Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between a baccalaureate nursing student's academic performance and scores received on the National Licensing Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN); and to develop an equation to predict NCLEX-RN scores.
The sample consisted of 25 generic students who graduated in 1982 and 1983 from a small private baccalaureate liberal arts college located in the Midwest. An Ex Post Facto research design, using twenty independent variables that relate to academic performance (ACT, CPA, and NLN scores), and one dependent variable (NCLEX-RN), was utilized. Statistical analysis using Pearson's - r and Multiple Regression Analysis …

Observations On Relationships Between Limb Measurements And Mode Of Locomotion In Malaysian Turtles, Duayne Nyckel Jan 1984

Observations On Relationships Between Limb Measurements And Mode Of Locomotion In Malaysian Turtles, Duayne Nyckel

Masters Theses

Twelve Genera (spanning three Families) of Malaysian Turtles were studied to determine whether bone lengths could be correlated to mode of locomotion. Ulna, humerus, tibia, femur, coracoid (among others) were measured and results were presented graphically. Five of the genera were observed singly in a large aquarium. Data were recorded on the amount of time each spent in different locomotor modes. Both limb length data and aquarium observations suggest that turtles can be grouped into three main locomotor habits (i.e. terrestrial walking, bottomwalking, and swimming). The terrestrial group includes the genera, Geochelone, Kinixys, and Gopherus. Bottomwalkers include …

Survey Of Language Acquisition Techniques Provided By Parents Of Talented And Gifted Children, Sharon Engen Jan 1984

Survey Of Language Acquisition Techniques Provided By Parents Of Talented And Gifted Children, Sharon Engen

Dissertations and Theses

Most of the studies on language acquisition techniques provided by parents have been addressed to the training of parents for prevention of language disabilities and disorders (Latzke, 1975). Few investigations have involved language acquisition of the superior functioning child (Patterson, 1981). Hence, the purpose of this study was to survey language acquisition techniques provided by parents of talented and gifted children (TAG) who were enrolled in the Beaverton School District Number 48 TAG program. The first question dealt with what materials and/or equipment did the parents use in aiding their child's language development. The second question dealt with which particular …

Normative Data For The Tennessee Test Of Rhythm And Intonation Patterns (T-Trip), Ray Drommond Jan 1984

Normative Data For The Tennessee Test Of Rhythm And Intonation Patterns (T-Trip), Ray Drommond

Dissertations and Theses

Prosody is the flow of speech created by controlling elements such as pitch, rate, loudness, and stress (Tiffany and Carrell, 1977). Prosody is vital to intelligibility of speech and also communicates meaning. Despite the importance of prosody, however, few tests for the adequacy of prosodic ability in young children have been published (Koike and Asp, 1981a). To remedy this paucity of tools, Koike and Asp published the Tennessee Test of Rhythm and Intonation Patterns (T-TRIP). The clinical usefulness of the T-TRIP has been limited by a lack of normative data against which to compare individual children's performance.

The purpose of …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in health locus of control among female participants in self-directed fitness programs and in group-directed fitness programs. It was hypothesized that subjects involved in self-directed fitness programs would have a more internal health locus of control orientation than subjects involved in group-directed fitness programs. In addition, it was hypothesized that subjects involved in group-directed fitness programs would have a more external health locus of control orientation than subjects involved in self-directed fitness programs. Seventy-seven females between the ages of 25 and 50 were selected for participation in this study. An …

A Comparison Of Oxygen Consumption In Light And Heavy Resistance Weight Training Methods In Males, Kean Gerard Richard Jan 1984

A Comparison Of Oxygen Consumption In Light And Heavy Resistance Weight Training Methods In Males, Kean Gerard Richard

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Heavy resistance and low resistance weight training methods are commonly used in off season conditioning programs for various sports. Research has indicated that heavy resistance training elicits muscular strength development whereas low resistance training elicits the development of muscular endurance. However, there is very little or no research which has investigated a comparison of oxygen consumption between heavy resistance and low resistance training while keeping work constant.

The purpose of this investigation was to compare the oxygen cost of performing heavy and low resistance weight training methods. Also, a second purpose of the study was to determine the contribution of …

The Effect Of Social Support On The Blood Pressure Of Mild And Moderate Hypertensives, Edith Price Vaughan Jan 1984

The Effect Of Social Support On The Blood Pressure Of Mild And Moderate Hypertensives, Edith Price Vaughan

Theses and Dissertations

The study was conducted to determine the relationship between social support and the blood pressure of mild and moderate hypertensives. Motivation for the study was derived from the growing realization that the social support of an individual has a far-reaching effect on illness and health and that little research has been done concerning the specific effect that social support has on blood pressure.

The Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire (NSSQ) was administered to a convenience sample of 30 subjects selected from among the hypertensive clients of the Family Practice Clinic and General Medical Clinic located in the Peninsula Health Center. The …

The Effects Of Prospective Payment Using Diagnosis Related Groups (Drg) On The Relationship Between Hospitals And Physicians, Thomas K. Vogler

Theses

This study examined the attitudes of physicians and hospital administrations towards the prospective payment system based upon Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs). The study investigated changes in relationships, prior to implementation on a wide-spread basis, between the physicians and hospital administrators.

It was anticipated that the relationship between the physicians and hospital administration would change and that the physicians' attitude towards patient management would be altered. An attempt was made to determine the most appropriate area to monitor the consumption of resources during a patient stay. A survey of the physicians and hospital administration was used to determine present attitudes.

The …

Examiner Bias And Intelligence Test Scoring : A Study Of The Effect Of Speech-Handicapped Responses On The Scoring Of The Wisc-R Comprehension Subtest, Julia B. Peyser

Dissertations

Problem

One of the concerns in education today is bias in intelligence tests. Examiner bias and the expectancy effect is largely ignored. An unexplored variable in the research is an examinee's speech handicap and the effect it may produce in the scoring of an intelligence test.

Method

Identical responses to the Comprehension subtest of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised were audiotaped on separate cassettes by two children, one with and one with no speech handicap. Sixty-four examiners, thirty-two practicing psychologists and thirty-two graduate students of psychology, were randomly assigned to score the responses on one of the tapes. Sixteen …

Performance Of Aphasic Listeners On An Expanded Rtt Subtest Presented Verbally And Non-Verbally, Ann Elizabeth Folkestad Jan 1984

Performance Of Aphasic Listeners On An Expanded Rtt Subtest Presented Verbally And Non-Verbally, Ann Elizabeth Folkestad

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A controversy exists in the literature concerning the nature of aphasia. Some authorities believe that aphasia involves a loss of the linguistic elements of language. Other investigators maintain that aphasia is a performance deficit founded in a reduced ability to use essentially-preserved linguistic competence. This study addressed aspects of the above controversy. Asked specifically was the question of whether the mechanism underlying aphasia involves a neurolinguistic loss and thus, is specific to language, or alternately, involves a non-language specific interference with the accessing of retained capacity. This investigation examined the following issues: whether there are one or several patterns of …

Studies Of The Depolarization-Induced Release Of Beta Adrenergic Receptor Blocking Drugs From In Vitro Neural Preparations, Patricia Sherwood Bright Jan 1984

Studies Of The Depolarization-Induced Release Of Beta Adrenergic Receptor Blocking Drugs From In Vitro Neural Preparations, Patricia Sherwood Bright

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to evaluate the hypothesis that nerve terminals may serve as a site for storage and release of beta adrenergic receptor blocking drugs. Experiments were conducted with two different in vitro neural preparations, cultured superior cervical ganglia from adult rats and synaptosomes prepared from rat cerebral cortex. The release of propranolol by depolarizing stimuli was examined and compared with the release of the more hydrophilic, cardioselective beta receptor antagonist atenolol. In both neuronal models, norepinephrine release was monitored as an index of exocytosis. Cultured superior cervical ganglia of the rat represent an in vitro model …

Clinical And Financial Evaluation Of Patients Within A Diagnosis Related Group, Osama M. Ibrahim

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to evaluate financial and clinical data of patients within a selected DRG. The data obtained from such analysis will be used to design a system whereby clinical pharmacists may improve the hospital's reimbursement potential.

Based upon Upton's proposed plan, this study is designed to evaluate all DRGs in a community hospital in an attempt to focus on those DRGs which represent the greatest financial pressure to the pharmacy department and, therefore, to the institution.

Clinical and financial data of patients within the expensive DRG, will be collected from their medical and financial records for …

Release Of Cortisol From Lanolin Alcohol-Providone Films, Mahmud Sighayer Treki Jan 1984

Release Of Cortisol From Lanolin Alcohol-Providone Films, Mahmud Sighayer Treki

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In this study, lanolin alcohol as well as lanolin alcohol-povidone films (1:1 . 5) were investigated as a potential drug delivery system. The in vitro drug release from these films was studied in terms of the effect of agitation, film thickness and drug concentration. The rate of release of Cortisol from lanolin alcohol films was not affected by the intensity of agitation. Moreover, the film matrix was found to remain essentially intact throughout the release process. Further analysis of the data revealed that Higuchi's diffusion-controlled granular matrix model explained the mechanism of Cortisol release from such films. The results of …
