estrus cycle. Pituitary responses to TRH were also studied using prepubertal and ovariectomized animal models. Subsequent experiments examined the involvement of ovarian steroids and dopamine in the pituitary response to TRH. Initial studies determined the range of TRH doses that elicited minimal through maximal elevations in prolactin secretion in prepubertal, ovariectomized, and mature intact animals in estrus and diestrus. Dose response studies demonstrated that increases in prolactin secretion occurred with increasing amounts of TRH in all animals. …

Biofeedback Treatment Of A Drug Induced Tremor, Ralph Nitta

Two subjects exhibiting drug-induced hand tremor received EMG feedback from electrode sites above the forearm extensor muscles . EMG feedback resulted in reductions in muscle potentials for both subjects. However, self-report measures of tremor severity showed only general improvement in Subject l and little or no improvement in Subject 2. Behavioral measures of hand steadiness taken immediately after each treatment session showed slight changes across treatment conditions for both subjects. As indicated by a rapid increase in EMG measures during reversal, treatment effects appear transitory.

The major purpose of this study was to correlate certain personal characteristics of mothers and their offspring with the occurrence of toxoplasmosis serum antibodies in these women. As a byproduct, we determined the prevalence and incidence of toxoplasmosis in a particular subgroup of women in the Stockton, California area of San Joaquin County.

We had also hoped to provide early diagnostic services and follow up for any infected infants that we encountered. Unfortunately, follow up on these infants has been difficult largely due to the migrant habits of this particular group of seasonal farm workers. For these reasons this study …

The nonpolymeric high molecular weight substances such as lanolin alcohol, stearyl alcohol, and cetyl alcohol have been investigated for their film-forming potential. Furthermore, the application of this potential in the design of topical drug-delivery systems has also been explored. The utilization of such film-forming systems may offer certain unique advantages not associated with the polymeric systems.

Stearyl alcohol and cetyl alcohol do not form films of acceptable integrity. Lanolin alcohol forms thin films capable of being isolated. Inclusion of appropriate amounts of ethyl cellulose and propylene glycol or hexadecyl alcohol in lanolin alcohol was found to improve the integrity, hardness …

Since the time of the introduction of the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) into medical research, several neuropharmacological studies have been performed on these animals which have been unrelated to their cardiovascular systems. A few of these studies have indicated possible abnormalities in the dopaminergic systems of SHR. Therefore the present study was undertaken to examine more closely the sensitivity of SHR to stimulation of their dopamine (DA) receptors.
