Serving Primary Caregivers Of Persons With Alzheimer's Disease : An Integrated Service Delivery Model, Greta Krahn Stapleton Jan 1986

Serving Primary Caregivers Of Persons With Alzheimer's Disease : An Integrated Service Delivery Model, Greta Krahn Stapleton

Dissertations and Theses

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of nontreatable dementia, a syndrome which reflects a progressive and global impairment of memory, intellect, and other cognitive abilities. This devastating condition directly touches the lives of as many as 10 million Americans, including not only persons suffering from the disease but their primary caregivers and other family members as well. At present the course of AD cannot be halted or reversed, and no cure is known. The problem, then, is how to most effectively respond to the psychosocial needs of primary caregivers in order to help them provide the best possible …

Parsing Routines In Syntactic Processing: The Effect Of Expected Word Order On Sentence Comprehension, Ann Dibella Jablon Jan 1986

Parsing Routines In Syntactic Processing: The Effect Of Expected Word Order On Sentence Comprehension, Ann Dibella Jablon

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Two experiments were conducted to test the SVO Expectancy Hypothesis. This hypothesis embodies three claims: (a) the syntactic parsing device has an initial expectation for the SVO (syntactically defined) structure, (b) the parser reads or tracks the syntactic information in the utterance to confirm or adjust its predictions, and (c) the parser has the ability to make on-line revisions based on the syntactic information contained within the utterance.

In the first experiments using tachistoscopic presentation, 75 sentences representing 15 different sentence types were read by subjects. Each type varied in structure and in the clarity of markers, used to indicate …

Synthesis Of Polyhydroxybenzene Derivatives For Evaluation As Antitumor Agents, Douglas L. Brown Jan 1986

Synthesis Of Polyhydroxybenzene Derivatives For Evaluation As Antitumor Agents, Douglas L. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

In order to prepare more effective inhibitors of ribonucleotide reductase a series of 4-substituted and 4,5-disubstituted catechols were synthesized and tested. The derivatives synthesized were also examined for their antitumor activity against L1210 leukemia in mice. A free radical scavenging assay was performed to establish what electronic parameters may govern in vitro and/or in vivo activity. The molecular features of the most potent compounds were compared to the features of the natural substrate of reduction, CDP, UDP, GDP and ADP.

The results obtained from the free radical assay did not show any correlation to the results observed either in vitro …

Phonetic Ambiguity Perception In Reading Disabled And Non-Disabled Children And Adolescents, Elizabeth A. Carter Jan 1986

Phonetic Ambiguity Perception In Reading Disabled And Non-Disabled Children And Adolescents, Elizabeth A. Carter

Theses and Dissertations

There are speculations that disabled readers may fail to correctly decode written words because they are insensitive to language's phonetic form. This insensitivity is presumed by some to be due to a speech perceptual deficit. The purpose of the current study was to assess differences between disabled and non-disabled adolescents and elementary school students in their perceptual accuracy in decoding phonetically ambiguous speech. The effects of two processing factors derived from previous research, priming and word form (e.g., Spencer & Carter, 1982), were also examined to assess how perceptual processes may differ between groups. Clinical evidence of some verbal problems …

Health Perception, Anginal Symptoms And Life Satisfaction After Coronary Artery Bypass And Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty, Diana Creger Porter Jan 1986

Health Perception, Anginal Symptoms And Life Satisfaction After Coronary Artery Bypass And Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty, Diana Creger Porter

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to gather data about the perceived health, anginal symptoms and life satisfaction in CABG and PTCA patients. The study explored the interrelationships among the variables and the differences between the two groups. The problem statement was:

1. How do patients perceive their own past, present and future health, level of anginal symptoms and life satisfaction after CABG and PTCA?

2. What are the interrelationships among perceived health, anginal symptoms and life satisfaction in CABG and PTCA patients.

The conceptual framework for this study was based on the social theory of symbolic interactionism …

Illness Behaviour Questionnaire As A Predictor Of Problematic And Aproblematic Patients With A Painful Upper Extremity, Suzanne S. Seay Jan 1986

Illness Behaviour Questionnaire As A Predictor Of Problematic And Aproblematic Patients With A Painful Upper Extremity, Suzanne S. Seay

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to measure the illness behavior of acute and chronic upper extremity pain patients using the Illness Behaviour Questionnaire (IBQ), to determine' the rehabilitation outcome by pre-set criteria, and to determine the effectiveness of the seven scales of the IBQ in predicting the problem pain patient. Each subject completed a self-administered test packet which included the IBQ. Each was identified by the investigator as a problematic or as a problematic patient using information in the medical chart. Patients entering the study with acute pain (n=12) had less pain upon discharge and returned more quickly to …

