A Survey Of Carryover Practices Of Public School Clinicians In Oregon, Joan Marie Cranmer Polson

Clinicians report that carryover management is one of the most difficult and time consuming problems they face (Johnson, 1972) yet the literature offers little data to assist clinicians in determining what methodologies should be used and which are effective in facilitating carryover. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the type of methodologies utilized by public school clinicians in Oregon to facilitate carryover with clients originally diagnosed as having articulation disorders. A secondary question dealt with the perceived effectiveness of these methodologies.

Normative Data On The Auditory Memory Test Battery, Mary Clare Mountain

This study examined the means and standard deviations for the Auditory Memory Test Battery (Burford, 1976) using a sample of normal second, third, and fourth grade children. The study also compared span and sequence scores, low and high SES scores, and an individual's test scores with teacher judgment of intelligence group. A brief examination of the AMTB as used with LD children was also performed but not included in the statistical analysis.

The Process Of Short-Term Psychotherapy With Mentally Deficient Adults, Joan Emily Carpenter

This paper explores the process of individual short-term ego-supportive psychotherapy with mentally deficient adults. The literature on clinical research, case studies, process research, short-term psychotherapy, and therapy with the mentally retarded is selectively reviewed. Four case studies are presented with clients at the Portland Habilitation Center, a sheltered workshop which trains mentally deficient adults in socialization, practical living, and job skills. Finally, the case studies are discussed in terms of the selected literature.

In 1958 Stephen E. Toulmin wrote of inadequacies of formal logic and proposed a new field-dependent approach to the analysis of arguments. Despite a generally negative response to his proposal from formal logicians, Toulmin's model for the laying out of arguments for analysis was subsequently appropriated by several speech communication textbook writers. In some textbooks, the Toulmin model has become successor to the syllogism as the paradigm of logical argument. Yet, perhaps due to their seemingly uncritical acceptance of Toulmin's approach there appears to be serious disagreement and confusion among speech communication professionals about the nature and applications of the …

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between adjustment to life-event stressors and selected psycho-social variables. Recent research has consistently identified an etiological link between stressful life-events and physical and/or emotional disorders. It has often been noted, however, that exposure to seemingly identical stressors results in varying levels of adjustment among individuals. Lazarus (1966, 1967, 1971, 1974) has proposed that variations in stress responses are attributable to differences relative to the implicated individual's appraised threat from the stressor. This study examined the relative effectiveness of Rational Behavior Therapy and a waiting-list control condition for reducing the frequencies and intensities of anger of inmates. The sample consisted of 46 adult male inmates who attained elevated psychopathic deviate scale scores on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, and who expressed a desire to join an anger treatment group. The subjects in the treatment condition were exposed to fifteen group sessions of Rational Behavior Therapy, over an eightweek period. The experiment was an attempt to increase proper head posture using automated music as a reinforcer and to determine if this behavior would generalize to another setting.

Two cerebral palsy and mentally retarded subjects participated. Subject 1 was 24-year-old female, while Subject 2 was a 17-year-old male.

The two conditions included in this study were Baseline (no-music), and Treatment (music contingent on proper head posture). Generalization (no-music) was assessed throughout all experimental conditions. Both subjects wore the mercury-switch head apparatus during Baseline, Treatment and Generalization sessions.

Speculation: In the fetal lamb during prolonged intrauterine hypoxia, total and regional cerebral blood flows increase to the same extent without evidence of preferential shunting to critical brainstem or subcortical areas. Neuropathologic studies have indicated relative sparing of these areas during similar animal experimental or human neonatal conditions. This suggests that the pattern of hypoxic ischemic insult to the neonatal central nervous system associated with asphyxia may differ from that produced by hypoxia alone. In addition, during asphyxia these pathologic changes may result primarily from hypotension and decreased regional cerebral blood flow, or from regional metabolic derangements …

The purpose of this study was to determine how well a group of ten men and eight women who attended one of four dinners could estimate measured and weighed portions of ten test foods by a 24-hour dietary recall over the telephone, with and without a food model book.

A paired t-test indicated that there was no statistically significant difference between the 24-hour dietary recalls estimated by the total group with and without the food model book. The purpose of this study was to compare the proportion of women in the experimental group who had a successful breastfeeding experience following post-discharge nursing intervention with the proportion of women in the control group who had a successful breastfeeding experience without nursing intervention. A multienzyme complex contained in Bakers' yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) which synthesizes CoA has been named the coenzyme A-synthesizing protein complex (CoA-SPC). The CoA-SPC has been shown to be insoluble in the crude Bakers' yeast cell lysate formed by exposing the yeast cell to ether and dry ice. Only after solubilization has this multienzyme complex been shown to catalyze the formation of bound dephospho-CoA utilizing the substrates adenosine triphosphate, D-pantothenic acid and L-cysteine. A low molecular weight component or components of the soluble fraction of the yeast cell and chloride ion appears to be responsible for the solubilization of CoA-SPC. This …

Numerous authors in the field of dance therapy have proposed that dance movement employed as a psychotherapeutic tool yields positive gains in mental health for participants. Self concept is frequently cited as the mechanism affecting these gains. In order to explore the relationship of dance movement alone to self concept fifteen college women were tested with the Tennessee Self Concept Scale before and after participation in a course of dance with those of nineteen women enrolled in lower division psychology courses. An analysis of covariance showed no significant changes in self concept scores in either group. It was concluded that …

The null hypothesis of this study stated that there would be no significant difference (α=.05) in the change in smoking behavior following a teaching intervention to discourage smoking in pregnant women between those who completed a values clarifying strategy prior to the intervention and those who did not. Forty subjects were randomly assigned 20 to an experimental group and 20 to a control group. Both groups completed a pretest questionnaire concerning demographic data and smoking behavior. The purpose of this study was to investigate the central auditory processing of children who had sustained chronic middle ear problems during their early language-learning years. A 60% compressed recording of the NU-6 speech discrimination word lists was administered to twenty eight and nine year old normal hearing public school children, reported by their parents to have had repeated middle ear problems during their early years, and to twenty control subjects matched for age from the same public school classes. The effects of two oral prophylaxis methods on the oral hygiene performance of children (N=l00) between the ages of 8 and 13 years were studied over a three month period. Subjects were randomly selected from a dental hygiene clinic patient population and assigned to one of two prophylaxis groups. Each child's oral hygiene was evaluated using the Patient Hygiene Performance Index prior to and at one month intervals following treatment. Multifactor analysis of variance revealed no significant difference between children's age and the type of prophylaxis received. A number of' a-(N)-heterocyclic thiosemicarbazones have been synthesized and evaluated for potential antineoplastic activity since Brockman and colleagues2 reported the antineoplastic activity of' 2-f'ormylpyridine thiosemicarbazone (1). The primary objective of' this research project has been the synthesis and characterization of' the semicarbazone and the thiosemicarbazone derivatives of' the di-2-pyridyl ketone, (9-a) and (9-b), and the 1,8-diazaf'luorenone, (10-a) and (10-b), ring systems, as well as the evaluation of' these compounds for both in vitro and in vivo antineoplastic activity against Ehrlich ascites tumor cells in mice. Methodologies for the improved recovery of selected pathogenic bacteria from estuarine sediments were investigated. Laboratory and field studies were conducted to document the sensitivity of the techniques for isolating Salmonella species, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Vibrio parahaemolyticus-like organisms were enriched in a seawater yeast extract broth and isolated from Thiosulfate Citrate Bile Salts Sucrose plated media. Enrichment procedures with and without elevated temperatures and subsequent transfers to selective and differential plated media have been examined for the isolation of Salmonella species and P. aeruginosa.
