Study Of The Relationship Between Maternal Nutrition And Neonatal Iron Status Using The Rat As An Animal Model, Sunil G. Anaokar

This study was designed to develop an animal model, using rats, to study the relationship between the iron concentration of maternal diet during lactation and maternal iron status, the effect of iron and ascorbic acid supplements on the iron content of maternal milk and the relationship between the iron content of maternal milk and neonatal iron status.

Forty pregnant and thirteen non-pregnant female albino rats were obtained at the age of 77 days, and fed a control diet containing 250 ppm iron as ferrous sulfate.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of fixed-ratio and fixed-interval schedules of reinforcement on generalization gradients. The subjects were four female rats from the Fischer strain. All subjects v/ere conditioned in the presence of a 2000 hz tone to press the bar for reinforcement. Each subject was then trained to one of the following-schedules of reinforcement: FR-5, FR-30, FI-5, or FI-30. After maintenance on this terminal schedule for three days the subjects were tested for generalization. The generalization test consisted of variations in the frequency of the original SD. Time-Related Changes In Rat Androgen Binding Protein Following A Sterilizing Dose Of 3-Chloro-1, 2-Propanediol, Shirley J. Stein

Androgen binding protein (ABP) is produced by the Sertoli cell, regulated by FSH and androgens, secreted into the testicular fluid, and transported into the caput epididymis where it is thought to play a role in sperm maturation. In this study, the response of ABP to a lesion created chemically by administration of a single, oral 60 mg/kg dose of alpha-chlorohydrin was examined in ninety day old male rats. Total testicular ABP content increased progressively for four days after treatment and there after declined whereas, epididymal ABP concentration decreased immediately. Pathological tongue thrust (reverse swallowing) has been linked to malocclusion, articulation problems, difficulty in eating, and excessive drooling. Observable tongue thrust in a 10-year-old severely retarded male was modified during lunch using a contingent pushback procedure. Comparison of baseline and treatment data collected by the partial interval method showed a significant reduction in tongue thrust and food fallout and a substantial increase in observed chewing. Results indicated the possibility that an operant approach to treatment can be effective in the modification of this physiological response.

This study was designed to explore the relationships between the physio-anatomical structure of the post-laryngectomee and quality of esophageal speech. An attempt was also made to correlate radiation and radical neck procedures with quality of esophageal speech.

A videofluoroscopic examination of the post-laryngectomized site was performed while 18 subjects read a short passage. The observations from each examination were evaluated by a board certified radiologist. The passage, recorded on tape, was rated by 18 judges for quality on a scale from one to seven and seven specific factors of the esophageal speech rated on their contribution to the overall score …

Psychological and physiological effects of nitrous oxide resemble those of eight other drug categories. Lipid solubility or hydrate microcrystal theories correlate behavioral measures with measurable parameters of the molecule N₂O. N₂O, a spindle poison, halts mitosis in metaphase, producing widespread physiological consequences. N₂O affects the microtubules of the spindle in a number of specific ways. Microtubules are utilized in other parts of eukaryotic cells, in a wide variety of functions. In neurons, microtubules build and maintain dendritic sensory processes. Ear Lateralization For Time Compressed Rhymed Word Sequences: Primacy And Recency Effects, Janet Lee Patterson

Primacy and recency effects for lateralized time compressed rhyme sequences were investigated. Subjects were forty normal hearing, right handed, young adult listeners. Stimuli were 0% and 60% time compressed five word rhyme sequences presented with no masking and contralateral multitalker masking. Item errors and order errors were counted for each position in the rhyme word sequences. A series of analyses of variance were computed for paired differences of positions in the sequences for each ear and error type to assess differential primacy and recency effects.

Pancreatic juice was collected from rabbits treated for seven days with reserpine and from untreated controls. In the treated animals the volume of pancreatic juice secreted, the flow rate and the bicarbonate output were all significantly less, while the total protein concentration, the amylase activity and the calcium concentration of the juice were all significantly elevated. This elevation in the protein concentration was due to increased amounts of protein and decreased amounts of water. The McLeod erythrocyte is characterized by a weak Kell antigenicity, lack of Kx antigen, and an abnormal cell morphology. These properties are shared by the prepositus, Hugh McLeod, and male children afflicted by type II chronic granulomatous disease. X-linked chronic granulomatous disease involves the inability of affected leukocytes to digest phagocytized bacteria leading to premature death. Prior studies have shown the McLeod erythrocyte membrane to be not only antigenically abnormal, but also exhibit an abnormal acanthocytic shape and decreased water permeability. These properties were found to be independent of the membrane phospholipid composition, cholesterol/phospholipid ratio, and microviscosity. The decreased water …

A two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic technique was developed for the detection of unique tumor-associated proteins in urine of patients with transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the urinary bladder. This technique yielded high resolution of polypeptides in the urine of cancer patients. Urine was chosen as a source of tumor-associated components because the location of the tum or should release already solublized tum or substances in to the urine.