The Incidence Of Auscultatory Gaps In Hospitalized Adults, Elizabeth Tayloe Courts Jan 1986

The Incidence Of Auscultatory Gaps In Hospitalized Adults, Elizabeth Tayloe Courts

Theses and Dissertations

The study was undertaken to determine the incidence of auscultatory gaps in hospitalized adults and to determine whether a relationship existed between the presence of a gap and the patient's age, sex, race, or medical diagnosis. Blood pressures were taken bilaterally on 120 randomly selected hospitalized adults using the technique recommended by the American Heart Association. None of the subjects in the sample had an auscultatory gap present.

Vocal Stress Patterns And Stuttering: A Study Of Predictive Value, Julie Anne Christy Jan 1986

Vocal Stress Patterns And Stuttering: A Study Of Predictive Value, Julie Anne Christy

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The relationship between stuttering and linguistic stress was observed within four adult stutterers. A specially designed test passage was read by each of the subjects five successive times. The passage contained 18 test syllables, nine were stressed and nine were non-stressed as indicated by dictionary diacritical markings. Six measurements of acoustic indicators of stress, including fundamental frequency, intensity, and duration, were obtained for each subject for the fluent adapted productions of the test syllables and the immediately preceding syllables. Correlated t-tests were computed to determine if significant differences existed between stressed and non-stressed phonetically matched syllables for each of the …

A Comparative Analysis Of Three Maximal Exercise Protocols, Scott Mittelstadt Jan 1986

A Comparative Analysis Of Three Maximal Exercise Protocols, Scott Mittelstadt

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max) is an important measurement in physical education. It is the best single measurement for assessing an individual's aerobic capacity and physical fitness. The best protocol for eliciting VO2 max is a maximal exercise protocol conducted on the bike, bench or treadmill. The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in VO2 max elicited by three treadmill protocols in untrained college age females. Each subject completed three maximal tests. Maximal oxygen consumption, maximal heart rate (HR), maximal ventilation (VE) and maximal respiratory exchange ratio (R) were determined with the Bruce, Balke and Moody Protocols. …

The Effects Of Cigarette Smoking And Vitamin E On The Morphology Of Mice Testes, Kathleen Grams Hall Dec 1985

The Effects Of Cigarette Smoking And Vitamin E On The Morphology Of Mice Testes, Kathleen Grams Hall

Masters Theses

Epidemiological studies have produced evidence to support an association between cigarette smoking and abnormal sperm morphology. At the least , an effect on sperm morphology indicates the involvement of the testis. Therefore, the research was designed to survey the potential of cigarette smoking for inducing histopathology in the testes of mice, and if there was damage, would vitamin E overcome it.

In the present study the testes of C57BL/6 mive exposed to cigarette smoke and/or vitamin E and 22 control mice were histologically processed. Sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin were assessed for total histopathology and revealed statistically significant differences …

A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Three Behavioral Treatments On Intermittent And Terminal Insomnia, Ellen Chatham Tripp Dec 1985

A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Three Behavioral Treatments On Intermittent And Terminal Insomnia, Ellen Chatham Tripp

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of stimulus control, paradoxical intention, and progressive relaxation on intermittent and terminal insomnia. Their effect on sleep onset latency was also analyzed. Each treatment was given alone initially. Subsequently progressive relaxation was added to stimulus control and paradoxical intention.

Each of the eleven subjects served as his or her control by the use of baseline data taken at the beginning of the study. Data consisted of self-report sleep questionnaires which the subjects mailed in daily. Stimulus control was the most effective treatment on intermittent insomnia and sleep onset latency. No …

The sample consisted of 60 male volunteers from two Veterans Administration Medical Centers (VAMC) alcohol treatment programs. Thirty volunteers from the Danville, Illinois, VAMC served as the RET treatment group and 30 volunteers from the Marion, …

The Effects Of A Contingency Contract On Bulimic Behavior, Tim Lee Vander Molen Dec 1985

The Effects Of A Contingency Contract On Bulimic Behavior, Tim Lee Vander Molen

Masters Theses

In dealing with a 22 year old university student suffering from bulimia, two factors of the subject's behavior must be corrected. First, the subject must regain control over eating. This was done by having the subject regulate the type and amount of.food consumed and the time of day in which food was consumed. Second, the subject must correct the misconceptions about body weight, body image, and means of weight control. This was done by having the subject read and discuss relevant literature which force the subject to reevaluate the concepts of body weight and weight control. To clarify the treatment, …
